By NICK GIONGCO
RICHARD SCHAEFER, the man who runs the day-to-day operations of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), one of the world’s chief boxing companies, is not discounting the possibility of a victory by Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera over Manny Pacquiao on Oct. 6 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Schaefer, who holds the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Oscar De La Hoya-owned firm based in Los Angeles, warned the Filipino southpaw of what an 18-year veteran like Barrera could do.
"I believe that Barrera has a very good chance and I’ll tell you why," Schaefer told boxingtalk.net yesterday. "Everytime people have counted out Barrera, he has performed at his best."
Schaefer noted Barrera’s performance in the third fight with Erik Morales a few years back and the one against Prince Naseem Hamed in April 2001.
"Barrera’s career has been built on challenges and Barrera lives for these fights and these kind of big challenges. I think we will see Marco Antonio Barrera yet again turning back the clock to make everyone a believer," said Schaefer.
While it’s been announced two weeks ago that Pacquiao-Barrera 2 is finally on, Schaefer and Top Rank head Bob Arum are scheduled to meet anytime during the week to finalize the entire card.
Top Rank promotes Pacquiao while Barrera fights under the GBP banner and only the intervention of Daniel Weinstein, a retired San Francisco judge, made it possible for the two warring companies to join hands in staging one of the year’s most anticipated matches.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, is busy shooting a film that will be shown at the film festival during the Christmas holidays and is tentatively scheduled to depart for Los Angeles to resume his training on July 19.
Barrera, currently vacationing in Acapulco, is also setting the stage for his preparation as he plans to work out near his residence in Guadalajara before moving either to Big Bear, California, or Mexico City.

That's just a HYPING JOB to make the fight bigger. MAB's only chance is for him to K.O. or T.K.O. Pacquaio in the first 5 rounds if he fails? He won't last the heat that Pac will be bringing.

MAB can outbox Pac over 12. Don't think it will happen but I'm rooting for him.

because barrera has had his back against the wall time and time again and has come out with the victory to shock us all. so lets not count him out yet.

I agree that MABs chances are very slim I mean its almost as if he has Zero chance to win it, BUT!! he did do well against Marquez much better I think than anybody expected, you can make a case for Barrera to win that fight, though I thought JMM did a great job and more damage with his shots.
However, Pacquiao didnt look great to me against Solis who is not on MABs level, if Barrera can make Manny miss the way he was missing against Solis I think he can pull it out, to be honest with you, I can see a Barrera win here, if Manny takes him to light, if Manny fights the way he did the last time out no question Barrera has a chance and he has an even bigger chance if he can hire the guy that poisned Wlad when he fought Brewster.

"if" Barrera is planning to retire this year, he wants to have the biggest fight and paycheck out there - Pacquiao-Barrera II.
Good Luck Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao!

Sure thats true and I agree with that he wants a big money fight, but I also think Barrera is the kind of fighter that wants to go out on a high note.
Barrera could have easily retired after he beat Naz but didnt he stuck around to give us three fights with Morales a good fight with Marquez the loss to Pacquiao I will be honest I didnt think Barrera would beat him but I didnt think Manny would beat him the way he did.
Lets not forget MAB had plenty of distractions going into that fight, the media went crazy after learning about his brain surgery, not only that but he did have to leave camp three weeks early due to fires up in Big bear.
This time around will be different MAB will be well prepaired win or lose it wont be the same kind of beat down it was the first time out.

Against Juarez he brawled with him on the inside on the 1st fight. I predicted MAB could have easily beat Juarez if he just boxed him...and he did. Against Erik their fights was always very close...the 3rd was closer than people would like to think too...just more decisive. Against Pacman, MAB was totally outclassed...he was outjabbed, overpowered, outsped, outworked and only a miracle could turn that around.
As for MAB doing well against JMM...dont make a difference. Infact I predicted him to beat JMM but judges didnt see it that way. I think Pac would destroy JMM at this point too, when Pac fought JMM he literally threw 1-2 combination...his pure speed, workrate & power is what saved him in that fight.
Pac TKO inside 7...depending on how long Pac wants to play around with MAB for. If he goes top gear from the start going for a KO...I see it finishing inside 5.
As for Pac not doing well against Solis...he tried to box with Solis for 1st 6 rounds and seing as how Solis had the reach advantage...it didnt work out too well. It only took Pac 2 rounds to finish Solis once he turned it into a fight.

I'm not counting out MAB friend . . . I know this is not an easy fight for Pacquiao . . . but we can't deny that MAB is no longer the same MAB who destroyed Hamed while Pac is just peaking up at this point.
Don't consider Pac's performance against Solis as a refference because that's not the real Pacman. That fight was intentionally being dragged by Pac to last longer by fighting stupidly . . . articles that came out after the fight should prove that. :yep

I'll be hoping Barrera shocks us all once again, but I think this is the final chapter to his great career - and I don't expect it to be a happy ending.

Don't know why it would go any different this go around? Pacman -vs- JMM would have been a more appealing match IMO.

What if MAB brings his Juarez 2 playbook?
What if MAB brings his Juarez 2 playbook?
Which is quite expected but Pac is a lot faster than Juarez.

What if MAB brings his Juarez 2 playbook?
He wont win against Manny Pacquiao with that play book, Manny comes forward at your ass with speed and thunder, Barrera is going to have to dig down and fight the man back.
But he must do it in spots, the key is to slow the fight down the way that he did with Marquez in spots if he can do that he will have opportunities to pull it out

I have a hard time seeing how this fight will be competitive. I'll buy it, but I want Pac/JMM II.
why is this fight even happening. at this point barrera should just lay down on the canvass and let the ref count 10.

the only way mab can win is that if pac lets him win to set up a third fight for double the money...
I will be rooting for Barrera to make this one competitive. But like most others, I think Pacquiao will beat him again.

What if MAB brings his Juarez 2 playbook?
Well That won't work against Pacquiao. Pac is not as passive and tentative like Juarez. The guy is like a shark . . . he goes in for a quick kill everytime he smells blood.
But if Barrera makes it hard for Pac by counter punching ala JMM . . . he might survive but won't win the decission.

I agree no one should coutn Barera out...especially since PAC has been inactive and had a lot of outside distractions....BUT...with all of that said...PAC is still the best "FIGHTER" P4P (tied with Floyd) out there and his natrual ability ie Reflexes, speed, power and relentless style of fighting is ALOT for an OLD MAB to take on.
I see PAC KOing MAB, but I wouldn't be surprised if MAB somehow proved the world wrong again and that Marco still has fight left in him. After all...I think he edged JMM in their most recent fight. It could have gone either way but I though MAB won by a round. He's still a TOP DAWG...the question is, can he beat the BEST?

If pac comes in 100%... he beats mab for the same reason he beat morales.... he is in his prime & these guys are a little worse for wear at this stage.
Taking nothing away from pac but his biggest wins were vs a declining morales who actually beat pac before his decline got really bad.
:good

I agree that PAC beat "Past their Prime" EM and MAB, but with that said...Both EM and MAB were still the division best or damn close to it. MAB just (IMO) beat JMM by a hair and EM gave MAB a pretty decent showing in their rubber match.

when did shaeffer become a boxing expert? i must have missed a lot in the esb board that suddenly he became an expert in boxing. His opinion is shared by many including marco's mother, father, sister, brothers and trainers.
