View Full Version : The hardest punch landed that a fighter just shook off

(1) Arguello straight right to Pryor in round 13. That punch would
of knocked out any fighter in the 140 pound division

(2) Lewis uppercut on Vitali

(3) Mugabi uppercut on Hagler

Some of the ones Chris Finnegan was taking off Bob Foster. Too many to mention off hand, but some in the later rounds were bone breaking - literally. The same punches cracked Vicente Rondon's skull and sparked Dick Tiger and Mike Quarry. Finnegan was tough.

How about Foreman's left hook against Chuvalo.

Chuvalo almost comes off his feet, rocks back into the ropes, then merely hides behind his own shoulder in futile effort to defend against the rest of the onslaught...

Like the Hagler versus Mugabi call. Crystal clean uppercut...

How about Fraziers left hook bombs in the 6th (?) of the Thrilla. Ed Schuyler quote from Hausers book

'...Frazier hit Ali with a left hook thats the hardest punch Ive ever seen. Alis head turned like it was on a swivel, and his response was to look at Frazier and say I thought Joe Frazier was washed up.'

Magical stuff.

Danny Williams vs. Mike Tyson. Not one shot in particular, but lots of powerful blows.

Mercer vs. Lewis' right hands.

Tua vs. Ibeabuchi. Both guys shook off monster shots.

(1) Arguello straight right to Pryor in round 13. That punch would
of knocked out any fighter in the 140 pound divisionYou almost ended this thread before it got started!

In their rematch, Arguello also caught Vilomar Fernandez coming in with a similar flush right hand that didn't faze Vilomar. (At least Alexis was able to drop Fernandez once in their second bout though.)

Jerry Quarry claimed immediately after his blowout of Shavers that Earnie never hit him, but Shavers has stated on camera that he did nail Jerry solidly with his right.

Much of Foreman's reputation for a solid chin during his second career is based on walking through Cooney's best left hook.

The turning point in Joe Louis/Max Baer was when Joe took Maxie's best right, and immediately started pounding Baer backwards during an exchange of fire, which had Louis in retreat until that instant.

To the best of my knowledge, both Vito Antuofermo and Marvin Hagler have stated that Cyclone Hart's hook was the hardest punch they'd ever been hit by, yet both walked through it.

There is an award winning photograph of Ray Robinson distorting Kid Gavilan's face with the same sort of left hook he kayoed Gene Fullmer with. Robby got eveything into it, but the Keed continued on.

The famous shot of Rocky Marciano's face distorting mid-ring right on Jersey Joe Walcott was NOT of the knockout punch (which came later in their match). Walcott saw this earlier punch coming (and is looking right at it in the snapshot), and went through it. (I'd need to scrutinize the complete footage of Marciano/Walcott I to locate the synchronization of lightbulb flash and boxing action which would pinpoint exactly when that picture was actually taken.)

very true becuase maricano is facing another direction he has full extension of the punch in the pic we are talking of but the knock out punch was actually a hook and marciano was facing another directionIn Skehan's biography of Marciano (at least I think that's where I read it-the book was borrowed), the punch which won the title for Rocky was described as "a tremendous short right," rather than a Suzy Q, a clairification borne out by the movie clip. That superb post you've produced revealing the differences exposes the classic mid-ring shot as the "Flag Raising on Iwo Jima" of boxing images. Perhaps the best single image in boxing history, but not the big moment during the event itself. (The true first flag raising on Iwo was a rather mundane photographic image, but that was also the triggering gesture which actually inflamed the Japanese on the island into a fury at the time.)

The big question is, when was that mid-ring punch snapped, and for that, we'd probably need access to the complete footage of the bout to scour. (I haven't viewed it in ages.) Significantly, there is no camera flash at the instant Marciano's kayo punch makes contact, only in the moment after, as he's following through on the footage.

Hard to say 1 in particular but if you watch morales v mab 1, last 5-10 secs of rd 7..... mab throws a flurry of about 6 punches of which 1 left hook lands cleanly on morales jaw, for a sec it looks as if em is gona sink to his left then he bounces up & lets about 5 or 6 punches go with a pissed off look on his face, great stuff.

Ps. jc chavez took some real digs to the jaw & didnt blink for most of his career, hard to find a tougher fighter anywhere in boxing`s long history imo.

My vote goes to Muhammad Ali against Shavers - round 2. Oh that punch definitely hurt him - but he did shake it off quickly and make it look much lesser than it was. See it on youtube - this one takes the cake. I recall Foreman landing one of his killer uppercuts against Ali in Ziaire but no one noticed because again, Ali made it look normal.

Additionally, Holyfield vs Tyson in round 1 (first fight) and round 3 (second fight moments before the infamous incident). A lot of people choose to ignore this or don't see it as clearly. Just look at the punch that Tyson lands in the first 3 seconds of the opening! That was a KO punch had it been against a fighter with a normal chin. Holyfield was rocked on several occasions but his expressions didn't show it. To stop an ATG like Holyfield (just see Ali-Frazier III) you'll need a million punches. Tyson landed enough punches in that fight to have KO'd 12 different fighters IMO.

I read an inteview with Holyfield back around '98, where he talked about the start of the fight. He'd seen so much videotape of Tyson, and felt utterly certain that Tyson would start the fight with a lunging left hook. Time and time and time again, in Tyson's previous fights he would tend to go with a left hook to close the distance, rather than his right.

Holyfield went all through training camp working with this, pre-visuallizing it so much in his head. He was 100% certain. "I could see the whole thing in my head...Tyson comes out, throws the left, I dodge it and counter, Mike goes down, I win. Simple as that." Over and over, slip the left hook, counter. Slip the left hook, counter. Holyfield was certain.

Fight starts, Tyson comes out, throws a right hand, knocks Holyfield off-balance. Holyfield said he just kinda smiled ruefully to himself, and figured that was just one of those rare lunging rights!

Which was correct too, because for the rest of the fight it's just left-left-left from Mike when he's not close-up and Holyfield repeatedly counters them.

Good post. It just goes to show what poor strategy Mike Tyson had despite his considerable talents! I agree, it was the loopy, predictable left hook all the way. When Tyson used the right - it served him well. It was so hard to avoid because it is straight and fast that Holy looked like a statue who wasn't able to react its speed in time. Lands clean and it's gotta hurt. The lunging right is what he's gotta use if he needs ANY chance against guys like Liston, Foreman, Holmes (who'd probably win because of Tyson's poor strategy). You hear about Holy studying videotapes so carefully and making strategy - he is such a smart fighter. What was Mike doing in the meanwhile? Smoking weed. You gotta have more cowbell err strategy.

Yep, that punch gets #2 after Shavers. It's the punches you don't expect that hurt you the most. Holyfield has NEVER been knocked down by a straight right but that was the closest he was to it (and this was the 1st punch so 0 attrition!). It sent him reeling back.

Don't forget Foreman's shock-and-awe shots on Ali in Round 5. Foreman was bad! How he swiveled back and forth to land those killers on a rope-a-doping Ali, who, of course, suddenly pulled his guard apart to show that mocking, wide-eyed, "I'm-still-here", look. You could just see Foreman think, "Man, I just hit him with my baddest! I'm George Foreman! He didn't go down! I'm feeling queasy."

How on Earth did Gavilan take something like this standing up, and just how hard was that double hook Basilio did floor him with for a nine count? Also, what kind of shot did Ike Williams drop Gavilan with? (Basilio's KD of Gavilan is readily available on-line of course, and most of you are already familiar with that footage.) Just look at the tension in Ray's left thigh! (Straight up from the floor!)

Barkley hit Duran with a shot that Made Duran almost do a 360 turn but he stayed up.

The shot had maximum leverage on a perfect swivel. Barkley came up with it and it was short. Keep in mind, Iran was walking around at damn near 200 at this time. It landed flush and you know what? Duran didn't see it.

On the replays you can see Duran's eyes roll like a cartoon and he almost falls -but then relaxes and uses insane skill on the inside to survive. He was completely recovered by the end of the round and went on to get a KD himself later. Best shot and most miraculous recovery that I ever saw. The size difference also forces that conclusion for me.

After the fight, Duran was interviewed about the shot and waves it off, saying "he hit me on the neck" - He sounded like Senya making ludicrous excuses for Roy.

1) The aforementioned Antuofermo-Hart fight. I think it was in the 4th that the Cyclone landed a full-blooded left hook on Vito - nothing happened - and then Hart repeats the left hook. Think it sliced Vito's right eye but nothing happened. It was then that Vito turned it on.

2) Can't remember the round but it was in the 3rd Leonard-Duran fight. Duran's back is to the ropes and Ray unloads one of the hardest, cleanest right hands flush on the jaw that I have seen. It almost took Duran's feet out from him with the force, but nothing happened. Amazing.

3) The 2nd Basilio-Demarco fight. Possibly the 7th round Tony unloads his fabled left hook. Carmen does a dance, a stagger and regroups while Tony is on him. Wild stuff.

The left hook to the liver is the most painful blow in the game and ill never forget Evander Holyfield taking as hard a shot from freekin Lennox Lewis as ive ever seen and shaking it off.

He was in extreme agony but he did it.

The big right hand that decked Carlos Monzon in the 2nd round of his rematch with Rodrigo Valdez. He bounced right up at 1 and never reacted that he was really cracked.
