I'm really looking forward to Paul Williams' fight against Antonio Margarito. A lot of people say he is untested, but Williams has trained/sparred with a lot of top guys. He even sparred with Margarito about three years ago and word is Margarito's camp asked him to leave after a week and a half because Williams was supposedly working him over. I know you can't always pick a fight based on sparring. Who knows if Tony was working on something else and wasn't going all out. I think his lanky frame and southpaw style make him very hard to deal with. Do you guys think he can be the top guy at 147 pounds. Also, I came across a story that had a lot of background on Williams. It also had a Margarito training camp video. Thought you guys might want to check it out.

if he hasnt worked on his defense he has no chance in this fight, from what I have seen out of Paul he dont fight so smart all the time, he uses the ropes and pulls straight back that will line him up to get cracked by a guy like Margarito, dont blink in this fight seriously.

I just addressed this in another thread. If he wins impressively, he'll be on the radar and in the elite mix at welter. He will NOT be the top guy simply for beating Margarito, I don't care how impressive the victory.

No way, he is young and high, in one or 2 years he will be struggling with weight and move up to 160.

I thought you werent passionate win it comes to AM???
Anyone who roots against a blue collar, hard working warrior like Margarito. . .a guy who has clearly earned his shot at the top but has been avoided for years. . . is a scumbag. . . .IB, yer back on the scumbag list. :good

We will find out more about him tomorrow - if he wipes the floor with Margarito (as in 12-0, 11-1, 10-2) or KOs him in impressive fashion, he could very well be the next big thing in the division, but he may end up being the Kingsley Ikeke of 147. 1 more day and we will have a clearer picture!

:lol::lol:
I'm passionately sick of hearing his name thrown around in the p4p mix as some kind of avoided world-beater when nothing I've seen of him indicates any such thing.

Because for whatever reason he never became a household name (probably due to the lack of a really splashy signature win), ergo the general public never clamored to see him in big fights, ergo he's a low-money dance partner...unattractive to most big names.

so lets get this straight . . . . yer sick of hearing about a hard working fighter who cant get the shot he obviously deserves. . . but you dont seem to mind t #1 p4p boxer choosing the path of least resistance for the last 3 - 4 years? :blood

With good reason Zak.
Anyone with half a brain can take a long hard look at Paul Williams' record and note that his opponents have an average 50% win ratio. Sure he has had a couple up and comers here or there, but it is also true that none of them have gone anywhere since.
Kermit Cintron was at this point in 2005, on the verge of the April showdown with Margarito, with far more power and steam coming in. Margarito stopped him in 5 easy, one-sided rounds.
My gut tells me that Williams will try and box, but Margarito is too much for Williams to try to just avoid getting into exchanges. While it is true that Williams has a comfortable size advantage, it is also true that his feet have to be planted to do anything of significance. Another truth is the one punch this welter giant is open to consistently happens to be the overhand right, Margarito's prime knockout punch.
PacDBeast called it earlier yesterday I believe, and I'm gonna agree with him on that. The overhand right will end it, and it'll be a punch Williams won't even see.

First off, what the hell is so bad about Ikeke? he lost his title fight against AA so did Miranda so whats your point? I know Kingsley and he is good people down to earth I have learned so much from him at Wildcard, class act!
So again why are you bashing on him? becuase he fell short? Ikeke would smash your ass easily in less than one round and you have the balls to talk shit, he has accomplished more in this sport than you could ever in three life times.

making Cintron cry was a pretty good splash - enough of one to scare away Zab, Baldomir and FMJ.
Dont give me the money excuse. . . cause he was willing to take short money to make the FMJ fight. FMJ left money one the table to avoid it, dont gimme that BS.

Not for beating Margarito, which I doubt he'll do. Not because I love Margarito (I think he'll get beat once he steps up and he WOULD have been if Clotty's hand hadn't broke) but because he doesn't look very good to me. I think he plays right to Margarito's strengths (wide open defense) and doesn't take advantage of his weakenesses (using sharp, accurate counters). I think Margarito will knock him out and we'll be in for many many more months of totally fucking obnoxious Margarito nuthugging.

Hey, I don't expect boxing politics to be fair. If I did, I wouldn't be much of an attentive fan of the sport. :yep

I wasn't "bashing" Kingsley Ikeke - you took it that way and got extremely defensive. I have read interviews and he does seem like a classy guy. But I was speaking about Paul Williams and his potential as a fighter. I was basically saying we will have a better picture after tomorrow if he will be the next Tommy Hearns (huge for his division and an all time great) or Kingsley Ikeke (huge for his division that isn't an all time great, but a solid fighter). Is Kingsley a bum or an average fighter? No way in hell - he was able to get a world title shot against Arthur Abraham which is more than 99 percent of boxers could say. To add to this, I was a sparring partner of Duane Thomas at Kronk Gym - he was a terrific fighter and a world champion who was taken away too soon. I could be talking about an up and coming prospect and say "will he become the next Jake LaMotta or a Duane Thomas?" By saying that, I wouldn't be talking shit about Thomas just as I wasn't talking shit about Ikeke.

I think williams win just because of the intangibles... 6'2, 82in reach etc. But whoever wins the next potential fight will be one for the ages, a possible fight with cotto, then we will see who really is the man.

I'm looking forward to this fight. I believe Paul Williams will surprise some people. Hes going to batter Margarito all through the fight and KO him mid to late rounds I think. Hes tall and uses his height well. I like his jabs and hand speed, good power too. Only thing is he doesnt have a great footwork, but Margarito cant take advantage of that.
