Good start to the show tonight! Who else is watching?

Oh.. you know I'm watching. I am hoping like hell that we get to see Gray Maynard vs Frank Edgar. Not sure if they are going to show it or not. By the order the show was supposed to go, that fight would already be over... but there is no update on any play by play, and no mention of it. I am hoping that they are pushing it back and showing us that fight.

I'm hoping for that fight, too. Of all the fights on the card, that's probably the fight I want to watch most. I think Edgar has a bright, bright future at 155. And Maynard is 5-0-1, so it could be interesting.

Yeah, and that soft midsection just ate a huge knee. I thought it was stopped a bit early, but I think he was cooked anyway. Big, big win for Thiago.

Yeah, that was absolutely hilarious. Normally I don't like showboating, but when you can back it up, more power to ya. He knew that sucker was sunk in deep...and he sure as hell was right.

This ref is 13 years old.

Yeah, I've been thinking that all night.

And Edgar looks tiny in there tonight. I don't even think Maynard is one of the biggest 155 fighters, but he is dwarfing Frankie. I think Edgar could easily fight at 145, and would probably be pretty dominant. Edgar vs. Faber, anyone?

Tko4
04-02-2008, 09:17 PM
Big, big win by Maynard tonight. I think the size and strength difference played a big role in his ability to get the takedowns, and they won him the fight. He looked very solid against a good, good fighter.

Maynard is a pretty big guy for 155. Not HUGE... but we were both captains of different wrestling teams opposite each other, and I came in contact with him quite a few times. He is extremely solid, and has a lot of mass for a 155 pounder. Just about all the muscle mass that you can stack into a fighter of that weight.

Yeah, I kept thinking during the fight, "I wonder what weight classes they wrestled at in college." I'm guessing Maynard wrestled at least a class higher. I was impressed with him tonight.

I agree with everyone. It was an all around good card. The card with the Leben-Martin fight and Quarry-Drago battle still has a place in my heart as the best though. The quality of fights tonight were better, but damn, those two fights were entertaining as all hell.

Very disappointing. Thought it was stopped early, but have to respect the refs descretion. Hopefully we will see a rematch..

<----- 0 v cash as normal. Thanks Karo!

Never seen a ripped Judoka. I know rope climbing, lots of crunches and calistenics are normal, but diet, weight training? No weight training to maintain flexibility, but you can weight train and stretch to maintain that flexibility. I know Karo probably brags about being stronger in the clinch and on the ground than most people he's tumbled with.. But he'd be an absolute feak if he took part in lifting some.

I was more impressed with Edgar.. Looked 20 lbs smaller and looked more technically sound. He maintained his balance better than Maynard, ate some shots and seems to have a good chin.. As Maynard ages, he will either wilt due to the obvious weight draining, or he will have to move up in weight (where he really belongs).. Edgar is natural at that weight and able to neutralize Maynard for the most part.

Great card, Rogan interviewing the DEA guys was hillariously ironic.

And Edgar wrestled at 141 as late as 2005, so he is pretty small for a LW and Edgar is pretty big for one. That was a good fight; I was surprised but Maynard is underrated in my eyes.

I don't know who Alexander was kidding, but he was out, and it somehow felt great to see Karo stopped.

Alot of people who seemed to be building momentum seemed to lose it tonight.

Oh, and while Florian looked good, his GnP is hillarious.

Yeah, took a vicious knee to the gut from Alves, then dropped like a sack. Alves hit him with a couple very glancing blows, and the ref stopped it. The punches didn't really land, so it was probably stopped a bit early. But I don't think he was going to get his wind back in time anyway.

What does opposite each other mean? A rivalry?

What's meant by contact? Did you wrestle each other or scrimmage/practice together?

I was just expressing the fact that we were not captains of the same team. No, our schools certainly were not rivals, but we were both part of the Ohio Duals. Different divisions. I had known him for a couple years since he moved in from Vegas. We happened to attend the same Wrestling Camp when he first moved in. We were about the same size at the time and partnered together. I never wrestled him in an actual match, as we just never met up at the same tournament in the same weight class, or the same division. We would drill together and warm up every so often before matches though, when we were at States.

I could be. I think it would be funnier if I was a 350 pound bull dike from Seattle, though.

Yes, St. Edwards is an amazing wrestling team. I would have started for them too. I beat their starter in my weight class by Maj. Dec. at an open tournament. I also wrestled the West Virginia state champ at a dual meet, the match was built up to be huge.... and I won by tech fall 10 seconds into the second period. The kid was awful.... cradle bait. His division at States must have been disgusting to watch.

Alan Fried was IMHO the best St. Ed kid I ever saw.....

Just because you were a lot better than someone does not make them awful......No state champ is awful...Ohio has a lot more competition (population or something about being on the wrong side of the Ohio River :yep ) than WV......

I can't say I beat a WV state champ like that, the best I did was a WV runner up...I won 15-5 if my memory serves me correctly.....

anyhow it sounds like you were a very competitive wrestler, and judging by your posts (the ones I have read) you're also a pretty darn good debater (let me add the caveat that being a good debater doesn't mean that one is right, just that they are more persuasive in appearing right)

Awful may have been the wrong word to use. I just didn't like this kid though. He was known to be on steroids (kid on his own team told me), and was cocky as hell. I took him down immediately, and drove him out of bounds, and he started punching the mat. He was yelling and growling... was just an ass hole. He punched the mat every time that we went out of bounds. My coach told me to kick him out, so I could finish the tech in the first round, and I said no, because I didn't want him to score on me (because of his attitude). I chose neutral for the 2nd round, and took him down straight to his back for the last 4 points I needed. (2 takedown and a 2 point near fall)... After the match I told him good match, and he said "whatever"... then I went to go shake his coaches hand, and he went walking off the mat. His coach told him to shake my coaches hand and he said "fuck them"... and stormed off the mat, yanked his shorts and shirt from his coach and disappeared into the back. Guy just rubbed me the wrong way... I normally respect all of my opponents for having the courage to compete.

Sounds like a poor sport...

Maybe the roids made him a jerk:think

but the fact that he took them says something about his persona....

He probably had jerk tendencies that were really accentuated by his roids....:good

Sounds like a very poor show of sportsmanship. Even when guys whooped me good, I always shook their hand or sometimes I would give 'em a hug because of that mutual respect that builds between opponenets during the course of competition. I guess it's good for the karmic balance that you kicked his ass. Heheh.

Widdow,

did you watch any of the 2008 NCAA's (grappling of course)

If so....what did you think of the 149 lb wgt. class

That was about as stacked a wgt class as you could get.....

2 4x state champs from Ohio and they get 7th and 8th...

I'll be curious to see the results if Metcalf and Jenkins wrestle each other in freestyle in the off season....

I agree guys, he was a bad sport. It isn't like I haven't had my ass handed to me a few times in wrestling when I was coming up through the years. I never had a bad word to say to any of my opponents, and would be the first to congratulate them on a great match. It's good to be humble, makes you work harder and keeps you sharp. I used to talk myself into believing that every opponent that I faced was a great wrestler. Even if it was the last seeded kid in the first round.

To answer your question billyconn... no. Unfortunately I haven't watched much NCAA at all this year. Between getting my new business off the ground, helping out with the local youth sports programs, and spending quality time with my fiance and kids... I really haven't had much time to do anything else. I have been posting on here a good bit over the past few weeks... of course that is going to come to almost a complete halt as it is now the working season and I must get out there and make that money.

Great match... Metcalf just doesn't stop and that is normally what happens down the stretch, he takes over. I wanted to see him vs Schlatter again, but I don't think Dustin ever really healed from that leg injury this season.

Metcalf is a lot like his coach Tom Brands (like you said "just doesn't stop") I agree about Dustin (his leg) but he also lost a bit of his edge. Kind of like Federer has in tennis as of late (although he did have mono) but there's that extra gear missing.

Thanks for the recap. I finally got to watch the fight. You called the stoppage right on the button. Karo got caught and was in serious trouble at the time of the stoppage. It's a shame because he was controlling the fight up until that point.
