View Full Version : Underrated Jabbers

Later in his career Ray Mercer developed a very, very nasty jab. Tore Wladimir's face apart even though Mercer was well past 40 at the time and was dominated in said fight.

Yes, Mercer was able to land the jab frequently on Wlad, I remember Mercer trying to bait him in, and throwing the most significant jab of the ropes that night, too bad he barely landed a right hand that night.

I think Rahmans jab is very underrated, it's very under used by him, in replace of it, he sometimes falls in love with that overhand right, which at times leaves him wide open for a good counter punch.

Nino Valdez, on film he had a powerful telephone pole jab that he used frequently. He used his long Jab to control ezzard charles in the fight. Charles remarked after he was very suprised by valdez jab.

Jersey Joe Walcott, he tripled the jab.....mixed it up throwing to the head/body/head....watch his first fight with louis, louis didnt know how to deal with it. I never seen anyone make a jab so tricky. He would switch with the shuffle and jab with his right hand then switch back!

Zora Folley- IN HIS PRIME One of the best jabs of that era in any weight class, back in the late 1950s he won fights alone on his jab. It was fast, crisp, elegant, and thrown with authority.

Ernie Terrell- Watch some of his fights other than Ali, He had quite the impressive Jab. He was 6'6 84" reach and used this to his advantage, beating the top smaller fighters on the outside by outjabbing them. His jab was long, very fast and fluid, and very accurate.

Bob Foster- Outside of Harold Johnson, he may have had the greatest jab in lightheavyweight history. He was the first to cut Ali, totally outjabbed Ali.

Archie Moore- had 78" reach, really long for his height. He outjabbed many great fighters, and used that long reach of his very intelligently. His Jab was one of the most accurate I have seen, very precise, very smooth.

Tony Tucker- At 6'6 220lb heavyweight contender, you would expect a man his size to have a jab, but he had a very good one.

Tyrell Biggs- His jab was his good weapon.

Pinklon Thomas- Outside of holmes, the best jab of any heavyweight of that era. Holmes wanted no part of it

Carl truth Williams- He outjabbed Larry the entire fight

Buster Douglas- maybe the best ever jab of a superheavyweight?

suzie took most the wind out of my sails, great list... but remember Andrew Golota against Bowe. He was beating him jab for jab, very impressive. Also, I liked the way Chavez used his jab to set up his other punches. And where would Monzon have been without his jab?

other than that, g.g. allin is my all-time favorite jabber.

Foster actually was one of if not the only person ever to cut up Ali's face, which I find incredible.

That jab of his was fucking lethal.

Tyson, Frazier (short-armed pressure fighters get little credit for their jabs, but these two threw some crushing jabs). Dempsey (althought he prefered to call it a "jolt" because it was a power punch designed to seriously wound or finish a man)

Fantastic post!!!!

I think you are the ONLY person I have seen on here other than myself who mentioned Douglas...everytime this thread creeps up, I bring him up and noone else bites.

His jab was picture perfect and one of the most powerful I have ever seen.

They didn't call him "The Ringmaster" for nothing, but he ended up pretty average compared to what eneded up expected of him.

He actually knocked Mike Williams down with a jab once. That was the fight that made me think that a match with Tyson might not have been quite the mismatch that everyone seemed to think it was at the time.

(Didn't think that Douglas would win, but that he'd give Tyson problems in the early rounds)

i know not your first choice ,but he had/has a fantastic jab. he didnt have a hook to his name his right hand was alright but left him open....but his jab was a mixture of ike qurtey's ram rod and winky's double jab.

he knocked out lingesi with it with the best jab i have ever seen. it was on kotv a year ago.
single one shot jab on the chin put him to sleep. broke lengesi's nose and bloodied him to pieces.

i have it on my digi box and trying to find a way to put it on to youtube.

Thanks for realising a sincere question there, John. I wasn't familiar with him, so I thought I would ask... now I have something else to read about!

In addition to the above, I think by far, the most underrated jab in recent times was Michalczewski.

He had a terrific jab and was he ever accurate with it. It seemed like the guy never ever hit air & lots of guys throw a lot but miss a lot too. Not Michalczewski. And I love the guy that ends a good combination with a stiff jab and just set the table for themselves. You just don't see it all that often. That Michalczewski jab was kind of like the Griffith jab and he'd fire it--untelegraphed--when his feet were in that perfect position and that jab would land full force. The punch would always seem to land at 85-90% extension in there & was never a slapping tpe but always a real stiff jab nobody is going to walk through. And lots of times the other guys would have the reach advantage and be good jabbers themselves.

It seems like just the other day that the michalczewski-hill fight was on ABC and everyone knew about Dariusz somewhat but figured Hill to outjab the guy with that mobility and reach advantage and pick and peck style of his. But then you watch the bout transpire on tv & it's the guy with the shorter reach that's outjabbing one of the premeir jabbers. Really an eye opening experience and really makes you take notice of the guy and his tools in there.

Well just at the very time they were speculating he might be the best lightweight in the world (ahead of Camacho, Davis, Rosario etc) he fell from his perch.

Yes i remember that, i was close to ringside for the Tyson v Spinks fight and i remember how stunned i was seeing Buster win like that, he was actually supposed to be the cannon fodder for the younger stronger looking Williams..

I also rate Bruce Seldons jab as incredible.. you may have forgotten how fast he was for a pretty big heavyweight..

Ty Biggs too.... I was a massive Biggs fan..

Every of his attacks depends of his jabs........His jabs were truly great set ups to his straight right hand or right uppercut......

And he was good outboxing opponents with his jab as well.....

McCallum, Toney. Fullmer had the ugliest jab ever but when he used it, it did work for him. Buddy McGirt had a great jab. Greg Haugen had a very effective jab when he was at his best.

When he used it his jab was insane, very long, very heavy maybe harder than Listons? In the Chuvalo fight he was snapping Chuvalo's head back every time he hit with the jab.

Not sure what's what with this thread??? I thought it was about 'underrated' jabbers?? But everyones bringing up people who had well known good jabs?? Is it actually examples of fighters who don't generally get recognised for their jabs that we're looking for?? Michael Moorer's one was good I reckon that isn't exactly raved about

Mike Weaver and Duane Thomas. Weaver's thought of as a slugger, but watch his bout with Scott Ledoux. He puts on a clinic. As for Thomas, he threw one of the hardest jabs ever. Not in 2's and 3s. Just one's and it was jolting.
