Some "credible" boxing writers actually gave Silva a chance.
Jones was on this meat like a lion, he knew he would win in good, dramatic fashion

Absolutely. What does UFC gain from a RJJ , Silva fight? Nothing.
Silva is going against a boxing legend, and BOXING HIM!!
Worst case scenario (and the most likely one imo) is Silva gets knocked out, and people start looking at UFC as 2nd rate competition.
Do I want to see the fight ? You bet. But it aint my business. Its dana's. Dana has every right to defend it.

Doesnt he now consider Boxing second rate?He shits all over the sport every chance he gets yet was a amatuer Boxer himself and even challenged Ortiz to a Boxing fight. He also used to run a Boxing type aerobics class.Isnt this a golden oppurtunity to prove to the world that UFC fighters are legit?
Oh i see.... he can issue challenges to boxers to fight ufc, but when a ufc guy wants to fight a boxer in boxing he cant... LOL!!!!! i shoulda predicted that.
props to silva btw...

They are legit. They are legit MMA fighters... how does a boxing match prove that they are legit MMA fighters? Do you think Roy Jones would fight Silva in the UFC? Do you think that any promoter that handled Roy would allow him to fight Silva in the UFC? Hell no.
I don't see how anyone can bash on Dana White. The man forces Silva to fight every top Challenger in the World. Dana White forces ALL of the UFC Champions to fight the top fighters in the world. That's more than you can say for most boxing promoters who usually always choose the path of least resistance for their fighters, and only plug away for big money bouts rather than seeing the true top contenders get their shots.
If we want to do it fair, and I bet Dana White would agree to this... let them fight twice. One MMA fight, and one boxing match. Silva would be jumping out of his skin for an opportunity like that... I bet Jones would decline.

The difference is that Silva called out Jones, not the other way around.

Dana can afford to do this because he is the one and only promoter of the UFC ,, Im pretty sure if had competition he would be a lot more selective about who fights who .

Possibly, and that's a good point... but why did he throw Chuck Liddell into that Pride Tournament then? Your theory doesn't really work anyways, because half of the time the top boxers are under the same promotional banner.

Dana gets to pick and choose who he signs, so picking out the #1 contender amongst them isn't as daunting as if he went around, making Silva fight the #1 contender from every other organization. Imagine how many defenses HW champs could rack up if they were only defending their title against people from the same promotion. That's a big reason why the HW division in the UFC blows chunks right about now.
Dana White is nothing more than a loudmouth pussy, who likes to run things on his terms and pay his fighters shit compared to what they're worth. He brags about how well the company's doing but cries poverty at the bargaining table. I can't say I blame him for it, because boxing promoters are guilty of some of the same...but this doesn't make either party less of a douche for doing it. Particularly when White's made his promoting bread by bashing boxing around every corner, while developing into the same thing he's ripping on. He's like what would happen if Vince McMahon became a boxing promoter.
With this, Dana's just showing he's also a hypocrite who loves to talk shit as long as it's on his terms. Just keep blabbing, Dana. As long as he has people willing to fight for peanuts just to say they're in the UFC, the gravy train's going to keep right on rolling.

Dana should have let them fight under K1 rules.
He knows the average boxing fan or person in general for that matter is stupid and if Sliva lost tons of idiots will down play MMA.

Silva should leave the UFC and fight Jones anyway. He would make more money from a boxing PPV than he ever would in the UFC making 75K a fight.

doesn't matter because Liddell is strictly a UFC fighter win or lose he will come back to UFC .. Dana had everything to gain and nothing to lose by letting Chuck fight in pride .. pride and ufc do not compete for the same fighters , and if chuck loses Dana does not lose control of the UFC and Chuck can still be the UFC champion and he is still controlled by dana, unlike boxing if a promoter's fighter loses his champion ship belt they loses his undefeated record he loses the power of negotiation..
Dana doesn't have this issue because he sit at all ends of the table , he's the negotiator for both fighter , the promoter and the sanctioning body and the owner of the UFC governing body he get paid no matter what.
but if the two Pride and UFC compete under separate sanctioning body that governed the rules and negotiation, the lay out would look completely different in UFC and Pride .

Its a good business decision. Actually not doing it would be a horrible business decision. Thats all. Dana represents Zuffa first and foremost, you can't blame him for this. If I was in his position I would do all in my power to prevent it also.

Defend it? Are you kidding me?
Dana White's called out boxers to fight in the octagon on multiple occasions prior to this to "prove" that UFC has superior fighters. In doing so, he left himself wide open to something exactly like this. Now that someone's played his own card against him, he plays the bitch move- instigating a fight, only to back out when he doesn't hold every advantage
If he didn't want to look like an idiot, he could've kept his damn mouth shut and promoted his sport without taking every chance he could to rip on boxing. Spewing the bullshit he has is the sole reason that many MMA fanboys "hate" boxing, even though most have never taken the time to actually watch and learn about it. His mentality singlehandly created the (wrongful) illusion to new combat fans that you shouldn't be fans of both sports. His attitude, which infected impressionable MMA fans, in turn, made alot of boxing fans resentful as fuck towards him, and subsequently, MMA. That is why there's more of a rift between the two fanbases than there should be.
That's why I have a big problem with him. He could've been successful promoting the UFC without pulling that pro wrestling propaganda monkey shit.

It's too bad this will never happen. It could have been a historic match. It might even have been a really good fight. Irregardless, the promotion would have been something that caught the casual fan's interest.

Some very good points in this thread. These are the facts:
-Roy Jones WILL NOT fight under any other rules besided boxing.
-It would be a monster promotion!
-Dana White is wise to protect his top fighter and not tarnish the lustre.
-But Silva SHOULD leave the UFC now, fight Jones for $5 million (which is equal to what he'd make in 10 UFC matches) and either Dana would be forced to be involved in a co-promotion or battle it out in court afterward.

The same would go if Jones or any other boxer went to MMA. If they lost then the MMA fans would go nuts (like they have in the past) b/c a boxer lost in MMA. Point is MMA and Boxing are different. A MMA fighter can't walk in to a Boxing ring and exect to beat a boxer...just like a boxer cant enter the MMA ring and expect to beat the best MMA fighter. If a boxer and an MMA fighter trained for 6 mnths to a year then they could make an impact in either sport.

Isn't it REALLY all about money?
1)If Dana got a significant cut of a huge payday the Silva-Jones fight would be on.
2)Silva can make multi millions if he does it and I am sure his management knows that. Why aren't they demanding that this fight take place? Will the UFC match what Silva could make?
