Ecko jumps into ring with Cotto partnership

Fashion designer Marc Ecko has always been a boxing fan. Now, he is getting the opportunity to step inside the ring.
Well, not Ecko himself, but at least his brand.
The Ecko brand logo will be worn by welterweight champion Miguel Cotto Saturday night when Cotto meets Alfonso Gomez for the WBA welterweight title in Atlantic City. This will be the first of three Cotto fights where the Ecko brand will be displayed on the boxer's trunks, robe and T-shirts.
The partnership between Ecko and Cotto was a "no-brainer" for Ecko, who made his name in the sports world by purchasing Barry Bonds' 756th home run for $750,000. Cotto's characteristics in the boxing ring are exactly what the fashion icon wants his brand to be associated with. According to Ecko, Cotto is a national hero.
"Miguel is exciting and fearless. He doesn't back down and remembers where he came from. He reflects the values of the Ecko brand," Ecko says.
This will not be the first time Ecko has partnered with the boxing community or athletes. He is a sponsor of Junior Welterweight boxer Dmitriy Salita and has sponsored other Mixed Martial Arts fighters. The connection with famous athletes because of his celebrity have helped him build relationships and live out a childhood dream of "being on the sidelines."
"I've been able to use my brand to meet with a lot of interesting people," Ecko says. "It makes the experience of being a fan richer."
The negative reputation that has become associated with boxing is something that bothers Ecko, and he wants to show that its often poor public perception is not justified.
Cotto's universal appeal was particularly attractive to Ecko in his decision to move forward with the partnership.
"I've sponsored snowboarders, BMX riders and graffiti artists. What those people all had in common are their values appeal to my values," Ecko says. "In boxing, there are tough fights, it's exciting. Teaming up with Cotto was a no-brainer."
Five Ecko stores will soon open in Cotto's native Puerto Rico.
