truthfully in my opinion
Gomez looked worse than
Cotto looked good
no doubt Gomez looked bad at the hands of cotto
but it wasnt fair to begin with gomez not in the same class and there are several fighters you could have put in the ring with gomez and they would have looked just as amazing..
Cotto No doubt is one of the best in the game right now period....
keep in my that his opponent was not ready for that level of skill....

Agreed, everyone knew what was going to happen but then acts like Cotto beat the greatest fighter in the world. We all knew what would happen and all Cotto did was do what HE WAS SUPPOSE TO DO against a fighter of Gomez's caliber. and I like Cotto but come on...

Well you just stated why Cotto is getting tons of praise. "Cotto is no doubt one of the best in the game right now" so what more needs to be said? There was absolutely nothing you could even nit-pick about his performance. Mayweather surely knows Cotto would be the best he has faced

I honestly thought Gomez would be much tougher due to the face he fought at the higher weights. Cotto impressed me

Cotto was being kind... He could have really hurt Gomez. Keep it real kids. Mayweather is missing in action for a reason. He wants nothing to do with not just Cotto but also Margarito.
Mayweather could easily Margo; I have no doubt about that

It was a blood sacrifice from the moment it was signed, just something to pass the time.

I think I did too. I can't remember if my official prediction was in the 4th or 5th though

Eh I think most of us that were picking Gomez did so just because he was a big underdog and could possibly spoil plans that Cotto was looking for down the road.
I guess we were all just thinking about how he overlooked Corley and how he nearly paid the price for that. But he seems to have matured since then. He looked just right against Gomez. And Gomez just showed what level he is on. No more or less than that. Gomez is still a tough nugget though.
While you should rightfully see Cotto as a big threat to Margo, you should also realise that Margo is much better than Gomez. Margo-Cotto is the premiere welterweight fight and that's really all there is to it. We don't need Mayweather in the welterweights anymore. Bring on Cotto-Margarito!

I agree with the thread. Cotto is my favorite fighter, but we all knew Gomez was a bumb. However, I'm glad Cotto got in some rounds to show people his hand speed, footwork, and his overall boxing skills that have always been there.

these are things any intelligent boxing fan already knew cotto had.... he just went in there and displayed his goods... now everyone is going to say cotto is god because he beat the shit out of an underskilled gomez ... who might have made it to later rounds....
floyd would have done the same to gomez
marg & shane would have ko'd him early as well... probably not as convincing but it would have been clear
Why was this fight even made again? I felt it's kind of a rip off. The Margarito-Cintron fight was 100 times more meaningful. Why couldn't Cotto fight a real top guy?

Are you insinuating Cotto has been fighting bums? Tough guy . . . like who? Pavlik? Wlad?
:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
. . . by the way the "suppose to be" real tough guy is retired and is only coming off his self declared retirement to fight Grand Pa De La Hoya and the Big Show.

Not bums, but he has a long list of B level fighters. I'll give it to him, he has skills and a punch but his resume hasn't improved in from his last several fights.
he just beat judah and mosley and his resume hasnt improved?!
Like I said.
Judah??? Come on dude. Judah. Judah is who? A flashy cocky fighter who has been beat who? How long ago?
Mosley is a good fight. But this was way, way, way past prime Mosley, there is no way around that. Guys like Cintron have looked way better than Mosley against common opponents.

Yeah, at one point he could have taken him out but dropped his hands and walked away because it did look like he was pitying Gomez. I really did think Gomez was gonna be a lot more competitive in this bout.

I get the hype surround ing Cotto. He's one of the best guys in boxing today. That deserves hype. But I would have like to see him fight a better fighter last night. I can understand why he didn't though. Cause other then Clottey there wasn't really a top guy out there for him to fight.
Other then Floyd and Cotto before last night I would have seen the division like this:
3. Shane Mosley
4. Kermit Cintron
5. Carlos Quintana
6. Paul Williams
7. Antonio Margarito
8. Andre Berto
9. Yuri Nuzhnenko
10. Zab Judah
11. Joshua Clottey
12. Luis Collazo
Shane he just beat. Cintron and Margo were fighting on the undercard. Paul Williams is going to be facing Quintana, who Cotto already beat. Berto's people were never going to put him in with Cotto at this point in his career. Nobody really knows who Nuzhnenko is. Zab he's beaten, Clottey could have been a good fight but he's waiting on his manditory, and everyone's already beaten Collazo.
So the options for Cotto were try to get Clottey to for go his manditory and fight you instead (could have been done) or fight a guy with a name who your going to look good against while you wait for the only guy not named mayweather left for you to fight in the division (the winner of the Margo Cintron fight) to establish himself. I would have rather seen the Clottey fight but it would have ended pretty similarly and wouldn't have really proved much. Cause honestly who actually thinks Clottey would have had a chance.
Now looking forward the division is going to be pretty cleaned out after the Margo Cotto fight. Floyd will have to face the winner cause there will be nobody left to face. And both those guys have the style to give Floyd a bad night.
Eh
Cotto resume 10 times better than Maragrito.
Judah
Mosley
Maliganggi
Quintana
Torres
Corley
Urkal
margarito:
Cintron
Clottey
And A Loss to Williams.
What's your point?????? Who is even bringing Margarito up??? Do you see me parading Margarito as the next Messiah like many do Cotto after looking great against not so great opposition?
Cotto fighting B's has nothing to do with Margarito.
Mikey

Judah is a A skilled fighter with C style mentality, he has been in there with Mosley another excellent Welterweight, Cintron is in the same league as Collazo maybe even lower than that.
YOu forget he stopped Quintana?

Cotto Owned the Quintana who owned Williams who owned Margarito. :happy
?? Who has Margarito fought and beat??????????? He got beat by Williams, Clottey and looked good last night against a mentally weak Cintron. C'mon now?
Look.. Come July, Cotto will show you why he is the MAN at 147lbs right now.
careful now, styles makes fights. just cuz cotto beat quintana doesn't mean he would have beaten margo, williams.
Judah is a A skilled fighter with C style mentality:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl , he has been in there with Mosley another excellent Welterweight, Cintron is in the same league as Collazo maybe even lower than that.

Judah is a B level stepping stone. Especially now and when Cotto fought him.
So he stopped Quintana. Eh...The low blows were impressive though.

Quite clearly a hater for some reason, Cotto will school Maragrito and give him a boxing lesson, Margarito is a good fighter but not a great one, I dont see how Margarito can beat him, Cotto could beat him at boxing, Margarito just too slowwill look to plant his feet and Cotto will just wear him down......... plus its not like Judah has lost to dross is it, stepping stone is just ludricous.

best post all night! that win has got loads of people convinced that he can beat mayweather, a win over a bad alfonso gomez has not got me confinced that cotto has the skills and ability to do what he done to gomez to mayweather , gomez looked 1 dimensional a opponent which cotto is not going to gain anything other than coinfidence, people are moving cotto up in there rankings over that win! what a step down that shane mosely, mayweather is in a different class and will shown that to cotto if they ever meet!

Everyone knew Gomez was a bum before hand, seems like people are forgetting who Cotto has faced prior to Gomez, when he beats Maragrito he will have basically cleaned up the division bar Mayweather, maybe he will have to beat De La Hoya at one point too.

But wasn't Judah the same guy boxing fans where toting as the faster fighter and the guy who could beat Mayweather when they faced off? So he's a formidable opponent when fighting Mayweather and not Cotto? Be real, and as far as the comment about Sugar Shane being way, way, way past his prime, that just shows your lack of boxing knowledge, Shane Mosley is STILL a top 5 welteweight and not THAT far removed from what he was capable of in his prime. I can only see 3 welterweight that can beat him right now, Mayweather, Quintana and Cotto who's already beaten him. Let me ask you this, what welterweight fighter has a better resume than Cotto? other than of course Mosley.

Let's not leave out the great Hatton too, because we all know Cotto HAS to knockout all of Floyds leftovers and he's still not good enough to step in the ring with Mayweather right??? People need to stop keeping Mayweather's throne warm til he decides to step in the ring with a REAL WELTERWEIGHT!!!
But wasn't Judah the same guy boxing fans where toting as the faster fighter and the guy who could beat Mayweather when they faced off? PBF fighting Judah was a sham. I mean the guy had lost to Stinks, arguably to Pineda, and to Baldomir and yet PBF fought him anyway. Judah will always have a punchers chance as he proved in the Stinks rematch but he is very overhyped and is a stepping stone in the WW div.
The fact that Mosley and PBF declined to fight Margarito means something. And the fact that Cotto isn't calling out Margarito or PBF also means something. It means that the WW is still acting like a bunch of girls not fighting each other. There is one man who is willing to take on anyone in that division and that is Margarito. Cotto I'm sure will fight anyone his pimp, I mean his daddy, I mean Arum tells him too, but that doesn't help the division. PBF is after money, and rightfully, he is in his 5th weight class and has paid his dues. Mosley is an old man and I'm sure any elite can beat him at this point.
