its a very deep division. Welterweight always has been a good division. Its always provided some very good fights. I love welterweight.

Don't forget about Clottey, that man can box with the best of them.

Im glad. Williams and Cintron proved tonight that they are major players at WW now. Cintron is becoming an offensive machine under Steward. His right hand has always been great but now its just devastating. Williams proved that he can make his style work at the elite level. Fighters like Cotto and Mayweather will have very tough fights against either of these 2 fighters.

147 is great - the best division in boxing

good right hand

That division is alway's deep, in the late 90's they had

Trinidad
De La Hoya
Quartey
Whitaker
Mayorga
Six Heads Lewis
Vernon Forrest
Shane Mosley

By far the best division in boxing and boxing history

dont forget motocity carr as a contender back in the 90's

light and middleweight where also great divisions through out history

Oscar would clean that division out if he had the time and would still destroy anyone and everyone in there apart from Mayweather.

mayweather ALREADY beat him
mosley ALREADY beat him... twice
williams... he would NOT destroy, too many punches, too big, can fight at any distance. i honestly dont think oscar destroys him... im not even sure he wins right now against this young fighter, who throws 1000 punches a fight.

cotto... good fight

margarito
cintron
mayorga

are the easiest fights for him... but i dont see how he cleans out the division at all, especially since 2 of the top fighters there, hes 0-3 against.

chavez jr...

they are actully hard to rank, because some beat others while lose to others... but i have them ranked here based on where i think they stand overall in the division, and head to head, combined. so while i think clottey may beat cotto or whatever, i cant put him above cuz his standing in the division isnt even close.

You could put Hatton amongst them and Tszyu has made noises lately(although who knows what's left or how committed he'd be).Still, it would be another BIG name making the division what many of us wanted at either 140 or 147 for a long time.

Mosley
Tszyu
Mayweather
Hatton
Cotto

ill never add hatton... hes much too small imo. hell, he looks small against some 140lbers, let alone 147 with guys like williams, margarito, hoya there. hes 5'6, and with his 'fighting' style, cant use it effectively against guys who are naturally much, much, much larger then him, like pure boxer can ala spinks, mayweather...

Yep and I happen to think Kermit Cintron is the 2nd best Welterweight in the world.

I think Hatton can overcome the size. For one, he gets too close to his opposition to fear reach. There has never been a boxer that has kept him on the end of a jab. And really, how many of these fighters at 147lbs could hurt him more than Tszyu did? A few.

When you think of how well guys like Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard moved up, I could see Hatton doing alright. I'm not trying to compare his skills to either of those, but it shows it can be done. If he adjusts properly to 147lbs, unlike against Collazo, I think he could do well. He'd get battered by De La Hoya and Mosley though.

Why is everyone giving Mayorga so many props? the guy is a brawler who throws slow wide puches and gets hit with ease. I can see Baldy being on this list before him. He and Judah should not be on this list

I agree the matchups are crazy. Williams will beat Mosley just like Forest did if not easier, yet Mosley would beat a less active boxer like Cotto. Cintron with his head together under Manny has a good chance against anyone. Floyd would get tested vs both Williams & Cotto so it wont surprise me if he dodges them. Hoya needs to STFU tonight and retire and let the young guns have their fun in the spotlight.... He had his time and his time is up in my opinion. Berto and Chavez Jr are both 2 yrs away and by then Mosley and Margarito may be/should be out of the way.

ohshit!! I forgot about Hatton who would be a great matchup against any of them.

147 lbs is head and shoulders the best division in the sport today, and probably the best of the last 10 years as well. :good

Imo. the idea that "this and this says that 147 is his division now.. and going up and down" is a clear sign that there are too many divisions in the lower weights.

Once you got to 160 or above you generally stay there unless you get fat or old. Except for very few exceptions.

At 140 etc. the fighters go up and down like boomerangs and I really think it is devaluing the whole adea of winning belts in more divisions. There should at the VERY LEASt be 8-10 pounds between each division. And the idea that smaller people should have smaller division differences is obvoiously not working since we see them skipping up and down divisions as if three divisions was one.

In my book multidivision champ in 147 and below generally means little since they are practically all doing it because of the ease of it. It is not the exceptional fighter that does it. Everyone does it - which makes multidovision belts at 147 and below worth little.

But yes, if those people stay at 147 then it is probably the deepest division in boxing right now. For the couple of months that lasts untill they are somewhere else.

Well, I disagree with you deram, but you make a good point, there's a lot of weight jumping going on in the lower divisions.

There should at the VERY LEASt be 8-10 pounds between each division.

You do realize there are only 7 lbs between SMW and LHW though? There are also only 7 lbs between 140 and 147, 147 and 154, etc.
