View Full Version : Why is the boxing public setting Miguel Cotto up for destruction?

I think that Cotto's going to get a very bad back lash for losing to PBF and PBF is going to get no credit for beating a guy that was clearly the guy the public wanted to see him fight.

I can see threads about Cotto not being a good fighter ...

I can see a thread about people knowing that Cotto wasn't on his level and that Floyd isn't fighting anyone ...

Then comes more names and more criticizm on both ends ...

Its not fair -- Cotto obviously doesn't want to fight PBF and is trying to come to terms with being satisfied w/ having his biggest payday and a loss.

Shame on the public for forcing this guy to fight Floyd when its apparent that he doesn't want to.

He's been protected his whole career and due to the chatter of fight commentators and boxing columnist, the judgement of the fighting community has been clouded.

His words after the Gomez fight was that "he wasn't scared of Floyd" ... a fighter that says he's not scared is scared. He chose the wrong words and shouldve said something about how confident he is against any fighter including Mayweather. Any fighter that i've seen never had mentioned scared when asked about another fighter rather saying he's scared or his potential opponent is scared.

I seen that ESPN is jumping on the bandwagon and is further setting people up for a terrible fall.

Floyd is a star ... he's not a guy who just stepped on to the scene ... how did he get here?
By beating the best and fighting the best ... I don't see why he's getting so much criticizm for fighting DLH a second time, any fighter in the fight game and any fight would fight a guy who they knew they could beat for 30m. This guy has paid his dues and should be given a little room to do whatever he chooses from now on.

He's been consistantly doing this for 12 years and hasn't got a chance to chill and live outside of the boxing world.

I agree that I want to see the fight happen, but i'm not going to put everything into because I have a feeling that the aftermath is going to be the same as any other Floyd Mayweather fight.

What the hell is up with your obsession with Cotto? It's beginning to scare me.

Trainer and ESPN boxing analyst Teddy Atlas doesn't believe you can take Mayweather out of the welterweight equation.

"Mayweather is there, even though he's an event fighter," Atlas said. "He's not retired. He's not inactive. He's undefeated. He's still at the top of the heap. I don't see how you can't include Mayweather."

Atlas believes that Mayweather and Cotto should fight soon to give boxing fans a competitive match.

"If I was a fan, I'd be little upset with the powers that be for forcing us to see De La Hoya and Mayweather again," Atlas said. "Based on what happened the first time, it feels like you're being used, you're being manipulated. You have a businessman [De La Hoya] who has lost all of his big fights fighting the best guy in the sport. What's going to change from the first time?

"Let's open it up so we can see something different. Let's see something less predictable. Let's see someone else get a chance to play that part against Mayweather."

Atlas doesn't believe that Cotto needs Mayweather because at this point, Cotto is not interested in being "an event fighter."

Cotto doesn't need to beata Margarito to deserve a shot at MW !!

Was Hatton's win over Castillo really enough to earn him a shot at Floyd ?

Cotto has proved himself already ..Its time for the 2 best weleter weights in the world to meet ..If your against that than your against great match making !!

Cotto would probably be Mayweathers best win, esp if Cotto comes in after having beaten Margarito. Nobody could say a damn thing to degrade that possible win for Mayweather.

Cotto's the real deal no ifs, ands or buts. The boxing community is only trying to set up a fight that they want to see. If a guy gets destroyed well thats boxing. You are insinuating that Cotto is afriad of Floyd. Maybe. Perhaps he should take a few more fights if this is the case. But believe me the reaction will not be the same after this fight if Floyd wins. You can rest at ease the boxing public is going to give Floyd 100% cred for this win cause cotto is the real deal and there is no angle that the haters can take.

The boxing public isn't setting Miguel Cotto up for destruction. You've got it all wrong. The rest of the welterweight division is setting themselves up for destruction - at the hands of Miguel Cotto. And yes, that includes Floyd Mayweather Jr.

True confession ... I figured that Cotto not calling Floyd out is a ploy by his team to force the public to demand the fight.

I respect Cotto as a fighter and shouldn't be bashing him ...

I have a grudge against Cotto because he beat a fighter that I liked and embarrassed him (Carlos Quintana) ... I picked Quintana to out box Cotto to a UD ... but he got knocked out in 5 ... although I respect Cotto's skill and physicality ... I hate him ... its shitty, because he's probably a cool guy ...

So Fitz, would Gomez size give Mayweather problems?

fitzgeraldz
04-16-2008, 10:42 PM
As far as Cotto v Mayweather ... all bias aside ... stylistically Cotto doesn't stand a chance.

Floyd is a special talent ... and fighters like him don't come around that often.

I'm sure that the truth will come out when the fight happens and what i've been saying all along -- will become the truth.

fitzgeraldz
04-16-2008, 10:44 PM
So Fitz, would Gomez size give Mayweather problems?

Size and physicality has nothing to do with the outcome of a fight ... I said that if Cotto boxed then he would have a better chance, but if he elected to brawl then he would get caught with some bullshit and get KO'd.

I still question his chin and I still question his apparent two fisted power ... I've yet to see him use the right hand effectively.

He's a true southpaw and it shows in his style ... he gets hit by right hands on the regular and he doesn't throw the right hand effectively ...

Cotto is playing Tito v Mayweather who's playing Hopkins ...
