"You were always known for having a rock solid chin. Who hit you the hardest in your professional career?"
Ray Mercer: Tommy Morrison. Morrison hit me so hard to the body with those hooks that I was actually farting in the ring. (Laughs) You have to act like…you can’t let the guy see that you’re hurt, but I’m pretty sure he heard and smelled a couple of things. (Laughs) But he hit me harder than I was ever hit in boxing.
:lol::lol::lol:
That's a hell of a compliment coming from the top ten ATG chin of Mercer.
Also gives credence to something I heard on here once. That Morrison had as much firepower as anyone that ever stepped into the ring for the first three rounds.

O god not another Tommy Morrison thread. He was one of the biggest punks and unclassy fighters of the 1990s, and he had a chin made of pure china.

Wonderful input there, Q.
You can shut up and come back when you've got some actual input instead of irrelevent whining and crying.

I may be wrong, but I believe Razor Ruddock said Tommy hit him harder than Tyson. Thats also some high praise.

Tommy Morrison hit very hard no doubt.
But I dont see the relevance of Mercer having a great chin when he's clearly talking about being hurt by BODY SHOTS.

The right uppercut left hook combination Mercer ate without even blinking is one of the hardest punches I've ever seen land.
He was hit upstairs, obviously.

Yes, but did he say Morrison's shots to the chin and head rock him more than those Lewis or Holyfield hit him with ?
As you say, he ate them without blinking.
He thinks Morrison hit hardest, and I take his words for it 100% but the quote suggests it's absolutely nothing to do with any impression shots to his chin made. Of course he felt them, but he remembers the body shots.
I gather he'd be saying the same thing if Morrison hadn't landed anything on his chin, simply on the strength of those body shots.
Therefore the solidness of Mercer's chin is largely irrelevant.
Sonny's jab

What IS relevant is the fact that Mercer fought Lewis, Witherspoon, W.Klitschko, S.Briggs, Holyfield, Bert Cooper etc.
And he reckons Morrison hit him hardest - that's where the compliment is.

A case can be made for Mercer not taking bodyshots as well as headshots, as Holyfield dropped him with one.
Don't know why you're arguing semantics, Jab, especially considering you seem to be thinking I'm making some grandoise statment here.

Firstly, Holyfield did NOT drop Mercer with a body shot. It was a head shot !
A left hook to the head if I remember correctly.
Second, I dont think I'm arguing semantics, I'm just pointing something out. If Mercer had never been hit hard on the chin he'd still be saying Morrison's body shots were the hardest punches he took. Therefore perhaps his chin is largely irrelevant. Or perhaps I'm wrong. It doesn't really matter.
No, I dont think you're making any "grandiose statement".
I think it's an interesting quote and I absolutely have no trouble believing what Mercer says. Morrison's power was monstrous, no question about it.

Mercer was dropped from a left hook to the chin against Holyfield. It wasn't a body shot.
Holyfield landed the left hook and Mercer reeled back, and then took a knee.

I remember hearing some time in the 90's that Morrison was the hardest puncher out there. I can't really give a source for this, but Mercer's statement seems to back it up.

In the old days fighters used to say the guy who knocked him out hit the hardest.
These days it seems fighters say someone they beat hit the hardest.
Intertsting....
There is no doubt Morrison landed some good shots in the first three rounds of his fight with Mercer, but for my money Wlad Klitschko hit Mercer harder. He had Mercer flat on his back in round one, spun his body around like a top from a hook to the jaw, and bascially went after Mercer for the duration of the fight.
After the fight, it took Mercer in interview a while to give Wlad praise. Wlad said Mercer had the best chin of the guys he fought.

Have to figure around that time Mercer also said "Fuck It" and quit against Briggs.
Not suprising considering he was like 45, but it's telling.

Its not about the power, its landing the power shots. Power without the ability to land is nothing. Morrison's power is up there but he doesnt have the ability to land his big shots on top level fighters, hes a big immobile Roider.

Mercer was a fat old man without ambition when he fought Wlad. When he fought Morrison he was a hungry young tiger, big difference.

Well, that explains how Mercer beat Morrison. The toxic gas bombs anesthetized him more than Mercer's punches

it's obvious morrison hit hard, but the question was who got the big shot in first, and he did more often than not. kind of a modern day bob satterfield.

Wouldn't doubt it. Morrison threw punches with the speed of a much lower weight fighter, and when he wanted to he could land them in combination.
He threw every punch with bad intentions as well, certainly committed more then Lennox Lewis did at times. There was never anything conservative about Morrison's style, except when he fought Foreman. Even then his punches were meant to knock the shit out of Foreman.

I seen him get shook and rocked by 2 many and Bent was a pretty bad fight...Tommy had a middleweight chin, he had a good left hook but its a funny thought, you can build up the body but a sub- middleweight chin is a sub-middleweight chin and for this there is no cure

It is funny how fighters always remember the hardest hitters being the ones they beat....You would think Mercer would have said Wlad with that rocket of a hook he was hit and dropped with.

I remember this. I don't remember him saying he'd knock Marciano out exactly, but I remember him, doing what he normally does, talking out of his ass in a matter-of-fact way. He says the most ridiculous thing as if he were stating "Well, one plus one is two...Bop, bop, bop, I clearly don't have HIV." I can only remember him being looked at incredulously while stating his doubt that Marciano could hang with him given he was 6'2, 225 pounds or whatever.:lol::lol:

Why are people surprised by what Mercer said?? - I think Morrison was a real good fighter on his day - and definately an ATG puncher - one of the most exciting fighters to watch ever too - I put Morrison pure power leagues ahead of say Lennox and Holy and maybe would've put him on a par with Tyson - nobody gives modern contenders like him enough respect - he may have not been the greatest of all time or anything but he was a very very good exciting crowd pleasing KO artist - I loved watching him - the Morrison-Ruddock fight is one of my favourite to watch ever - there can be no doubts whatsoever about his punching power - I don't get it?? Has nobody ever seen any of his KO highlights??

For all the talk of Tommy's power, ironically, it was his strategic sense...his common sense, ringwise that contributed to his finest victory...over George Foreman.

I'm not suprised that Ray Mercer would say this- Morrison was a very heavy hitter and christ did Mercer seem to be asleep in those early rounds and there to be hit, so of course he'd know exactly how well Tommy could punch. Ditto for his fight with Lewis, Holyfield, Moorer and Cooper, which means obviously that if rated above these names then Tommy did have some world class power.
On the Foreman Fight that cobra brings up- this would be another good 'fix' on Tommy's power, except in relation to another big white left-hooker- Gerry Cooney. I've only ever heard/read George remarking that Tommy 'ran' or 'didn't sand and fight' etc., has anyone ever heard/read of Foreman lauding Tommy's power, like for e.g. the way he spoke of George Cooney's power making his leg twitch uncontrollably. Just a curiosity of mine..., always found Cooney's power bizzare.
I like big George, but just the same, he would have been extremely complimentary of tommy's power had he been able to catch and ko him. Just the fact that Tommy fought a strategic, tactical sort of fight vs Foreman, that his power wasn't showcased may have been a reason, but i think that if George had wobbled and ko'ed Morrison like he did foreman, he would have lauded Tommy's power like he did Cooney's. Morrison just pissed off George by the way that he outsmarted him and won in that fight...the way I bet Moorer wished that he had fought.
