View Full Version : jump rope, shadowboxing, heavy bag
question: do you usually do these activities for a set amount of time or in rounds? I simply don't know which is better. I'll typically do jump rope for 15-20 minutes straight, as I see it as a warm-up, but I will still mix in sprints, double unders, etc. to make it anaerobic at points. As for heavybag, I don't see one way as necessarily better. Maybe if you're planning on going very intense on it, rounds would be better. But if you're focusing on general technique, you could just allot 10-20 mins where you focus on different aspects throughout the session.
what do you guys think about this?
When my trainer isn't there I usually do something like this.
I jump rope the same as you, 15 minutes straight with situps, pushups and a few other things in between to warm up. Then I rotate all my limbs, and stretch the legs a little. After that I shadowbox two or three rounds, depending on my mood. Next bag work for about 10 rounds, first some technique based rounds, the last ones are usually drill style. After that some jump rope and shadowboxing. And of course cooling down.
Unless of course... there's someone to spar with like today.

it depends, we have conditioning days where we do a very intense training session and days where we focus more on skills.
when we are getting ready for a fight we do a rope drill which looks like this...
15 seconds sprint
15 seconds doubles
15 seconds sprint
15 second doubles
30 seconds break
we do this 16-22 times, for the first half we take 30 seconds rest and for the second part we take 15, for example if we are doing 22 sets, the first 12 will be done with 30 second rest and then the next 12 with 15 seconds rest inbetween sets.

I would agree that it depends. I have decided to do jump rope for, say, 15 minutes straight as a warm-up, but if I'm doing a circuit, I will do something similar to what you described.
