Joe won that fight. Great performance. Shows the type of fighter he is....he got caught early coming in with a lead right (hey, at least I called THAT in my breakdown... ), yet was able to come back strong and take 7 of the last 11 rounds.
I saw 4 very close rounds that could have went to either fighter...with 4 clearly going to each (too tipsy to care which ones right now LOL). I gave Calzaghe the nod in 3 of them, based on his control of the ring and his superior output....and, and I cant believe I am typing this, superior defense toward the second half of the fight.
But as I look across this forum I am flabbergasted...how do people have it as wide as 117-110??? Even 116-111 is stretching it. The most I could see it either was was 115-112 to Joe or 115-112 Hopkins.
Joe now has shown that his ability to adapt is beyond belief. He could have folded early..but was able to come back and really apply enough pressure to make Bernard fight. It was a great performance to really cap off a great career.
All of the posters not giving him credit should be ashamed...Hopkins fought a great fight, came in with a good gameplan and is one of the toughest SOBs alive...and Joe got the W.
I think there is alot of posturing from both sides (the fans) going on...and both men...Joe for besting one of greatest fighters to ever lace it up...Hop for still being a top fighter at such an advanced age (its why we love him). We witnessed two of the best of this era...instead of knocking each...we should recognize this.
Congrats Joe!!!! Proved me wrong!!!

I agree with your score, Sues2nd.
I will say that I suspect some deterioration on Calzaghe's part...but that may have been offset by improved ringcraft.
Yet again, an intelligent American poster showing class.

Good post sues...
Joe clearly won the fight, made Bernard fight his fight down the stretch, and outworked, outhustled, and outlanded him. Joe's a great fighter and his adaptability was on display tonight. Bernard didn't disgrace himself, actually fighting much better than many thought. For a 43 man, he's still a damn good fighter and I'd tip him to beat quite a bit of quality guys.

114-113 myself. I Gotta eat some crow but he adapted when there was adversity. :good Hopkins had control the first third of the fight, Joe took over the 2nd/3rd and the last part was pretty even. The speed, footwork and being able to adapt on the inside won the fight for him.

Props to sues who I know is a huge Hopkins fan for admitting JC did well and won the fight. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone is trying to degrade JC for looking unspectacular against Hopkins, when nobody ever has. Hopkins is one of the most awkward and cunning boxers out there, he's nearly impossible to look good against. The thing that pissed me off were the Ruiz-esque acting jobs, but ultimately it didn't impact the outcome

Chad Dawson based on his speed and advantages from the outside, but other than that...nah. He beats Tarver, Woods, Johnson, Diaconu, Erdei, Drews, and the rest of the lot. I'd actually like to see him fight Pavlik since I believe Calzaghe will fight Jones. Hopkins would put on a CLINIC so it would be a great way to go out with a win.

I cant for the life of me understand the posters trying to take credit away from EITHER MAN. They are two of the top guys in the division...two of the top guys of the era...and two of the top guys ever (top 100 easily).
So Joe looked like less of a fighter fighting against the best fighter he has ever fought. What else did these people expect. Maybe now they can understand how Hopkins didnt look like SRR against Winky...the same type of fighter (who's style doesnt allow you to look good).
And so Bernard looked like he couldnt catch up with the speed. So he lost more rounds than he won...vs one of the best (Roy is the only fighter I feel is better than Joe on Hopkins resume) he has ever faced.
The people expecting this to be a DESTRUCTION were mistaken. And I think this speaks volumes to how disappointed they were with their predictions...not necessarily the fighters.

It was a real close fight. Alot of Joe's work wasn't landing clean as he was just busy. Mind you I have no issue with him getting the decision as I can't stand guys who throw one punch and cover up/hold the rest of the way.
Hopkins' diabolical plan almost worked though. Shitty fight all around. I think I'd rather not see another Hopkins performance as long as I live. Same with Calzaghe who is quickly turning into another spoiler.
Thanks bro.

I'm slamming Calzaghe mainly because I'm not a fan, and am shamelessly having a hell of a time rubbing it in everyones' faces that Hopkins was made this so close. But I agree.. this fight being so close is more a testament to Hopkins greatness.. it's not a matter of Calzaghe just being a shitbum whose finally been exposed.

2 questions. When did you first become a fan of Hopkins? And what do you want to see him do next. You mentioned before about wanting him to fight at heavy?
I think heavy was only an option if a slower, flatfooted, smaller HW took a title. For example if Sultan had somehow miraculously taken out Wlad... I dont think its really an option to consider now. This was mentioned by Bernard (either Sultan or Maskaev), but I dont think was ever serious.
Now I could see him taking on Johnson or Jones (tho I dont wanna see it...)...or Dawson (who I think he would dominate). Who knows...if that one happens, and he wins, we may see another Calzaghe - Hopkins next year.
But I would rather see him hang them up. And I HATE typing those words.

I had it 115-112 for Joe....I just can't understand how people take umbrage to people scoring it close for Joe.This was a very hard fight to score and what was seen as agression on Joe's part really wasn't that making that much of a impact. He won by simply throwing more punches. But for the most part, Bernard was able to make Joe fight at his pace, which was expected.

But if a slower Johnson (both hand and footspeed) can land that right hand and hurt Dawson...how would he be able to handle Bernard's?
Pavlik would be a GREAT choice....BTW...and your right would be a CLINIC.

Definately bad at times....good at times. I think he is getting too much flack from both sides.
YES, he could have taken a point from Joe for the low blows or the rabbit punches....but he also could have done the same for Hopkins for using his head or holding and hitting. Instead he let the fight happen and the fighters make the outcome.
I didnt like how he tried to rush Hopkins on the lowblow. Going by the rules...he has 5 mins to recover from a lowblow...bad or not. He kept stepping in and seemingly trying to force him to start again (tho I KNOW Bernard used it as a "break"...but that is smart...not dirty, as it was a lowblow...).
Like I said...bad and good.
I had it a draw, but can't argue with 114-113 for Cal.
Booooring fight though.

I thought Cortez was pretty good considering the scrutiny he was under.
I said earlier he let B-Hop hug for too long, too often, but I still had his Urgent! Quick! Intervene! attitude during Hatton vs PBF in my head (which didn't affect the outcome in that fight one cent, btw).
After giving it some thought, nah, Cortez was fairly solid.
A more jittery or biased ref would have deducted points for Calzaghe's `low blows`, whch obviously would have been the height of bullshit.

Why are people so critical of his performance I thought he was wonderful, he adjusted, he made Bernard fight his fight after round 4. He landed a lot of clean shots and was the agressor all night. He got droped so what? This is boxing! We was great and gave bernard and old fashioned ass beating. Nard did not want it after round 10, period. Congrats to the white boy!
And please lets remember he was fighting the great Bernard Hopkins who beats everybody else in the division including Dawson IMHO, he already beat tarver, KO'd johnson, almost beat jones when he was 50% the fighter he is now, jones is probably 50% a lesser fighter, so all in all it was a great win for calzaghe nothing to look down upon at all.
Actually as you can see post I posted before I saw this thread I respect hopkins a lot but it was not a close fight after the 4th round, but i can understand you are a hokins fan. And I had Bernard 10-8 after one too!

I am one of those who had it 116-111
I did too. Joe just took over the fight by the fourth round. His jab
started connecting well and often, his left hook started landing with
more power and became shorter and straighter as the fight wore on.
His speed of foot and jab kept forcing Hopkins to back up along the
ropes and at times to cower in the corners. As Manny pointed out
when Hopkins bulled forward Joe was at his best flurrying to Hopkins
head and backing quickly out of range or forcing Bernard to hold on.
Joe just dominated the fight from 4 th round on. Hopkins faked
being hurt and rested awhile in the 10th so was a bit more competitive
but that was chickenshit behavior so I gave that round to Joe on
principle.

I'm surprised there's not more "even" rounds on peoples scorecards.
I know typically judges don't like them, or so we're told anyway, but you still see them more often than not in fan scorecards.
I personally think that a number of rounds were extremely close and "swing" rounds, as Kellerman put it. My one even round was probably being generous, even.
