Calaghe tried to make it a decent scrap but didn't land one single clean punch in my eyes. And Hopkins did nothing but hold even though he managed a first round knockdown. So i was just wondering, is this one of those fights where both fighters lose? Cause even though Calzaghe won, it was certainly not impressive as the Calzaghe nuthuggers thought it would be. And to me, I thought Hopkins coulda won this fight easily if he decided to mix it up a bit more, but either way, Congrats To Joe C on his win tonight...

Nah, I thought they both won. Sure the fight was ugly at times but
was nonetheless quite entertaining. Hopkins craftiness early in the
fight and Joe's amazing speed and reflexes combined to produce an
interesting back and forth battle IMO.

So do you mean a draw?

Clearly Cool

I think if Hopkins opened up more, he would have got hit more. That strategy he used gives him the best chance to win, but it still didn't work.

i had the exact same thought, but overall.. you could also argue, both won: hopkins won by dictating his style and delivering a nice performance at age 43 - calzaghe won by... still winning.

I kinda agree to where they both showed their strengths but I dont think either one of them went out there and really won the fight. Hopkins was great defensively in my eyes and I didn't see Calazghe land too many flush ones, but he just wasn't aggressive enough to win. It was more like one of those, "he didn't hurt me look at my face it's not bruised I must have won" fights from Hopkins more than I went out there and took it

No i gave it to Joe on agression alone, but he did not impress...but its not easy to on Hopkins defense.

Boring as crap fight. Hopkins fault.

Calzaghe 9-3 (with a knockdown)
90+27-1=116
Hopkins 3-9
30+81=111

Joe C 116-111

I think this will cement Hopkins as a legend, far more then Calzaghe who will be a beat hurt and questioned by this "victory"

I've only seen bits of the fight so far, but that was exactly the impression I got.

And in the interviews I thought Bernard sounded like HE KNEW HE LOST whereas Calzaghe seemed more RELIEVED to have won rather than knowing that he totally dominated like he normally does.

Joe knows that his powers are waning I think, and I'm not sure he'll fight Pavlik now.

He will go down in the hall of fame but not for this fight.....Joe won by 4 or so points and BHOP was his own worst enemy.

I agree, Calzaghe did nothing that impressed me at all. I take nothing away, he deserved the close decision due to activity, but I wouldn't have been surprised if BHop pulled it out. I just mean if Calzaghe was a 2 to 1 favorite as he was, I thought he'd impress a little more

I agree I've never been a fan of Joe and I have always been critical of his arrogance and cockiness given that in my mind he hasn't challenged himself enough in his career. He made a believer out of me after the Kessler fight though and I really thought he was going to lay a beating on Hopkins and even possibly stop him. But sadly I saw absolutely nothing to justify that prediction or my faith in him. He will have to earn it again by beating someone not named Roy Jones Jr.

Additionally, I have always been a huge Hopkins fan, which makes me less happy with Joe’s performance, cause it wasn't easy picking Hopkins to get owned. So I kinda now feel like Calzaghe made me look like an ass whole.

Hopkins on the other hand...I wasn't all that impressed by Hopkins lack of "effective" rough house tactics and I know he was trying to goat the ref into taking points but his act wasn't fooling anyone and I wasn't impressed. I kinda think in recent years Hopkins has fallen' in love with the whole "Hopkins the psychological warfare god" thing when he should just be pulling a glen Johnson and trying to fuck guys up with his physicality and power.

I will say though that Hopkins ability to preform on this level again at his age really impressed me.

Sadly, I agree wholly with your statement.

yeah I kinda got the impression that Joe spent the first four rounds wondering why he wasn't easily dominating this old guy with a name.

I didn't think he was taking the fight serious enough going into it.

The guy probably under estimated hopkins' abilities at this point in his career, as I did.

I think its funny though. Win lose or draw Hopkins always makes people question his opponents skills because he's so effective at making them look ordinary.

just look at his last few opponents:

Taylor was the air apparent and one of the most talented up and coming fighters in the game.....fights Hopkins, squeaks out two razor thin descisions and all of a sudden he's a fraud.

Antonio Tarver the light heaveywieght king, gets left speechless after getting brutally donminated.

Winky Wright p4p top 5, got beat even though he started as a 2-1 favourite or something.

Joe Calzaghe, p4p # 3 guy in boxing....made to look like shit. Imbarassed in the first round. And then made to look awkward while winning a clear descision.

Real boxing fans should see things for what they are now that the fight has happened. Fighting Hopkins is going to make you look bad and Joe did pretty good considering that win or lose hopkins has walked away with at least a moral victory from each of his last four fights against guys that were all top p4p fighters and were all supposed to woop his ass.

I thought it was a great effort by both. Hopkins frustrated the heck out of me but you gotta respect the old man for being able to confused joe that much. I had Hopkins winning early and knew Joe would win later on when hopkins tires out and he isnt as sharp. Not a great fight to see over again but one of those fights that was veyr exciting to watch first time live.
