View Full Version : Where has Calzaghe's power gone?

I have the DVD Calzaghe Super champion, showing his career highlights up until the Lacy fight. His power seems to have ebbed away. The last time he looked powerful in the DVD was agaisnt Byron Mitchell (after getting floored, JC got up in the same round to win the fight in a frantic tear up). But since that fight, he just doesn't sit on any of his punches any more. I still like Calzaghe, his win over Kessler was awesome if you ask me, and I'm glad he beat B-hop as well, but it seems to me he just doesn't put his whole body in his punches anymore.

If Calzaghe had the power he had only a few years back, he probably could've knocked Hopkins down.

Fragile hands mate, hes adapted his style to avoid injury innit, the lad could seriously bang once, agreed.

Main reasons are obviously fragile hands, and a different class of opponent against in which he has had to adapt his style

It still frustrates me though. The Calzaghe of old was much more exciting to watch. Was it his left hand he broke only once? Is it now permanatly weakened or something?

He's fighting better opponents, you can't just tee-off on the likes of Hops and Kessler.

That Calzaghe is still winning against top notch competition even as his powers and skills have diminished is testament to his ability and shrewd boxing brain.

So if he were to fight Mario Veit the walking punch bag once more, do you think we would see actual power shots coming from Calzaghe?

i miss the power but when you have hands that are weaker than egg shells you cant put that much behind a punch anymore.

id rather him use his brain and outbox someone than try to knock them out brake his hand and end up fighting with 1 hand again. the only time i think you are going to see that power off joe is if and only iff the fighter is swaing back and fro and the end is in sight.

Calzaghe was never a big puncher.

Even when he threw his best shots at Charles Brewer for 12 rounds, a guy who got knocked down for fun didn't move.

Moving up a weight I don't think helped, but frequently fighting lesser opponents has obviously made him look more powerful then he actually is also.

It was actually a 'slap' loaded up that would be his big punch, back in the day (I mean the 90s). He wasn't sitting on single shots that would knock guys 10 feet across the ring, literally just slapping across! Now he seems so so weak with his punches, and I don't get it.

I think Joe was pushing it a bit in the interview with Des, when he stated he could move up to Heavyweight and perhaps beat some of the lesser Heavies (not Wald). I really don't think he would have the power.

Well it isn't easy knocking out dirty, experienced, tough guys like Lacy, Bika, Kessler and Hopkins. He's still stunning and flooring them though.

Yeah but he's only fought once at LH, and he was never knocking hopkins out.
I think his ko record looks more impressive than it is, most of his stoppages are because of his handspeed, not power.

its a shame joes hands give him trouble as if he didn't i am convinced he would of got more recognition. but hats of to joe for adapting his fighting style as not many boxers do that in their careeers and be sucessful.

the best quote from enzo at the end of round 6 i think in the hopkins fight

"where the fuck is the power:huh , hello joe u there???:huh "

His record suggests who could wack but he admitted himself he has taken most of te power out of his left hand. Injuries have dogged him through out his career, at this late stage he cant afford to be injured all the time. He is definately not hitting as hard as he was when he first won the title.

its his hands and age mainly, he cant fight the same was a young clazaghe did, hes had to change and thats why he is a great champion due to his ability to adapt and fight differently

if you hurt him i think he will still walk you down throwing everything he got.

He could have problems against RJ. If he can't get the current version of Jones out of there, Jones' sharper shooting - albeit lower work rate - could make it close on the cards.
