As the question says,or would you want a current young gun to shut up the doubters?
I've been convinced for a long time, he doesn't need to do anything
Obviously it would be preferable he fights Pavlik/Dawson to Roy Jones, but oh well...

Beating young guns doesn't shut up the doubters, it just convinces the doubters that the young gun that they were sure would ko Calzaghe is actually an overrated hypejob that never had a chance.

I'm not a doubter but come on. Calzaghe needs to show us all that he can win against a young prime fighter when the refs are "against" him, the audience is booing him etc. etc.. Pavlik at home is no bad deal.;)

Yeah, Calzaghe has never dealt with a hostile crowd....:-(

Pavlik is the only name that would come close to convincing Calzaghe's doubters.
So many fans love Pavlik far too much to just shit on him if Calzaghe beats him.

Joes resume will always be questioned, becasue he never fought the big names in there prime. Unless Lacy or Kessler go on to do great things, or Pavlik if he fights him.

Yes! But both Kessler and Lacy were in his own backyard. It would be really nice to see Calzaghe close that gap in his resume. I would love to see if he can pull it off away from home. If the BHOP was any indication he should be able to do it.

can i ask why does he have to do this,it's very very rare and american fighter has ever had to ... joe calzaghe fought in england against robin reid and was definatly not the favorite in that fight, the crowd was very anti joe c.

o and calzaghe doesnt have to fight in anyone's backyard apart from his own,he's the champ while all others around him now are challengers.

Now that he has a "W" over Bernard Hopkins his legacy is sealed...even if Bhop was 43. It's not a spectacular resume but it's solid.....on top of that he has a record # of title defenses and has been unbeaten since he started his pro career....it's not that bad. His best win was against Bhop which is only one of 3 truly meaningful fights that Joe had in his long career.

A Pavlik and a Dawson/Tarver would really round it off. Best case scenario, while being realistic, is probably just Pavlik.

I believe your point about American boxers is valid. But isn't it true that most credit given to the American boxers come from the Americans themselves?

Who was the champ against Kessler?
calzaghe was the recognised supermw champ and the bigger draw.

See "Lacy" and "Kessler"...
But seriously, if he beats Jones - his legacy/resume is pretty damn sweet. He doesn't "need" to beat anybody else. Of course if Dawson and Tarver fight and Joe beats the winner of that one - he would erase ALL doubters and retire at #1 pound for pound.

It's not great but it is good. Having watched him a few times now I can see he is a hell of a fighter.
I don't have a problem with him going after a big money fight and retiring..RJJ.
I wish he would have done more early in his career though
He has plenty of to contenders on his record oither than Lacy and Kessler. Now he has Hopkins name and title i think his resume has been fulfilled.
He wont quit though, he has 2 more wins atleast in him yet.
There will always be doubters, give it five years after his retirement, respect for Joe Calzaghe will be universal!

april 2008
yep he has stepped up to the plate
3 wins in what were perceived as basically 50/50 fights in 3 years v 3 fighters with totally different styles means calzaghe cemented his legacy and was as good as his fans beleived .

excactly...if fighters listened to boxing "fans" they they'd all end up fighting till 50 with brain damage.
To put it in perspective, there are people who STILL think Ali was an overrated bum.

Hey Shawn, please excuse the sycophantic nature of this post, but I respect your views more than most on here.
Do you feel that Joe won the fight and how do you think he performed?

He doesn't have to fight anyone else. His resume is complete. Few fighters achieve that.

i scored it by 2 points to calzaghe.
calzaghe took away the hopkins jab and after round 3 it was calzaghe that made the fight and
hopkins went more into his shell very uncomfertable with all the pressing and not giving hopkins time to set his traps .
i beleive calzaghe boxed an undiciplined, poor fight and could have made it much easier for himself, but then again calzaghe right the way through his career has always boxed poorly v spoilers not giving himself the room and controlling them first with jab/foot movement /staying away.
insterad as usual he got to close and allowed the grappling /spoiling to take place.
he always gets the win v these type of fighters on workrate and will to win and mental toughness, but because his own style is unorthodox it makes him look ugly doing so.
put calzaghe in with a come forward fighter like johnson, or stand up tall , no head movement like tarver and calzaghe will shine and he always has.
but i said before the fight took place i would be happy with any kind of win from this fight and u am happy he got the win.
a win is a win.

kessler has fought the best of his division: mundine, beyer, calzaghe. What are you talking about?

If he beat someone like Dawson followed by an Erdei-calibre opponent, I would call him an ATG.
Until then, I won't.

After Glen Johnson beat the crap out of Dawson, Dawson does not look so good anymore.
