View Full Version : Best San Antonio Fighter of All Time ?
Liston3

Texas is a big boxing state and San Antonio is one of its biggest boxing cities who is the best SA TOWN fighter ?
Robert Quiroga 21-2 Flyweight Title Holder 5 Title defenses. Was in fight of the year Vs Kid Akeem.
James Leija- 47-7-1 Beat Hall of Famer Azumah Nelson twice, Beat Titlist Troy Dorsey and Olympic Gold Medalist Steve McCroey.
John Michael Johnson- 30-9-1 WBA Bantamweight titlist and IBF Super Bantamweight Challenger, beat future Hall of Famer and one of my favorite fighters in Junior Jones.
Tony Ayala Jr. - Could've been not only the best San Antonio fighter of all time, but also one of the greatest p4p, if he didnt waste his talent and go to prison. He could've been great, but made a dumb and horrible mistake.

Easily "Jesse" James Leija, he's my favorite fighter. In his prime he was fast and had an excellent jab

Leija had much better management and promotion, especially early in his career, but Quiroga coudn't have done anymore than he did and I believe showed a lot of class retiring when he did rather than hang on for a few paydays. His tragic death still shocking now two years later...

That was very sad. Every year they have a motorcycle race in his memory on the southside. I tend to think Leija was a bit overrated, although still a good fighter, because some of his losses in big fights, although he still managed good wins (Ward, Robinson, Nelson, and many others)

Jessie James, IMO. It's hard to say what would have happened with Ayala. He certainly seemed to have a lot of promise, but he didn't have much in the way of wins over big names before he went to jail.
You should have left that last option off, brother.

Probably should have had Mike Ayala instead of Tony. He came within a hair of beating Danny "Little Red" Lopez.

I met Quiroga and Leija. . . both seem like nice guys. I saw Ayala at a bar a couple times but didnt really want to meet him for fear of being fondled.
My vote goes to Quiroga.

tony was probably the one with the most natural talent. he was really brutal and would sometimes spit on opponents after he knocked them out. my former inlaw was compadres with mike so i followed many of their fights. i used to hang out with flaco(john michael johnson) when we were in high school and i remember being amazed at how hard this skinny kid barely over 100lb could hit. i think flaco could have gone a lot further if it were not for some bad decisions he made outside the ring. pikin was probably the one with the biggest heart and was dead game. never met him personally but i loved to watch him fight. the smartest of the lot was probably james who accomplished the most, with what he had, inside and outside the ring. im hoping raul will surpass all these other guys for the good of sa boxing. oh, i also live across the street from gabriel elizondo( a good boxer from sa, in case youve never heard of him)

thats tight living across the street from Gabriel Elizondo, he has a future in boxing I thought he couldve got the nod against Navarro and was there when he fought Mendoza he's pretty good, but ya i put my vote for raul surpassing all of the others i think he has way to much talent not to be a champion. About year ago i remember them trying to set up a fight between Elizondo and Martinez, if im right Elizondo is a little bigger then Raul, but would still pick Martinez to win

Ya that was pretty amazing, I know an old fighter that was friends with Tony and trained with him named Santo Randazzo. He said Tony's sparring destruction of Cuevas was one of the most shocking and amazing moments he had seen in boxing

It's between Leija and El Torito. Leija had the better career, but Ayala had more talent. If it wasn't for his serious personal flaws, he could have been an ATG.

Props to everyone in the SA, i agree with zacman. but this is another era. Cobrita is the best, currently in The Tone City. Leija disapointed me when he said he did not want to come out when they ruptured his ear, but is was towards the end of his career.
