BILOXI--The immediate headline should be handspeed beats Hanshaw. But minutes after his unanimouis decision victory over previously undefeated Anthony Hanshaw at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. dropped a bombshell, a big bombshell.
The former world heavyweight champion, who at age 38 showed tremendously fast hands and combinations against a willing and gutsy foe nearly a decade younger, indicated that he might want to reclaim a heavyweight title.
Yes, Roy Jones Jr. uttered the K word. As in Klitschko, as in Wladimir Klitschko.
"I will fight anybody out there," Jones said after 9,000 adoring fans and a PPV TV audience watched him sometimes turn back the clock to the era when he was, for sure, boxing's best pound for pound fighter.
Jones was effusive in his praise for the always game Hanshaw who started strong and was aggressive, if not always effective in eanrly all 12 rounds. Jones labeled the Ohio fight a future world champion.
"I might fight Klitschko," Jones said.
Later, at his after party at the host IP Casino-Resort-Spa, I told Jones he had dropped a Big K Bomb that.
"I know it," RJJ said.
And he smiled.
Make no mistake, though, Jones is no punched ticket. Now 51-4, there will be more victories before Roy Jones packs it in. He may be 38-year-old but those blazing hands don't know it.
