You've really taken the fun out of trying to come up with some names ourselves, haven't you!

My top five:

1 - Burley. By a mile. At his peak i bet he could beat almost any champion between light-welter and super-middle to secure himself a title.

2 - Sam Langford....ok, I may have been exaggerating when I said "by a mile". I am really getting into this guy, what a great fighter.

3 - Harry Wills. I have a real soft spot for this guy. I feel bad for him. He may not be "better" p4p than many other denied champs but he's one of the ones I hurt for the most. He deserved a shot.

4 - Lloyd Marshall. The ultimate business fighter? Maybe, but I bet his raw talent would be enough to put any super-middle/light-heavy there's ever been to the test.

5 - I'd like to say Jack Chase, but probably Holman Williams was the better fighter. That would be my guess anyway. So Holman Williams.

This is an awsome list. Wouldn't you say that Jerry Quarry could be added to that list though? I mean I don't think he was as good as Langford or Jackson, but he did manage to beat Floyd patterson, Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Buster Mathis, Thad Spencer, and Mac Foster. That's a pretty thick list of good fighters for a guy who never won a world title.

Jeff Clark, Bobby Dobbs and Joe Butler should be on the list.

I would also add Tommy West. He was extremely unlucky to come along while Joe Walcott, Billy Smith and Tommy Ryan were in the welterweight division.

Billy Miske deserves a mention as he should have contested the light heavyweight title early in his career.

Not a bad fighter, but I'd say he's a level below most of the guys listed here. He was usually outclassed quite badly when stepping up against the very best but he did have some quality wins as you say. I'm not an expert on heavies though, so I can't give too informed an opinion.

Billy Miske had some tough fights with Greb. The Harry Greb website credits Miske in winning a newspaper decision over Greb once. He also beat light-heavy champs like Jack Dillon and Levinsky

and IMO Tommy Hearns (if memory serves me) never won a consensus undisputed championship, so he'd have to be up there...
