View Full Version : Tyson's "bald patch" - ever explained?

Does anyone remember that bald patch that Tyson developed sometime around '87? I often used to wonder what that was all about, and if anyone ever came up with a solid explanation for it? It went away after a while, but I've always been curious about it.
Some argue that it was a side effect of steroid use, but I'm not sure that roids causes hair to fall out. :huh

I think he had a lousy barber who cut his hair before the Thomas, Tucker & Biggs fights.

It was shaven in to distract opponents. Then he realised he looked like a right tit so he grew it back.

It was was caused by the stress of being so young and such a huge star in less than couple of years. Its mentioned in a few biographies of him.

Steroids can cause hair loss, although this varies from person to person.

Steroid tests can easily be bypassed.

Easily.
Ever been to a smoke shop with purging liquids/systems?
You don't think anyone who's ever used steroids has had to fill out a job application and get tested?
Tyson was put on a steroid cycle by an expert when he was just a kid, anyway.

And then of course there's 'roid rage. I believe this added to Tyson's outbursts. Seems obvious.

Okay, I don't know if anyone will believe this, but I swear I remember reading about it at the time...
Apparently there was a very good racehorse at the time with a diamond-shaped spot on his forehead. In tribute, for inspiration, or for whatever reason (who really knows?), Tyson shaved a diamond into his head.

except that he was 200 pounds when he was 15. His trainer was also rediculously old school.
For the first time in my life I agree with a post of yours. He was 12 years old and already 190 pounds of solid muscle. Tyson was a freak -steriods my ass. AT 12?!
I always suspected that the bald patch was a product of his anxiety. There are a few people I know who have this disorder -it's called "Trichotillomania" and it involves pulling out your hair from the scalp area, eyebrows, pubic area... it's a byproduct of depression, OCD, as well as anxiety.

I think a lot of Holyfield fans try to taint Tyson with the same brush lest they chance losing a bit of ground.

I'm a massive Tyson fan and I will tell you there is a 95% chance post-prison Tyson was roiding, pre-prison Tyson is a different matter
Post prison Tyson worked with steroid guru Chad Nichols
In his move up to HW Holyfield worked with Fred Hattfield (AKA Dr Squat the 1000lb squating legend), Lee Hanney and a few others that were reknowned for steroid knowledge

Steroids can cause pattern baldness. That being the classical baldness beginning near the temples or on the crown. Mike's looked more like ringworm or some other fungus.

Could be an abrasion. I still have a bald patch from diving into a pool and scraping my head on the bottom. Lucky I didn't break my neck.
Thanks for letting me know I have an adult onset of this "Trichotillomania". Another disorder!!!! Great....I don't pull out the hair, but play with my bald spot. Probably stress related, 3 kids, putting food on the table, etc.

I doubt Tyson was taking steroids in those days.
After he lost, and esp. after prison, yes, at some point I suspect he would've used steroids.
I've always been intrigued by his physique in his first fight after prison (v. Peter McNeeley). Never seen him look quite like that, before or after.

I agree.. although Tyson actually lost inches on his neck after prison. He was built more like a juggernaut boxer type than a body builder when he was 21. Boxer's muscles are functional -which is why I always thought Bruce Seldon and Frank Bruno's builds were for the birds. Which was what they were. Birds.
Hagler -now that is a fighter's build.

Alopecia.
Good call. This is the most likely explanation in my mind.
It's an autoimmune condition that causes one or more patches of baldness, and typically lasts six months to a year before resolving itself.
I actually had apolecia areata myself, fortunately for me it was just a stripe on the right hand side of my scalp which everyone thought I had clippered to be cool. Exclamation hairs began to regrow after about 3 months if I'm not mistaken.
It's not too rare a condition from my knowledge, and almost always resolves itself rather than worsening. Can be caused by numerous different factors.
But, yes, steroids can cause balding. Although as I think someone pointed out, it's the irreversible kind.
I don't think preprison Tyson juiced, based on the factors stonehands pointed out, i.e., his freakish physical traits at a young age. Not out of the realm of possibility, but his temporary baldness does very little for bolstering the argument.
