I don't twist punches either, my jab is usually with a horizontal fist (palm down). If you want to work cuts I think it's more efficient to make your fist come in at an angle than to twist it. An uppercut or an upwards jab to the eye area is more likely to cut than a punch coming in at a 90 degree angle.

Because a boxing glove is not square. A vertical fist may penetrate a small hole in your opponents defense that a horizontal fist would not. I feel very akward doing it though.

I remember Teddy Atlas saying that Hector Camacho used this kind of jab during his prime. So it must be pretty effective.

Its all depends down to prefrences..Personally theres no disadvantages with twisting the jab while it has a number of advantages. The twist brings your shoulder up providing cover for your chin. The twist also helps your punch follow the powerline making for a solid jab. The twist is not used to cut your opponent as you should be twisting before landing the punch..You can twist your wrist to cut a opponent after landing the punch but this is not adviable in amateur boxing...

when throwing a jab to tear the skin. do you land it vertically and then twist it to horizontal on contact? and is that only with a jab or a cross 2?

you are speaking bollox you cant cut some1 just by twisting your punch you twist you punch to open up an area which has already been cut to make it bleed more..you cant do this in amateaurs because of headgear so dont concentrate on this try working on snapping the jad or something...
