View Full Version : At this point in his career, DLH's power is overrated

I know I may be in the minority on this one fellas, but I just dont think DLH is the same big puncher he once was. Outside of his left hook, he really doesnt have much in his punches. He throws great combinations, but they dont seem to have much pop behind them. They are more like weak flurries than powerful combos.
A lot of people are giving Forbes a lot of credit here. Granted, he did go the distance with DLH. However, I saw DLh catch him with quite a few flush left hooks and he didnt blink. I refuse to believe that Forbes chin can withstand a younger DLH's left hook. This just makes me feel that DLH doesnt have that same pop he once had.
Some people here believe that DLh is physically stronger and punches harder than Cotto. i would have to strongly disagree. Cotto is very heavy handed and each of his punches (not just his left hook) is very damaging.
I do think DLH looked good tonight as far as his stamina is concerned. but outside of that, i was extremely disappointed that he could not finish a former junior lightweight/contender star. I almost 100% positive that Floyd would have greatly embarrased him, Cotto and maybe Margarito would have annihilated him.
Again, maybe it's just me, but I just dont think DLH is far from the fighter he once was. His power has greatly deteriorated. both Floyd and Cotto would handle him. While he has a chin of steel, I think Cotto could stop him to the body.

I agree with most of your points, but I'd write off the critique of Oscar's power to the resilience of Forbes' chin and the nature of this fight. This was a high level sparring session meant to test Oscar's stamina, and how well he could land against a slick boxer. A KO wasn't the ultimate goal tonight. It was to fight at a steady pace for 12 rounds and take the KO if it came naturally.
I wasn't impressed at all by Oscar's work downstairs, which looked more and more toothless as the fight progressed. But his jab and left hook still looked dangerous as hell.

we're not talking about a middleweight who hasnt been dropped before. We're talking about a former junior lightweight who was a best probably a B+ / A- fighter. Oscar is a certified ATG who should dispose of challenges like this easily. Oscar destroyed Vargas who is 10x the fighter Forbes ever was or ever could be.
Perhaps oscar was just trying to get in some rounds to see how he would box against a slick fighter. But I still say that if his goal was indeed to KO this guy, like he wanted to, then he should be greatly disappointed b/c Forbes is a C class fighter.

Same ol' tired boring ass knit picking.

Dude, Forbes has a good chin, plus a good defense as well.

Cotto would have destroyed Forbes. Nobody is knitpicking here, only speaking the truth. Any of the top WW wouldve stopped Forbes.
DLH is overrated, period. The Mayweather fight is a joke and anybody that still thinks DLH is an elite fighter is nuts.
It was annoying listening to the HBO team hyping DLH up tonight like he was putting on some kind of great comeback performance.

DLH overrated?????
This from the man with Povetkin as his avatar???:yikes :yikes :yikes :yikes :yikes What does Povetkin have to do with this? Am I calling him an ATG or something? I believe he will clean out this weak HW division and I like the guy. That's it.
DLH's not extremely overrated like someone like Margarito is, but he's overrated by some fans and all of the boxing media. He clearly isn't an elite fighter anymore.

I was at the fight tonight as I got complimentary tickets from a cell phone company......
....I was curious and spoke to several people in my seating area which was just above the floor level......alot of the people I spoke too got complimentary tickets as well.
Apparently the cheapest seats which were high up and sold for 25 bucks, sold out.
.....but there were thousands of seats that were middle priced (above 60 bucks)given away as complimentary, by different companies, as GBP had come to the conclusion sometime within the past week or so that it was'nt going to sell out....
In any regards, GBP wanted the arena filled to capacity and gave away thousands of tickets, sign that DLH without a bonafide dance partner may be losing some of his appeal.
I think there is a reason why DLH did'nt make this a PPV card, he would have been embarrassed by the results!

No. Power is the last thing to go in a boxer. I just knew before that its hard for anybody to ko Forbes.

I say De La Hoya's Punching Power is still pretty good considering he made his pro debut @ Junior lightweight (Where he was a beast)
and is still fighting and very relevent and fighting at 150 and as high as Middleweight.
Oscar's run is a moden day H. Armstrong

I dont think it has anything to do with Oscar losing his power, it has more to do with Forbes being hard to hit flush. Personally, I wasnt too bothered that he didnt KO forbes, I saw this fight for what it was, a tune-up opportunity to get Oscar as sharp as possible for the Flooyd rematch.

Vargas was not 10x the fighter Forbes is.
Forbes is a tough nut to crack.

well the commentators on tv said that this was a way of DLH saying thanks to his fans so the ticket prices were low. I believe they interviewed hoya about this event and it was just like a give away to the fans..

We are just looking at an aging fighter who is now pacing himself a lot more to make sure he does not fell into the same traps that the past has held.
Last night, De La Hoya, for such an inactive fighter, fought a very smart fight, mixing pressure with technically excellent boxing.

Was Jim Lampley in orgasmic pleasure as he said it?
Lets get real here, except for the high priced Ringside seats in which alot were given away complimentary to celebrities.....(DLH wants to give back to the fans, yet its the celebrities who can afford any seat, that get to sit ringside.:nut )
Listen up and use your common sense here..... the cheapest seats which were $25 sold out rather quickly....
You would thinkg that if the intentions of GBP's was to actually give away complimentary seating, the cheapest seats would have been the ones to give out.....
......as it was, it was the $75 to $300 seating that were going to have pockets of emptiness......and so in order to make DLH look like he could fill a soccer stadium and make him look good on HBO, GBP had no choice but to make deals with companies like At&t so that they could distribute these tickets on a complimentary basis to customers that were buying cell phones!
GBP's was actually in a pickle. There is a tennis stadium that adjoins the Home Depot Soccer stadium. The tennis stadium sits less than 10,000 which would probably have been too little seating for a DLH fight.
The Tennis stadium is where the Raphael Marquez-Israel Vazquez fight took place......its a wonderful place to watch a boxing match from, the seating is angled beautifully for such an event.
......but lets be real, DLH is a greedy individual, and with a chance that they could sell well above 10,000 seats, he could'nt resist the urge but to do it in the Soccer Stadium that sits above 30,000.
.....thats fine, more power to him, but the picture that Jim Lampley and HBO painted that DLH could sell out a 30,000 seat stadium, is just not true.
As I said, thousands of complimentary tickets were given away when the realization set in that the stadium was going to fall well short from a sellout!
The cheap seat sold out, but they just could'nt sell out the middle priced seating, which btw were lousy to view a boxing match in comparison to the tennis stadium seating where every seat in that place is a good seat to watch boxing!
You take anything complimentary that HBO has to say about DLH toward the fans, with a grain of salt, as naturally with the relationship that DLH has with HBO, they naturally will do and say anything to make DLH look good.
....and I think most people in boxing forums like this, know very well of HBO's lust for DLH!

How's he overrated? He's not in anyone's top ten rankings? He has no current championships to speak of. The guys running on his legacy at this point. Though he is not anyone's favorite coming into a fight against top opponents he is still a very dangerous fighter that could upset the apple cart against anyone.

Just because Forbes showed balls of steel in that fight doesn't mean Oscar lost power. There was one left hook at the end of a round (have to watch it second time to remember which one) which buckled Forbes legs wildly but he didn't go down. That was pure will that kept him up. A couple of times Oscar let the fish go after catching it against the ropes.

Oscar's carreer actually does begin before Tito. And you're forgetting Castillejo, Sturm, Vargas, Mayorga which he won. If you're not gonna count Sturm than you have to give him Mosley second time and Tito.

I dont see why so many people are making such a big deal of Forbes lasting the whole fight. If you looked at the betting odds, the money was on Forbes not getting stopped. The way people are talking now about Forbes, he should be able to clean up the whole 140 pound division for lasting the distance with Oscar.

I give Forbes credit for taking the shots well.
DLH can still crack. He may not be a Jackson or Hears, but he still has some power, mainly with the left hook. Some guys you still can't get out of there.
DLH in his younger days hit Molina and Gonzalez with bombs and they lasted the distance.
