Thanks Kirk. Lately I've been watching a lot of the old welterwieght fights from the late 90s (great time for boxing). Vargas' win over Ike Quartey was extremely impressive. He might not have ever became an all time great but the Vargas that beat Quartey that night was a great fighter. He was probably a little too "Ferocious" for his own good but his bravary in the ring has to be admired.

Vargas was a beast back in the day...
It's sad the only thing he would fight for now is the last slice...

ay yai yai... i still cant believe that he looked like that.
O_money... i hear ya man, hes my all time fav for just that 'ferocious' reason... and vargas vs ike is the height of his career for me as far as in ring performance.

We often bitch about fighters being brought along too slowly...but here's an example of what happens when a fighter is shot up too quickly. He just wasn't ready for a Tito Trinidad style fighter despite how talented and how vicious he (being Vargas) could be in the ring. Gotta give Vargas credit, he was game for any fight and took on whomever he could.
Would've been nice to see how good Vargas could've been had he not discovered Burger King.

Didn't he gain that weight for Alpha Dog?

He had that back problem, and other health problems.
Don't blame him for putting on the weight-- having to cut and rehydrate destroys boxers metabolism. Look at Roberto Duran-- its not a lack of discipline so much as his body has been like an elastic rubber band with a constantly fluctuating weight-- it snaps at the end of the career and never goes down.

He gained that much weight and more between every fight he ever had.
Trust me, I'm from Oxnard, Vargas had great potential but he lacked dicipline.
Granted when he fought he always put on a show..
but his weight gain inbetween fights is what shortened his boxing.

Great video. I usually don't like highlight videos cuz they don't pick up on any of the drama. This one did.
Also, never seen Vargas' entrance into that fight with Trinidad. That was pretty cool but Vargas looked surprised when he came out that the Aztec guys had fire shooting up into the air. He stopped and looked at them like "WTF?"
