so ottke got 40,000,000 tv audience a year.

that is huge numbers by todays standards.

its the equivelent of 40 mayweather v hatton fights in terms of exposure to an american market.

Firstly, he was a runner and secondly there are examples of gross bias from the referees at times in his career, Reid v Ottke being the prime example where there ref just ignored the fact that Reid had knocked Ottke down and actually deducted points from Reid for having the audacity to hit Ottke during a boxing match, constantly breaking up the fight when Reid landed a good shot - so how exactly was he going to KO him? Sometimes the odds are stacked too heavily in your opponents favour.

I think Ottke gets a bad reputation because of the Reid debacle more than anything.

Good point. Ottke deserves his share of citicism, but none of his fights were as much a robbery as Lewis - Holyfield, yet nobody accuses Evander like they accuse Ottke. Looking to the ref for help stinks, but is a lesser crime IMO than headbutting and elbowing your opponent, risking his health, like some widely admired fighters do. Ottke was a good amateur who got into the pros very late, he had some skills and was very much protected, but he wasn't everything that is bad about boxing.
