pecker-style? I guess not...just the usual way, lowering your chest until it touches the floor and then straightening your arms just short of elbows locking, face facing forward, back and legs straight in a line, arms slightly more than shoulder-width apart, palms on the floor, fingers pointing to the front, toes touching the floor.

75+ is good; I didn't mean to be rude; I can only do 40 myself...but 100 is what I consider enough for one to be called fit.

However, after doing serious weights, I can only do about 50 straight. 150 is without prior intensive workout, which sometimes I'll do it as a warm up to weights.

Let us use Amsterdam - the gold standard - as an example! He does 40 pull-ups and 150 push-ups. That is a ratio of 4/15.
So if you do 25 pull-ups, which you should be able to do if you're fit, you should be able to do around 94 push-ups.
In my book that says you have to do 25 pull-ups and 100 push-ups to be considered fit, rounded up niceley.

Dude, what are you on about? Most of the regular Armed Forces in the US, just in Basic Training, only require about 50 or so in order to graduate. And besides the Marine Corps, they don't require any pull ups, althgough you do it in PT. And note: the Marines, in my experience, do pull ups with your palms facing in, not out.
I voted 70+ just because thats how many i did last time i can remember. But I am wondering how long are you aloud to rest in pushup position if you are aloud to rest at all?

I would say I completely agree with you, but there's no school record for push-ups, and due to my limitations in other areas, I'd like to try to get my name under the pull-up record.
Doesn't mean I can't work on both, though.

I'm trying to remembe the Marines commercial on TV, but my memory is failing me. YouTube time. I'll be back..
I think he was just saying the ratio between the two is a little off. I feel like 50 is pretty low compared to the 20 pullups I can do.
Didn't find the one I was looking for, but here's a screen cap from a newer commericial.

Kolya, mate, those are not pull-ups; they are chin-ups and they are much easier! Try it yourself! (You use your biceps much more). 50 push-ups?? That's for unfit pussies that don't exercise regularly, like me!:-(

I highly doubt some of you are using proper technique when you are quoting figures of 100+. Remember rounding of the back is bad technique. Ive never really tested how much proper ones i could do in one go, as i do mines in supersets with other excercies and in circuits at the gym. If i hazard a guess based on what i feel in circuits et al, i'll say 70, nearing the end would be a struggle.
Also, the lighter you are, the easier to do push ups. Someone of 130pounds i presume could do more push ups in one go than someone like me of 190lbs, it in no way means you are 'fitter' as decebal says.
You want to measure true fitness, do the bleep test coupled with 5 minute run, sets of deadlift etc

All I am saying is that the fitter you are, the more push-ups you can do, whatever your build or size. I am also saying that I think a truly fit guy in his prime should be able to do 100. That's all. Amsterdam, for example (a truly fit guy) CAN! I have mates who can...and they are NOT 150 pounds, or whatever...they are just very FIT!

Dude, I'm an actively competing amateur boxer, and I've been in the military for a time, and I don't do 100 push ups straight. If I was fresh and really pressed it out I could do maybe 60-65 push ups. But yet, I can compete and fight 4 rounds in amateur fights anmd I hit hard enough to keep people off me. Yet according to you, I'm not really fit. Maybe it's just I don't specialize in doing push ups. If you really practice it then yeah, anyone can build up to a lot of push ups. But it's not an indicator of fitness, just that you're good at push ups and the muscles involved in it are good at them.

I think you are exaggerating now. This thread, although posted in the training/amateour boxing section is more likely to appeal to non-boxers like myself. If you are a boxer, I would have thought you would not have taken it that seriously...Let's leave it at that, shall we. I take on board the obvious point that there are different kinds of fitness.

Decebal, I think you're a good poster and all, so don't get my previous posts wrong. I just think what you were saying is a bit odd. Like you said, there are many kinds of fitness. My coach was in the Army for years and can bang out push ups and pull ups like crazy, one handed push ups, all that. But he's dead tired after sparring with Amy. Obviously, he's not fit, but it doesn't stop him from being able to push like crazy.

You are right. My naive posts on this manner have proven my lack of expertise. Now that I have heard from some people who know what they're talking about, I have changed my mind. Thank you.
So, would I be right in thinking that if you practice push-ups regularly (daily?) and that is how you principally measure your fitness, you should be pretty fit if you can do 100? i.e. could a strong but not so fit body-builder do 100?:think

Well, push ups and pull ups are all an assertion of your strength to weight ratio. You walk around everyday and dont think much about your legs actually lifting your own weight. Go to space for a month and come back to gravity, the atrophy will be prominent enough to change your perception. Not that I've been there.
