well, Italian AMericans aren't.
Rocky Marciano. Rocky Graziano.
Lake Lamotta could punch when he was mad, but he had fragile hadns, and, much as Joe Calzahge has his slaps, Lamotta would only punch to the body.
Come to think of it, Calzaghe is Italian by decent too.

Sandro Mazinghi,Nino Benvenuti,Bruno Arcari..Vito Antufermo....all could hit well enough ...Europeon style generally does a lot of arm punching...but I beg to differ....Italian Americans Marciano,Graziano,Lamotta,Basilio,...hit hard...Wille Pep...Canzonari, Ambers,Sammy Mandell,Johnny Dundee...were boxers but could punch

So who is the last native born Italian to have been a real KO artist? The fact that people are having to go back to the 50s, 60s and 70s to find even respectable punchers says it all.

Vincenzo Cantatore: 27 ko's in 33 wins. He was at one point 26-2 with 25 ko's. Pure slugger, can't do much else.
The Italian fighters havent enjoyed that much success in the course of the last couple of years.
I cant name a single Italian who really has the potential to win a world title and defend it 2 or 3 times.
Giacobe Fragomeni will face Czech olympic silver medalist Rudolf Kraj for the vacant WBC's cruiser weight title after Haye has relinquished it.
The Italian brawler will be the huge underdog against the more gifted Kraj in his upcomming world title shot.
Well, lets hope that Italian amateur heavy Camarelle will turn pro! He could be a mighty force in the paid ranks, too.
There are some other good Italian amateurs out there who could make some noise at the pros as well.

thank you!
why do people keep mentioned american fighters of italian descent. They never learned their trade in Italy so they are not Italian fighters
The likes of Loi and Benvenuti were virtual non-punchers
ps. whoever said Cantatore, was a good shout :good
PPS Wasnt the uber-hitting Lausse Argentinian or am I being an idiot :huh

Benvenuti Ko'd solid chin Luis Rodriguez, dropped Emile Griffith 2 times in 2 different fights and stopped Sandro Mazzinghi who had some good Ko's over solid opponents...as for today the cruiser division has a couple of punchers and in the amatuer ranks the Super Heavys and the Heavys have Cammeralle and Russo who have good power....where did this post come from

My take - seems like it is more a Western European style of fighting
than a genetic trait. The Italians seem to prefer to box rather than
throw hard.
As other posters have stated, Italian-Americans - Marciano, Graziano,
Steve Belloise, Frankie DePaula, etc. can punch as can the Italians from South America like Bonavena, Firpo.
Seems like a training mentality.

It seems the way they train them in Italy makes them fight in style not suited for putting power into shots. Some change as they progress, in fact if they don't change they don't usually progress to world titles. I'm of Italian ancestry, but live in United States. I look up fighters from Italy on occasion, and am always dissapointed in low ko percentages. I wonder how some would do if they came to America while amateur, or when just starting carreers.

Nonetheless look at Paulie Malignaggi. An American who boxes and punches in a similarly poncey style to Silvio Branco.

his parents were first generation italian immigrants. making him no different bloodwise.
Italian Immigrants had it tough in the USA early on, which is one reason why many became fighters.
Life in Italy is rather easy, and lazy compared to the USA. It is about leisure time, good food, women, and mother's taking care of their son's until they marry. Not exactly an environment to produce hard as nails fighters.
Italian heavy Vidoz could punch a but, and #1 amateur super heavy in the world Roberto Cammerrelle can punch a lot.

The polotically correct, leftists that run Italy have made it illegal for a boxer to hit his opponent hard. They do not want to offend anyone's sensibilities.
Berlusconi is right-wing.
Now go home and get your shinebox.

Good point. It isn't exactly a hard-hitting culture.

Yeah, I was gonna point him out. Your last sentence is very accurate. He gave Johnny Nelson a good fight at the end but losing the first 8 rounds never helps.

helps when you score a knockdown at the round is made a minute longer!

There were many good Italian punchers (not only the famous Italian Americans like Graziano, Marciano, etc.), never heard of the names like Mazzinghi, Mattioli (52 KOīs in his 65 wins), Arcari ( one of the best bodypunchers ever), DePiccoli, etc.? Right now, there simply arenīt some, because Italian boxing sucks in the moment, but there are amateurs who have a future if they want (with big power, guys like Valentino, Cammarelle, etc.).Thread creator, make your homework before you post such a shit, and if an Italian fucked your wife or anything similar to that, than itīs not our problem here on ESB, itīs a boxing forum.

Good example. In his prime, he was very slow, without any skills, but he had nasty one-punch-power.

Hi Luigi,
Do you have any info on VALENTINO? Is he a heavyweight?
Also, any info on Cammarelle is appreciated. Do you know
where I can find Cammarelle's amateur record?

Hi,
Valentino is a very young Lightweight with massive and explosive power. Cammarelle´s amateur record is here:
[Only registered and activated users can see links] , than go on the right side at "record" at "dilettanti", than it comes a search machine from all Italian amateur boxers, than go at "cognome e nome" and write Cammarelle, than you see all his reported fights and results... ;-)

Italia will have two good heavyweights after olimpic this year. Clemento Russo and Roberto Cammarelle will give alot of credit to the Europian heavyweight. Nice to see them in some good teams. It will be good one to sign in the Universum and another to Saurland.

Diferents of them in the amateur and who can do better in the profi ?
