View Full Version : IF Arthur beats Gogoladze, he wants a rematch with GOMEZ

ALEX ARTHUR confessed yesterday that, with 72 hours to go until his crunch WBO Interim title clash with Georgia's Koba Gogoladze in Cardiff, he is using his only pro ring conqueror, Mancunian Michael Gomez, to psych himself up to win on Saturday.
Arthur said: "My wife Debbie and my three bairns have all moved out of the family home to let me concentrate mentally on ensuring that I beat Gogoladze and bring the belt back to Edinburgh on Sunday.

"But winning world titles is all about motivation and, while my family remain paramount, I've been thinking that, once I win on Saturday, I'd want to make two title defences by the end of 2007.
"As my only ring conqueror Michael Gomez has said he'd love to fight me again, one of these defences might be against him at Edinburgh Castle. Fans would turn out in droves for such a fight, given that my fight against Gomez was voted British fight of the year in 2003 when Michael stopped me at Meadowbank.
"But it won't ever happen if I slip up on Saturday against Gogoladze so this is firing me up even more to beat him. Of course, if Joan Guzman doesn't relinquish the full WBO title then he must fight me within 90 days but that would still leave plenty of time in 2007 for me to defend against Gomez. I respect Guzman but I also feel that his style would suit me so clashing with him wouldn't hold any terrors for me.''
Gomez has already suggested in British boxing trade paper ''Boxing News'' that, if Arthur beats Gogoladze, then he would be up for a rematch with the Scot.

I can understand why Arthur would want to avenge his only loss, but in honesty it would be a step backwards for him, he should be looking to get a world title shot not fighting a guy who is pretty much finished and who he would comfortably beat.

Arthur who lost the first fight would beat Gomez now, the improved version of Arthur should batter him and I just dont see the point other than to get one back, it is a bit like if Haye was chasing Thompson instead of fighting Mormeck.

Arthur should be pushing for a genuine title shot now.

I happen to agree with you Strike, I dont see from a professional point of view what good an Arthur-Gomez rematch would do. If Arthur beats Gogoladze, then he should be aiming to fight the best in the division.

However, hes got a point when he says a rematch would create massive public interest. (& a big payday for both him & Gomez)

Now Strike, we talked about this before, how I was annoyed at that 'Gomez the movie' cos I thought it was only being made cos he beat a big scottish prospect, Alex Arthur.

Now Im just guessing, but dont you think maybe Arthur felt the same way I did when he heard about this film & thought "Fuck it, its time to rematch Gomez to shut him & everyone else up & stick that film right up their arses" Cos up until that film was announced, Arthur had never bothered about rematching Gomez, but hes felt disrespected by englanders making a film about it & now wants revenge?

just a thought...

It is possible, but it is probably more likely that he heard some comments from Gomez or read Gomez saying he would do him again and he thought lets shut him up.

The rematch for the WBO title would be interesting and an easy match to make. Bring it on! :good

I think Arthur should let it be. This would def be a step backwards. Unless Gomez comes back and achieves something of note I think this fight will just be slowing Alex's progress.

well for all those saying it's one step back...look at wlad vs brewster??? or even more bizarrly wlad vs sanders :lol

you can take a step back if it's a rematch i feel

I dont think Wlad beating a faded brewster means anything either and Wlad beating Sanders means nothing.

When you young and up and coming and hav a genuine shot at a World title, why waste your time?

If Gomez does something worthwhile then fight him, if not, dont bother.

I do not think this is about his career so much as for his pide. It would sell a lot of tickets and the in the end is the name of the game. I was at the last bout and even though my guy lost it was, as a spectacle, the best fight I have ever seen.

I don't think it will be high on his 'to do' list but i think it will still be on it.

About time.

Ballsy when you think you will go through Gogoladze, Guzman and Gomez in six months! That could be three losses right there.

Dunky is Gomez still fighting?

It will be interesting to see how Alex Arthur gets on.

In the future I don't like Guzman for him though. In fact stylewise I think Guzman can do Pac Man

I don't agree with some of you, WHEN he beats Gogoladze i'd love to see him fight Gomez at Edinburgh castle. Not only is that a 5 minute walk from my pad, the atmosphere would be electric and its ONE match, its not going to hinder his plans to move on in the division. As a fighter i cant accept not revenging defeats, so lets make this fight happen

he sure is Olu, he came back out of retirement just to irritate me again I think;)

Aye, it will be interesting to see how Arthur gets on tonight. Tough fight for him, but if he can get past Gogoladze then the big time looms for the scotsman!

I will wait to see how Arthur gets on before offering my thoughts on a possible fight with Guzman. After seeing Nicky Cook get beat, its a sharp reminder that fighting american based fighters like Luaveno & Gogoladze can be a risky business, & one should never count ones chickens...

I see what you mean Dunky.

I give Alex a shot at world level against the right opponent. However I really don't know that much about tonights opponent which worries me for Arthur.

I suspect a Gomez fight would be like Wlad Brewster 2. Who knows tho. It would shift tickets on the back of the first contest.

this Gogoladze will beat Arthur comfortably unless he focuses on the fight. Gogoladze is no Gomez

Gogoladze showed in the first round hes a quality fighter, AAA is going to have his work cut out to beat this guy. He looks a bit wild though with some looping punches, maybe Arthur can catch him.

tricky start for arthur.

some might have all 3 for this georgian.

Arthur just got a big cut on his right eye i think, if its headbutt then AAA is in trouble because after 4 rounds this fight will go to scorecards and AA will lose. AA may have snook the 4th, but he could have lost all 4 really.

Arthur is definately going to win. Gogo is getting tired and is now getting hurt. Arthur wont stop him, but wins on points.

Now 66-66 after 7 rounds on my card.

Gogo is down again in the 10th as i talk. Arthur may yet get a stoppage.

I thought it would happen a little sooner and I happened to be involved in betting under 9.5 rounds, so tell me that Gogo collapsed in the first half of the round. I put much more just on Arthur to win, but I want the kicker.

Personally,i think Alex Arthur doesnt need to fight Gomez.Gomez had his chance and blew it.

He did leave Arthur lifeless in the middle of the ring though.
