View Full Version : Jermain Taylor all class

I just watched the post fight press conference of Taylor v Pavlik II and instead of discrediting Kelly Pavlik ... he gave Pavlik respect. It was apparent that it was a close fight and some of the media personalities were trying to get him to say that he thought he won the fight. But JT said that he didn't want to do that ... He seen what Bernard Hopkins did to him and it discredited JT's win over him and took away from JT's glory. By saying that, he didn't create any controversay, and he let Kelly Pavlik enjoy his victory.
I think that was very classy and the attitude of a true winner - despite losing. He couldve argue that he thought he won the fight, but instead he gave credit where credit was due.
We need more guys in the sport like this man ... taking nothing away from his opponent ... saying that he gave it his all but it wasn't good enough ... not letting his ego ruin the moment for both fighters.
No matter what anyone says about JT ... he's truely a man of principle and grants respect.
Totally agree and can't wait for his comeback. :good

It is kind of humorous that the guy we all hated for being on the winning end of bad decisions is quite classy after being on the wrong end of one.

He's underrated on here as a fighter.
He is one of the most trashed fighters on eastside boxing.
Which is partly due to the perception that he was an HBO corporate fighter.

The fact that he can gain more clout in defeat say alot about his character.
You see guys like Bernard and Oscar who lose and can never accept defeat ... even though its very apparent that both guys have tasted convincing defeats.

Yeah because of the fight being so close ... he couldve bitched and complained about not getting the decision ... and totally discredited Pavlik ... but like he did when he beat Hopkins ... he gave respect and contributed anything positive on his end to his training.

Agreed. Always thought JT is quite classy and deserves respect. Suprisingly he always got in trouble for the judges mistakes, even though he tried to sort out the judges mistakes by rematching the opponent. Whether it the decisions were controversial is also questionable but he still got hate for it.
A real shame cos we need guys like him in the sport.

"He's underrated on here as a fighter." He gets two albeit disputed wins over Hopkins while ESB fav Calzaghe gets one win over Hopkins but Calzaghe who looked far less talented with the punching power & technique of a female is supposed to be several classes above Taylor?:-(

Taylor won me over in the first Pavlik fight. In the second fight I was more impressed with JT than with Pavlik. I had Pavlik winning 116-112, but I do not ever recall a fighter showing as much improvement in one fight as JT did. I'm looking forward to his comback, and I think he will do quite well at 168.

Couldn't agree more. Taylors wins over Hopkins were more impressive than Calslappys yet Calslappy is viewed as a God yet Jermain is somehow a bum :huh
Taylor has fought the best fighters out there, OK he's lost a couple but he's never shirked a challenge and has class in abundance. I can't understand why he's so hated on, personally. I still think he'd beat Calzaghe pretty comfortably.

on ESB .... JC is a god while JT is a bum
Fortunately, JT should eventually or inevitably meet up with the best at 168 and they'll learn he always had what it takes to be extremely competitive with the very best at 168 and may well have what it takes to go all the way ... Calzaghe OTOH won't be fighting Jermaine Taylor ... too strong and athletic ...

Probably the way he was raised. Somewhere in one of my old posts you will find a quote about Jermain's mother waiting for Kelly as he exited the stage after the press conference and thanked him for being respectful of her son. (Pavlik NEVER talked trash about him before the fights either and used words like "great champion". This may be why Lowe is getting ticked at Lockett. He feels the champion deserves respect just like Kelly paid to Jermain)
I also would love to see Taylor/Calzaghe. Styles make fights and I think he may actually match up better against Joe than Kelly would. I think it would be an eye opener. NEVER going to happen thouhg. :( I think Taylor lost steam at 160 because of weight issues. That is why he looked much better at 168.

I don't know what's so laughable about it to be honest. If you look at the stats Taylor has two wins over a better version of Hopkins that Calslappy fought, has fought better comp overall and holds height and reach advantage and is also a southpaw. Calzaghe has never KO'd an elite fighter and has struggled with some average guys, so why is it so funny to suggest that Taylor could beat him :huh

No way in hell would Calslappy take on Taylor....he's got the ability and will to fight, and he's young enough to carry it off for a start.
It amazes me that the Calslappy nuthuggers laugh this off just because Jermaine has been beaten and Joe hasn't. There's a reason for that, and the reason goes by the name of Frank ******.

Taylors best wins weren't even wins? What about Reid and Hopkins?
Seriously, when all you've got to boast about is a disputed decision over a 43 year old who put you on your arse with a nothing punch then it's time to shut the fuck up.

You sound like you are just reading off boxrec, because whichever version Taylor fought he didn't do it more convincingly. He fuckin lost

Funny I was convinced that Taylor was a southpaw, fuck knows where I got that from. Despite that he does hold certain advantages over Calslappy, and yes I watched Taylor from the beginning, no boxrec here. If I'd used boxrec I'd have known he was orthodox - think, McFly, think ;)
Fact is that Calslappy looked far worse against a 43 year old Hopkins than Taylor did against a 40 year old. Not much to go on I guess but if they fought tomorrow I'd pick Taylor, who has a far more devastating right hand than Hopkins, who floored Calslappy with a nothing punch.

So devastating he hasn't knocked any fucker out? He couldn't knock Cory cunting Spinks and Kassim 'Wet Dream For A Middleweight' Ouma out
So, what is so deadly about his right hand again?

Yes, Taylor hasn't KO'd anyone of note either, but at least he put Pavlik on queer st for an entire round and bamboozled Hopkins for 8 rounds with his skills. Calslappy got knocked down in the opening seconds V Hopkins and well that's about it really, that's his claim to fame.
Also, for every bad fighter Jermain hasn't KO'd I could name you 10 that Joe hasn't, so don't go down that road :hi:

I don't need to go down the road of who Calzaghe has knocked out. He has 45 wins for no loss, beat Hopkins more clearly than Taylor despite the knockdown (Taylor didnt fuckin win), beat Kessler, Eubank, Lacy
In comparison Taylor's resume is actually losses to Hopkins, a very debateable decision to Winky-Wright, KTFO and outboxed by Kelly Pavlik (how the fuck do you get outboxed by Pavlik? :rofl) and 2 uninspiring showings against JUNIOR middleweights :rofl
Not that resumes win you fights, skills win you fights, which Joe has infinitely more. Taylor is a great athlete, not a great boxer, there are very few attributes he compares favourably to Joe Calzaghe :yep

Taylor is a better fighter than Calzaghe ... Calzaghe throws windmill punches and he doesn't show the ability to throw straight punches.
You find a guy (Chad Dawson) who throws straight punches, just as fast, more mobile/agile, just as strong ... as Calzaghe he's going to find himself in alot of trouble. HIs most notable wins came against a straight up and down - come forward European style fighter and an aged fighter who recently has shown a decline in endurance. Hopkins still knocked him down and made him miss alot ... I think that Calzaghe is overrated ... I think in a shorter career, Taylor has fought just as many former/current champions than Calzaghe has in a damn near 20 yr career.

Since we're on the subject of Calzaghe ... Taylor can beat Calzaghe ... I think that if they were to fight - Taylor would stop Calzaghe --
Calzaghe depends much on speed and nothing else ... not boxing skill, chin, power, or defense.
Calzaghe is very hittable ... squares up to his opponents when throwing combonations, and throws very wide punches.
His foot movement is overrated ...

It was the truth ... i'm not caught up in the hype of Calzaghe ... he's not impressive.
I think a win over Kessler isn't impressive ... any fighter that uses angles could beat Kessler - he's a come forward fighter --
Hopkins showed that he slows down in the latter rounds ... he didn't seem exausted but he didn't seem like he could keep up.
Taylor is younger ... and a better boxer ...
Guys that can beat Calzaghe:
Lucian Bute
Jermain Taylor
Roy Jones Jr
Chad Dawson
Antonio Tarver
Those guys can throw straight punches ... those guys would bust Calzaghe up. I'm sure that all of those guys seen the flaws in Calzaghe and knows that he's very limited. I like Joe's personality, but i'm not sold on his boxing ability.

45 wins, 42 nobodies or over the hill fighters and 2 overrated bums and a pensioner. Wow what an all time great this man is
And you have the nerve to criticise Taylor for fighting the best opposition available? Joe avoided everyone significant for as long as possible yet he's a hero for beating who exactly?
The Jones match up is still up in the air I see....Joe is pondering that one long and hard, is the guy shot enough? Will he catch me like old man Hopkins did? (the answer is YES by the way)
Expect Calslappy to retire with injury soon, rather than face old Roy. Roy was Calslappys worst nightmare 8 years ago and he still is today despite him being 50% of what he once was.

Or is he waiting for Pavlik to dispose of Lockett so he can start negotiating THAT fight? Some folks with ears in the right places are saying it will happen.
