Lennox Lewis i reckon has done it all the right way....he quit and stayed quit and did so on top.

No scandals no mess no shit afterwards just done and he left a massive hole on the division...

Who else has done it the right way ????

(considering so many fighters havent...)

Sven Ottke, sooner or later the fraud he would have had to leave Germany.

DLH is preparing to retire the best way- money in the bank and a promotion firm.

Lennox Lewis is the best recent example of a good retirement.

Getting out before the inevitable slide starts, and before losing to unworthy contenders.

Lennox Lewis' retirement I believe was a prudent one, but I would'nt call it the best....
....he did leave with a cloud hanging over his head that Vitali had got the better of him, and that the cut on Vitali saved the fight for Lewis.

.....it also did'nt help that he had promised that there would be a rematch, and then retired.

A prudent retirement, but under the circumstances, not at all a fighter bowing out with his head held fully high going out on his terms.
.....I think Vitali set the terms that hurried Lewis' decision to retire!:yep

Very true.
It's just refreshing that he is showing no interest in stepping back into the bigtime.

Yup, but still, he wasn't really unfair to Vitali. I believe a fighter has the right whenever he wants, it's his health on the line. It would be a different story if he fought someone else than Vitali instead of retiring - now that would be a disgrace.

So I'm voting Lennox Lewis. Even though the temptation is still there he's retired and his legacy is safer because of that.

I think it depends on two things mainly, leaving nothing on the table in terms of big challenges and doing it before hitting the way down on performance.

I think Calzague could have it better than Lewis with a couple more fights.

mike tyson//he knew he was done and admitted it and even appoligized no excusesThat guy's story might still end up tragically. You can never really know what kind of trouble Tyson might end up in as time goes on.

Anyway, as far as great retirements have go guys like Max Schmeling, George Foreman, Lennox Lewis, and Marvin Hagler all spring to mind. All guys made or are making lots of cash in different financial endeavors, and each one is just living life to the fullest. Proof that there can be life after boxing if you just use your damn head for anything other than a punching bag.

I think Rocky Graziano had a prety good life after boxing too didn't he? Didn't he start doing movies or something?

No one mentioned Larry Holmes?

He is filthy rich, retired (and still is) in good health. Never involved in any scandals/crime/drugs during or after his career (or at least none that I have heard of).

Lennox is the kind of guy who fought everyone when they were at or near the peak of their careers in terms of drawing potential. The guy made too much money. In fact he made so much money that he turned down a 20million type payday because he realised he would not be in top shape. And to top it off he is not even close to being punch drunk

Well played Lennox

I bet if you asked him Muhammad Ali would tell you he has enjoyed he's retirement greatly, other than he's condition he has lead a good life away from the ring.

What's classifies as a good retirement?

Money? Health? Or a combination of both?

Lennox, Foreman, Hagler, SRL - they are seem to be pretty healthy, and I'm sure their bank accounts are just fine. DLH and Floyd will probably fit in here, too.

Or does it also include going out on top? If so, we can take out DLH, SRL, and Forman.

For a boxer, I think it would include all of the above, with more emphasis put on health, followed by how the fighter went out and called it a career......Finances for me would be third in my criterea.

You can have money and be miserable, and not have so much and be as happy as can be.

Money imo is overrated, and it is'nt the main criterea for happiness.

Lewis should have/could have rematched Vitaly. I guess he felt walking away with a win was better than risking the "loss".
