Both fighters didn't hit that hard.
Benetiz was involved in a lot of split decisions in his career.
Benetiz is bigger than Ortiz.
Benetiz by SD over Ortiz.

I can't answer your question as I don't know too much about Ortiz yet but I've been catching up on some of his fights at the weight, and he was pretty awesome.
I've come away very impressed with him so far...

At 140, Ortiz just might be slowed to the point where Benitez would be able to have his way with him. Could be simular to the Palomino fight. or Duran fight for Wilfred. Avoiding punches & countering beautifully. to capture a Unanimous decision.

Ortiz becasue Benitez trained a week for a fight. For Leonard he trained 10 days....and Leonard wouldn't give him a rematch...too bad...I think Benitez would then have been an all time great because he'd learned to train 6 weeks for a fight.

Got any reasons why Wilfred wouldn't train very long?

overconfidence maybe, especially when it comes to his defense. guy's a prodigy but it seems that he doesn't train his butt off

Benitez only training a week for fights was likely garbage.
He simply wouldn't have been in good enough shape to compete.

Carlos Ortiz was great. A rare breed. But Wilfred Benitez was of a rarer breed. As aptly said, a prodigy.
Decision win for Benitez.

Benitez would win a razor close decision over Ortiz IMO.

Ortiz the greater fighter imo, legacy-wise anyway, one of the finest 135ers ever. Benitez great in another way, h2h brilliant, as we think of that in their peaks. Also, the 'prodigy' aspect that many have thouched on here. Anyway, this is at 140, i'll pick Wilfred reluctantly!

He simply wouldn't have been in good enough shape to compete. But it is true, By his own admission. Also His father/manager confirmed this. His father was so fustrated by Wilfred's unpreparedness he actually slapped Wilfred during the Bruce Curry fight, Because Wilfred was struggling against an opponent he should have easily outclassed.

Meh, i fully believe he was a poor trainer, but a week is going too far, at least on a consistent basis.
next thing we will be hearing he never did any training at all and the legend grows even bigger.

next thing we will be hearing he never did any training at all and the legend grows even bigger. Not consistantly, Just occasionally he did this. When he trained hard he did a magnificent job as against Palomino or Cervantes. I think he did have a terrible boxing relationship with his father, Who I believe actually pulled Wilfred's hair during another bout. & was about to get thrown out of the arena.
