Kimbo Slice and Brett Rogers in altercation at EliteXC press conference ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

by John Morgan on Jun 01, 2008 at 4:11 am ET
[Only registered and activated users can see links] N.J. – While millions of viewers around the country were able to tune in to a night of live mixed martial arts action on network television, far fewer were able to witness a verbal exchange turned near-altercation between victorious EliteXC heavyweight fighters Brett Rogers and Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson –- and Ferguson's entourage.

The tension began to brew before Ferguson had even made his way to the post-event press conference that followed Saturday's "EliteXC: PRIMETIME" event.

Rogers, who defeated Jon Murphy in the night's first televised bout, was one of the first fighters at the conference to address the media, and he made it a point to discuss what he felt was a less-than-stellar performance by headliner Ferguson.

"I seen some [expletive] today," Rogers said. "I seen some [expletive], some garbage-ass [expletive]. I'm a heavyweight, and I feel I'm a true heavyweight. (James) Thompson? Much respect. But I'm saying it like this. Kimbo Slice, man, that was just garbage, man."

The conflict continued to grow when Ferguson took to the podium 20 minutes later. Before speaking, Ferguson shook the hand of every fighter on the panel. Rogers did so reluctantly and with a disgusted look on his face as he refused to look Ferguson in the eye.

When a reporter brought Rogers' earlier statements to Ferguson's attention, the YouTube legend did his best to defuse the issue.

"Everybody's entitled to their opinion," Ferguson said.

Moments later, with Ferguson still at the podium, Rogers was asked directly if he would like to match up with Ferguson in his next bout.

"Looking at the fight tonight, man, yeah," Rogers said. "A man is man. And what I saw in this man today, it was just garbage."

Rogers then turned and addressed Ferguson directly and brought up a controversial "phantom tap" that some believe occurred at the close of the second round.

"I'm going to speak it real," Rogers said. "It was garbage. You did tap. You did tap out (and) I was right there."

Ferguson responded immediately.

"That sounds like a challenge, big dog," Ferguson said.

As Ferguson and his entourage converged on Rogers (and the entire stage), "The Grim" refused to back down. Media members, including a certain MMAjunkie.com ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) reporter who sat just a few feet from the stage, soon found themselves -- literally -- in the middle of the melee.

"It is a challenge," Rogers replied.

As the EliteXC staff worked to restore order, the two fighters glared intently across the podium. Ferguson was being restrained by EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw and Vice President Jared Shaw, as well as members of his entourage, while Rogers was being held back by fellow panelist Phil Baroni.

Despite the best efforts of many, the verbal tirade between the two continued.

"I ain't letting no bush [slur] call me out like that, man," Ferguson said.

"You talking all hard, and you bring that garbage-ass [expletive] today," Rogers replied.

Ferguson was quickly calmed by Gary and Jared Shaw, but members of Ferguson's entourage continued to shout at Rogers.

"You a hater," the group directed repeatedly at Rogers.

"I'm a hater?" Rogers asked. "I'm a hater because I'm putting [Ferguson] on the spot?"

A member of Ferguson's management was finally able to corral the majority of the entourage, telling Ferguson that, "We'll get our chance in the cage."

The tense moment was finally over as Ferguson and his entourage left the room, and further questioning resumed for the remaining panel members.

:yep

Il keep it real i hope Kimbo makes that fat tub of lard tap. At least Kimbo showed some respect. Rogers is just a clown.

Are you kidding? Is this is joke?

Rogers is 100% right, what took place last night wasn't just garbage, it was criminal, it was outright robbery.

Whats Rogers done? He put Thompson in a fucking coma with one shot, when Kimbo couldn't even knock him down with 25 clean ones.

Yeah the fight was crap but Kimbo never said he was gonna go out and destroy wvery fighter with ease. Rodgers was disrespectful and there no way around it.

Kimbo at least shows respect, never boasts and takes MMA seriously to train hard yet he will still get no love from the "real MMA" fans. Give the man a break, blame his promoters for hyping him because I have yet to hear him hype himself

Shaw immediately made sure to let everybody know that Rogers won't get the Kimbo fight.

Can't have your superstar lieing in a dead heap in the center of the ring after 1 minute of the first round.

Yeah it wasn't classy, but it was smart. The fighter who finally destroys the Kimbo myth will get a huge boost in their career-deserved or not. Rogers is not a name yet- but he seems to have some talent.

I seriously doubt this fight will ever happen, no way is Shaw going to risk his only cash cow in MMA. Look for Sean Gannon next, or maybe Giant Silva.

Rogers can beat Kimbo, he may just do it if they want, but EliteXC isn't about to risk anything, after the Thompson fight, EliteXC might even lower the opposition Kimbo faces, because it's a business, and EliteXC wants all they can get from Kimbo, and who can blame them, maybe we'll see Lesnar and Butterbean fight Kimbo sometime.

They better keep Kimbo away from both Lesnar and Butterbean.
Brock has tremendous amateur wrestling credentials and freakish
strength. He's a true athlete who is working to be a more all-round
mma fighter and is much younger and a better athlete than Kimbo.
Butterbean is a decent journeyman boxer, who would K.O. Sean
Gannon easily, the same fat policeman that K.O'ed Kimbo back in
his streetfighting days. Butterbean also has an iron chin and is
just one tough dude. I say Butterbean just knocks Kimbo on his
ass. Slice hasn't much of a future as a mma prizefighter but I
was impressed with his classy behavior at the post-fight presser.
I hope he is saving and investing his money wisely or we'll see
him back on the mean streets in a few years beating up hobos
and crack addicts for chump change.

If it were not for the stupid hype I would like Kimbo. He seems like a pretty honest and respectful guy. Even in his street fights he was not disparaging to his opponents and he has made no bold claims about being a great MMA fighter.

I don't think what Rogers said and did was called for, but I am so sick of the Kimbo hype that I still hope Rogers knocks him out. Hearing people say that Kimbo would be a live underdog in a boxing match with Haye etc.:patsch

Does anyone have a link to the Rogers/Thompson fight? I just don't see what some of you are seeing in Rogers when you say he is going to KO Kimbo. IMO he looked as raw as Kimbo did in the ring - Rogers just had a smaller guy to fight and scored his KO.

Yeah here you go...

Compare that finish to Kimbos performance. Kimbo landed a flush combination like that and did nothing but make Thompson take a few steps back...plus Thompson nearly stopped him in the second round.

Here Thompson got a take down but never got any control over Rogers and then he got sparked out.

Rogers doesn't really have stellar hands, and I seriously doubt his ground game is any better than Thompson's. With that said, I still think he beats Kimbo, who flat out sucks.

Did you watch the link? He looked much better against Thompson than Kimbo. His ground game was nothing true, but he was never in trouble on the ground or dominated at any point by Thompson, unlike Kimbo. And when the shots landed....
Big difference.

I watched the Thompson/Rogers fight live. I can't base how this goes on how both guys handled JT. I don't think Rogers is a great fighter. I just think Kimbo is even worse :good

I thought Rogers was bullied by Thompson. Rogers' power saved him. I don't think Kimbo hits as hard as Rogers. Power may, or may not, be the difference if Kimbo and Rogers square/octagon/circle jerk off. I just wouldn't base their match-up off their Thompson fights alone. Both were out muscled at times. Both caught Thompson with good punches. I repeat, I just think Rogers hits harder.

I meant circle off. I'm drinking and "circle jerk" looked funny to me.

Thanks for the link. The Grim Rogers certainly handled himself better against Thompson than did Kimbo. Rogers seems like the kind of fighter Kimbo needs to be fighting at this point in his career as they both seem evenly matched both in terms of physicality and technique. Beating Rogers would be a good win for Kimbo or else Grim could try to knock him out and take his place at the EliteXC table.

Brett Rogers will be a top heavyweight MMA fighter soon. So i think Rogers will win this fight, but Kimbo Slice is still a tough guy.

If Kimbo Slice got to fight Chuck Liddell, Kimbo would win
