View Full Version : How many fans of Vernon Forrest about?

I'm a fan, I like his style and think he's great to watch at his best. His last fight against Picirillo showed some good rejuvenation, even though Pici is a B- fighter, Vernon won every round, KOed him and showcased good speed, rejuvenated timing and very good defensive prowess.
I think if that's the real indicator of where he's at, he could beat anybody at 154 currently and that would be really awesome for Vernon Forrest fans to see, would love it if he could win a belt or two before he finally burns out.
Seems he's underrated on here.... most pick Margarito to beat him?:patsch
Why all of the Forrest hate? He's an awesome fighter, great to watch, smooth and precise with some power, great boxer-puncher stylist with textbook displays.

I'm a fan of the Viper. I saw the rematch with Mosley in person down in Indianapolis and have been a fan of his since before he won a belt. I like his smooth style. I thought he won the Mayorga rematch.
I think a lot of the hate towards him on this board has to do with what many saw as a robbery against Quartey, who is a very popular fighter on ESB.

Who picks Marg over him? I have never ever seen that, yet alone MOST people saying that? I think he is a good fighter, although can be beaten against the wrong style for him. He has trouble adapting. Against Shane Mosley he looked unbelievable though, a truely sensational performance.

I like Forrest, it's a shame that a boxer of his skill and caliber never really got his big break, even after beating Mosley. I think the UD loss to Mayorga looks alot worse on his record than the KO, also.
I would pick Cotto over him no question at 154 at the moment. Terrible style match up for Forrest. Cotto would still be a heavy guy at 154 also, despite people saying he is "small". Height and Weight are very different things, for some reason many people here cannot grasp these simply concepts.

Yes, but that wasn't the best Forrest and Quartey is still a good fighter, better than some of the overrated Welter's of this current era.
Vernon seems to have corrected the shoulder issue's, even though the opponents in Baldo and Picirillo are lesser than Ike Quartey, if you analyse his individual work, he was much quicker and sharper in foot and hand, the shoulder problems weren't evident.
Against Picirillo he looked close to prime. Opponent class can't always be an excuse against such, because you have to watch the guy in question individually and if you do, anybody would see Forrest looked great.
He's on limited time though, I hope he gets a better fight after Mora, like against Alcine or somebody.

Think about that mate and go find the 'Forrest vs Margo' thread, not only do they pick Margarito, but they pick Margarito to 'break him down, destroy him, Knock him the fuck out & take him by wide UD'.

I agree that Forrest was far from prime in the Quartey fight and Ike is still a formidable opponent.
I was pleased to see Vernon look better in his last fight. He shoulder seemed much stronger than it did against Bazooka.
Vernon is a great boxer, hampered by that shoulder injury. Who knows what would have been.

At his best, I think it's universal that he's an underlooked elite level fighter that does well H2H. If Forrest's last two showing's of improvement are the real indication, I don't see anybody at 154 beating him, nor would I favour any of the current Welterweight's, a division I think is a bit overrated due to the amount of recognisable names more so than overall quality.
I even favour him over Cotto, stylistically he's also terrible for Mayweather.

Yep, agreed. He had (I guess still has) length, timing, a great jab, a well placed right hand. His shoulder injury took away his jab though, it not quite the same.

After what Forrest did to Mosley, he was the 1 guy both De La Hoya & Mayweather did not want to fight.
Oscar was using his beating of Mayorga as a, I beat the guy who beat the guy excuse to avoid Forrest.. IMO
(Oscar is my fav fighter, and I still say this...)
Floyd was defo going in another direction...
Also a Fernado Vargas Vs. Vernon Forrest would have explosive..
Vernon's bum shoulder really hampered him at the wrong time.
In all honesty tho I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Mayorga III.
Vernon want's that fight prob more than anything.
before it's all over for Forrest tho, I'd like to see him get that one big fight.
Or get a revenge match Vs. Mayorga (Maybe Ricardo does have his #, maybe not let's find out)

Forrest is a damn good boxer, id make him an even $$$ money fight against Margarito, and a live underdog against Floyd-Oscar, after all he schooled Mosley twice, but that was over shadowed by his KO loss to Mayorga who had his number, however at 35, with a bad shoulder his best days are over..:smoke

Forrest has been the most avoided fighter over the last 10 years. He was ODLH's mandatory for over 2 years, and Oscar never fought him. Only Mosley had the stones to take him on. He kind of let his own celebrity get to his own head and payed for it dearly, but he won the second Mayorga fight, at least unofficially. He's had the shoulder injury, which has healed. He is at an elite level again, but no one ever mentions his name. He's a great fighter and deserves a good payday.

i'm on this express. been a long time fan since he UD'd mosely. i love his style. textbook, and is one of the few pure boxers who make fights enjoyable. i really enjoyed the second fight he had with mayorga (who i'm also a fan of). i was actually a bit sad for vernon, as that loss hampered his career. seems to be mounting a good campaign at 154. shutout baldomir better than floyd, and absolutely schooled picirillo. thats how elite fighters perform.
Yeah, that's fine. But Margarito?:rofl

Yeah mate that is ridiculous if people are picking Marg to beat Forrest, they need to get their head checked. Marg has trouble against guys who can jab and keep him at bay (Forrest). Forrest is also a better overall fighter. So you have a better fighter, against a guy who stylistically he matches up with very well. This is a very easy fight for Forrest, i don't understand the logic behind that pick.

He was ODLH's mandatory for over 2 years, and Oscar never fought him.
ANOTHER LIE! Wow! Pathetic. Forrest was NEVER DLH's Mandatory for OVER two years. DLH was fighting and beating fighters more proven than Forrest during his run at 147.
Only Mosley had the stones to take him on.
and Mayorga, and Ike Quartey and Sergio Mora who all three beat Forrest.
He kind of let his own celebrity get to his own head and payed for it dearly,
Forrest was a one hit wonder. Nothing more, nothing less. Judah is more proven than Forrest.
but he won the second Mayorga fight, at least unofficially.
Perhaps IYO, because I recall seeing Mayorga land more punches, set the tone and pace of the fight and totally throw Forrest off his game plan.
He's had the shoulder injury, which has healed. He is at an elite level again, but no one ever mentions his name. He's a great fighter and deserves a good payday.
He is NOT elite, he was only elite when he beat Mosley and fell off after he lost to Mayorga.
Forrest was nothing more than a ONE HIT WONDER.

Yeah, it ruined my night of boxing and I was feeling excellent about the right after the first 3, it's not like Forrest didn't have what it takes to continue dominating him, bad setback though at 37, for whatever reason.

I wasn't a diehard fan of Vernon, but I tend to root for nice guys in boxing- and Forrest fits that bill. Yes, it didn't help that I truly felt and still feel that Mora is nothing in the equation of being a top fighter and that Vernon gave it away for multiple reasons. The first few rounds were so easy and then it just dropped off and Mora gained control, no stamina... bad tactics, bad corner from McGirt. Silly reasons to lose a fight that you had every ability to dominate.

No, because it makes no sense -
'I'm sure Forrest ain't a fan of him anymore lol'.
The literal meaning is 'I am sure forrest isn't a fan of Forrest anymore', which makes ZERO sense in the context of this thread.
What I thought you meant, as you have serious errors with English consistently, was a poke at me not being a fan of Forrest anymore, as that would have made sense as a reply to the thread.
I can read fine, you lack the ability to express yourself properly on an English speaking forum at times.

Shame to see him lose a fight like the Mora one. A prime and focused Forrest would of slaughtered him.
One thing Forrest has always shown, is a difficulty to adapt. This is what seperates the best from the rest. A great fighter yes, but stylistically he can be beaten. I stand by what i said before the fight, Cotto would be a nightmare for ANY version of Forrest. All styles. Someone like Mayweather however would be a different story.
