My pick will be 50-50... coz both countries boxing representatives are all good, so it will be a toss up for either of them, what do you think guys?

the only 2 fights that matter on that card is
Rey Bautista ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) v Daniel Ponce de Leon ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
Jhonny Gonzalez ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) v Gerry Penalosa ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
I have Bautista beating Deleon and GOnzalez beating Penalosa

you can "develop a chin"?? what kind of training method does that?? :patsch its either you have a tough chin or have a glass one...
anyways i think rey should just work on not to be so careless...i think he has the skills to fight like a slickster....

it will be close because four of the fights include mexican bums. however, roman, dpl, and gonzales all win for sure. im willing to bet one of the bums pulls out a victory to give mexico the cup.

Originally, the winner of the Best-of-7 series on August 11 between budding boxing rivals Mexico and the Philippines was going to receive a $500,000 gold-and-diamond encrusted trophy sculpted by IceLink Watches and promoted by Golden Boy.
However, a big blow to Team Philippines occurred this week when super flyweight #1 contender Z Gorres (26-2-1, 14 KOs) was ruled out with a tear in his retina. Gorres, a southpaw stylist coming off a controversial split decision loss to current WBO champion Fernando Montiel, was heavily favored to defeat Mexican Jose Angel Beranza (30-9-2, 25 KOs), who has tentatively been scratched off the card.
Due to the Gorres injury, the series has now been reduced to SIX bouts, with a potential tiebreaker being discussed right now. The new lineup is as follows, keeping in mind that the fight between Mexican-American Brandon Gonzalez and "TBA" will not count against the six-fight total because he will be fighting at middleweight against a non-Filipino.
______________________________________________________________
(M) Daniel Ponce De Leon (31-1, 28 KOs) vs
(P) Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista (23-0, 17 KOs)
(WBO junior featherweight championship)
EDGE: DE LEON because of his experience, punching power, and Bautista's "the jury is out" chin. Bautista, who also hits like a ton of bricks, can win if he has the discipline to box on the outside when he has to, and counterpunch when De Leon is off balance. This might be too much to ask of the 21-year-old, who has never faced a fighter of this quality before. Then again, Bautista is Golden Boy's current "Golden Boy," so maybe Oscar knows something I don't.
______________________________________________________________
(M) Jhonny "Johnny" Gonzalez (34-5, 29 KOs) vs
(P) Gerry "Fearless" Penalosa (51-6-2, 34 KOs)
(WBO bantamweight championship)
EDGE: While Penalosa has years of experience, including a controversial UD loss to Ponce De Leon where most observers felt he took at least five rounds, GONZALEZ is the man to beat here. He is much taller, longer, and much more complete than De Leon. However, two questions remain: Although he made 118 in his title defense against Irene Pacheco, will Gonzalez be weight-drained from having to make bantam one last time? Furthermore, how will he handle the style of the best technician the Philippines has to offer, and a southpaw at that?
______________________________________________________________
(M) Gerson "El Nene" Guerrero (33-7, 25 KOs) vs
(P) Diosdado "Prince" Gabi (29-3-1, 21 KOs)
(IBF junior bantamweight eliminator)
EDGE: Guerrero will dwarf Gabi by three inches, but GABI has a very slight advantage in the fight because of his boxing ability and newfound power. Both have failed challenges at the world title level against some big names. Himself a victim of current teammate De Leon (KOby2), Guerrero has also lost to Arce-conqueror Cristian Mijares (TKOby8}. On the other hand, while Gabi was blasted by Vic Darchinyan on Shobox (TKOby8}, he took a few rounds from him. In addition, Gabi was fighting two weight classes below his most comfortable weight, 118. Since the move, he has recorded three straight stoppages within two rounds or less, including one over Mauricio Pastrana, who has stopped Guerrero in the past.
______________________________________________________________
(M) Gerardo Verde (15-4, 11 KOs) vs
(P) Bert Batawang (50-6, 34 KOs)
(IBF junior flyweight eliminator)
EDGE: VERDE is the favorite here, as he has more seasoning against proven fighters, including Ivan Calderon (LbyUD12), a fight where he took a couple rounds from the undefeated Iron Boy. Batawang has been a mainstay on the WBO rankings for years, but has no one on his resume to prove he has been tested.
______________________________________________________________
(M) Miguel Roman (21-0, 15 KOs) vs
(P) Michael Domingo (31-14-2, 12 KOs)
(junior featherweight, 6 rounds)
EDGE: ROMAN is an overwhelming favorite here. He's an undefeated prospect with some good names on his resume to date, including two decision wins over Cesar Soto, who once unceremoniously snatched away the WBC featherweight crown from Filipino legend Luisito Espinosa. Domingo is the current Philippine national champ at 118, but he has taken two losses in his last three bouts. Moving up in weight against an undefeated prospect is not an ideal situation.
______________________________________________________________
(P) AJ Banal (13-0-1, 10 KOs) vs
(M) Eric Ortiz (26-6-1, 17 KOs)
(junior bantamweight, 6 rounds)
EDGE: This is a very risky decision by Banal's handlers to put him in this early with a former world champion in ORTIZ, who should be favored. Ortiz once lost his WBC light flyweight strap to Filipino Brian Viloria by first-round knockout, followed by another technical knockout loss to Ulises Solis, brother of Manny Pacquiao KO victim Jorge Solis. On the other hand, although only 18, Banal is a smooth southpaw with power who can beat you by brawling, boxing, or exchanging inside. De La Hoya and GBP have been sending scouts to the Philippines for two years now, so you know he has potential to be something special. This is the undercard fight to keep an eye on before the televised twin world championship bouts.
______________________________________________________________
NON-WORLD CUP BOUT/SPECIAL ATTRACTION
Brandon Gonzales (1-0, 1 KO) vs
TBA
EDGE: Like AJ Banal, GONZALES, a former amateur standout from Sacramento, has been scouted by Golden Boy and is a couple of impressive showings away from a GBP contract.
______________________________________________________________
For once, Golden Boy has put up a very entertaining card with good matchups that people will rightfully put up good money to watch. It's a shame that none of these fighters are household names, mainly for the fact they don't speak fluent English.
I would've liked to see hometown boy and Mexican-American featherweight Vicente Escobedo on the card, especially because he has ties to both nations being a former sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao. Another fighter that would've been a good addition would be 122-pound Mexican prospect Abner Mares, who has called out Bautista on occasion calling him "Bum Bum." Perhaps that will be one for the next World Cup.
Filipino fighters that should have been considered for the card include Glenn Donaire, brother of Darchinyan-conqueror Nonito, who would have stepped in nicely to take on Beranza at a catchweight of 115. Strawweight contender Donnie Nietes has power in his little fists. Finally, new Top Rank signing Bernabe Concepcion, currently WBC Youth Champion at 122, would've also been a good addition to the card, but he and Rodel Mayol just fought on the Morales-Diaz undercard.

To be honest with you the pinoys are at a very huge advantege. They got prospects that are young and good and mexico only has one good fighter in that card and that is gonzalez. All the other mexican fighters are bums including de leon.i wish it wasnt true but it is.Its like having victor ortiz, cazarez, ulisses solis, martin castillo mijares and a few 2 so so fighters against old pinoy fighters. If you dont believe me check their records.i dont understand why d.l.h would do this to his own people but oh well what can you do.That is the reason why the pinoys are very confident.Heck i would be too with those opponents.I just mexico can pull it off.One thing is for sure we gonzalez will win.

Here's my Prediction tonight:
Bautista by KO.
Ponce can be beaten easily by skilled fighter & a fighter who will not be intimidated by his Power. Bautista can be Rocked, But in the 2 fights he's in trouble he's shown how courageous he is, he never backs down. Ponce's Defense is like 7-eleven, it's open 24 hrs a day, Bautista's Power will dent that Chin. BBB(BoomboomBautista) is the most Powerful fighter to test PDL. I've seen Caballero last week & didn't see his Power. South paw Penalosa is too small & yet hit PDL by right hook at will. BBB is Right handed & has a Devastating Straight Right, I see this punch land at will follow by left hook to the body. When PDL duck expect a Left uppercut to straighten him up. BBB will finish PDL By Srt Right or left hook.
Penalosa by KO.
Gonzales is tall & Skillfull but Penalosa has more skill & Ironned jaw. I see Penalosa slipping & countering JG. JG will break down around 9th rd. Penalosa is so Hungry after he was robbed in the last fight. I don't think JG recovered yet from his KO loss to Vasquez.

I'll admit that Caballero didnt impress me as much as I would have hoped last week. But he does have major power for the division, the other guy he was fighting just could take a real good punch. You could see in the later rounds that the other guy was real tired, still I scored it a draw. I dont think Bautista could have taken some of those shots from Caballero. De Leon Ko round 8 over Bautista. De Leon's chin is very solid, Bautista's looked very week in his last outing.

De Leon Ko round 8 over Bautista. De Leon's chin is very solid, Bautista's looked very week in his last outing.
Medina has a Solid Turtle defense & a good counter puncher that's why Bautista has some problems with him. Ponce doesn't have defense or Counter punching.

It's hard to bet against an established superpower of little men's boxing like Mexico. However, the Philippines is on a roll right now, kickstarted by Pacman some nearly 4 yrs. ago. The cards are stacked against the Philos, but being the eternal romantic, i'll root for the underdog. Prediction: 3-2-1.

It's reported that Pac went back home in the Philippines. I'm Pac-king dissapointed with Pac. Will he stay for another day & support his countrymen??? He better have a valid reason or I'll lose respect for him!!!

How the fuck did Roman lose that fight....WTF!!!!!!!!???
according to fightnews.com, that fight was all action and at the end, they thought the decision could go either way.
for the remaining fights I will go with, Gorres, Gonzalez and Bautista.

No such thing as 50-50 because there will be 7 matches. The country that wins at least 4 matches will be declared winner.
one was cancled so in case of draw , Barrera-Pacquioa winner takes it

I never thought I say this...Im starting to lose respect for the guy also
All of our young fighters owe alot to PAC and thats where it should stop. Meaning dont follow his footsteps and stay dedicated to the craft.
I've long suspected when someone mentioned here on ESB that in Visaya, his hometown he is very cocky and hes not the same humble guy you see in the Media...I believe that now
How do you not represent your team and country...:huh
me too. he is starting to get arrogant, attitude-wise. holding grudges against columnist, being unprofessional and not much focus in training these days. :verysad

Ho would have been unbelievable if he was 5'7...I mean Jhonny had a foot on him height and reach wise...I was thinking how the hell will he reach him...and Boom! what timing...
Lets not forget, hes got some pop
and his defense is awesome. i mean, he was getting hit by a lot and catches most on his gloves. but then he got his square in the face and he walked right throught it. damn. good times. i hope gerry retires now. not many fighters retire as world champs and he has a chance to do just that. he won a title 10 years after winning his first belt. how sweet is that?

I really wasnt believing reports about his being unproffesional and other stuff before. i think his fame is getting in his head. I didnt like it when he did not show up for the weigh in for world cup, He was the team captain!

My Ringside report:
I came in late Missed the whole Gabi fight. Used restroom, when I came out, Lupe contreras Announced Gabi as the winner.
Find our seats, we're around pinoys from LA,Mex front & Back & some White guys in front. We seat Ringside corner where HBo guys do the Talking & Block our View, Packing Lenox is too tall.
Domingo surprise me, He shows heart & drive to win. Well Roman is just overated, He looks weak & unskilled. he complains a lot. WE're wildly cheering when Domingo Announced the winner. I lead the Chant " Filipino..2-Zero.." in the tune of Bebot-Bebot by Blackeyed peas.
Break.. Beer for $18.00 . Authograph & Picture opportunity with Diane Castillejo, Donaire, Mayol, Gabi, Steve Kim, Katsidis, Recah & JMM. I'm the Cameraman so most Pix is me cousin & the celebs.
AJ time, Told Pinoy fans, this is our best Prospect, Don't blink it won't last. Usher saw me videotaping with my DIG cam, cut me off.Pac it I'll just enjoy the fight. AJ Ko the Guy, we explode!!! Chant " Filipino 3-Zero" 3X.
Pee time.. PIx taking. Talk to Nonito a little bit. He's nice to all, very accomodating. Told Mayol, Don't give up, you'll be a Champion too.
Gorres time. Lennox & other Guy starts talking, Blocking us. Fights a little bit exciting. Gorres won. Chant 'Filipino 4-Zero!!" 3X.
National anthem, By a Fag Pinoy Brother. Packing boring, I can sing better than them. Mex Anthem, 2 old couple, the woman out of tune. I sang part of the Anthem. US anthem, Trio of Hot Pinay/Hispanic, decent but not good enough.
Gerry time, Gonzales is a Hella Boring, Running away, Mexicans even yelled & egg him " Common Jhonny!!!" White guy in front of me "Fight!! Fight!!! I yelled " Don't be scared, Stop Running!! It's just a small guy!!! Gerry KO him we Chant " Filipino 5-zero. 3X.
Boom time, we started yelling " Filipino 6-zero!!, White guy want to bet pick Ponce, I take it, $20 then raised it to $50. One Round my Money down the drain.
Talk to steve Kim, He said Boom-Boom shows his weakness even in sparring at the wild card gym. Told Kim" You know what I have a guy for Ponce & I mentioned Concepcion. Kim aggreed with me that Concepcion is really impressive.
Still happy though, I predict 5-1, just different guy lost. An enjoyable night for my First Live Boxing event. I won't mind $50 bet loss. the Filipino fighters makes me Proud of being Filipino.
Mex behind shakes our hand, Good fight, No hard feelings. The Mexicans seems really respect Filipino Fighters nowadays. Some complaints of Matchmaking in favor of Pinoys in the early fights.
Lennox signing authographs, just want some Pix with him, just passed me, & say no to the rest of Fans asking for Authograph. Who da pac he is anyway. I'm so tired, I work in the Morning & no time to chase for pix & Autograph.
Swing bout, Nobody cares, Black guy KO a Mex Bum in one rd.
Last Pix opportunity, Tecate girls round girls. put my hands around them, SSSOft.
Time to go home.
Watch the fight, Internet, time to sleep, will work 6 am. Goodnight guys.

I more than agree w/ you this time, UD.:good How about a rematch w/ Ponce de Leon? That would be blockbuster of fight to pass by Gerry.
i disagree. i see no point in de leon fiighting penalosa again, he wouldn't want to risk taking a body shot like that. and if you ask de leon, he'll just be saying that what merit is there in defeating a guy he's already defeated before
as for gerry, please retire. go enjoy the belt and teach the young pinoy fighters some of your defense! specially bautista because he freaking needs it
