Did anyone read this novel based on the life and career of boxing legend, Archie Moore?

Good stuff. Definately worth a read for anyone interested.

But very good story. I learned a lot from reading it and have a whole different perspective on Archie Moore.

I thought it was a disappointment. Great material to work with; Moore was about as interesting a guy to ever lace 'em up, but the book is very dry reading, I thought.

Really? You thought it was dry? I didn't think so at all. I found the depiction of events often brought a smile to my face. Some interesting bits of information.

I thought he did a good job bringing Archie's character out.

........Yeah, I thought it just sort of blandly went from set of circumstances to set of circumstances without really flushing out much about the man. There's a lot of data there, and the odd story about this venture or that project or a certain fight, but I thought it fell well short of telling us about what made him tick. It's just a bunch of stuff that happened.

All of which is of course necessary in telling a story, but Fitzgerald's style is lacking, at least to me.


..........As an aside, my dad likes to tell the story of seeing Moore fight here in Seattle in 1958 or '59, when he fought Eddie Cotton. He remembers Moore winning the decision, then pulling a comb out of his robe pocket (gloves still on) and primping his hair in front of the crowd as he went back to the dressing room, smiling and combing the whole way. :lol:
