View Full Version : Who does Cotto need to beat to have a resume....

....better than Mayweather's career resume?
He currently has Mosley, Judah, Malignaggi, Quintana, Torres, Corley, N'Dou who are ranging from very good to ok scalps.
If he adds Margarito.....
Then how many more wins and against whom before his resume is better? A win over Williams would be another very good name IMO.

That guy would have to go undefeated for 6 more years and possibly win a super middleweight title ...

williams, de la hoya, clottey, berto, collazo and a title at 154

good question but don't forget that cotto only has really taken on reputable fighters over the last 3-4 years. torres was a big underdog and nobody knew him before he gave cotto the fright of his life.
compare that to floyd's achievements.
granted, cotto's doing the business since bigtime. but i don't think it's realistic to compare cotto's resume as better than floyd's - simply because people tend to not really be aware of floyd's achievements at lower weights.

Cotto would need wins over Margarito, Williams, and some wins at 154. He will never win titles at 160...so he needs to beat most guys at 147/154. But he's unlucky...because 154 is a fuckin poor division. So Cotto needs to absolutely clean 147, and that won't be enough because it's only one division.

He can become a good welterweight ... but not as great of fighter throughout his career as PBF ...
He would need to clean the division, hit the top dogs at 154, which isn't a lot.. and a win at MW would do him good.

He would probably need to clean up at welter, I'm talking Margo, Willliams, Berto, Clottey etc, take a title at 154 and then beat the champ at 160.

if he loses to Margarito its over ... its very hard to chase 12 yrs of perfection ...
6 world titles, 5 weight classes, beat a reigning champion for his strap ... and have 19 title fights w/o losing --

:nod
He would need like ten more contenders in his resume. And at least two of those should be very well known or "names". All this while keeping and undefeated record or losing maybe just one time.
Forget about jumping through weight classes. I can't imagine Cotto being successful at 160 or 168. He should focus on 147 and try to be a dominant legend (his models could be Monzon, Hagler, etc).

He doesn't need to move up in weight division, he can stay at welterweight and dominate for years to come.

Moving weight is overrated, especially if you're doing it to fight guys the calibre of Baldomir and getting guys from the weight below to move up to fight you there.
I'd rather Cotto stayed and cleaned up WW than moved up and fought a Baldomir standard fighter at 154/160.

good post. floyd will be back. the itch he can't scratch will pull him.

floyd isn't finished yet.

honestly, just keep doing what he's doing. he prides himself on fighting the best and looks like after the Margarito fight will continue to do so. I'm not a big Cotto fan, but damn it i respect him.

Even if Floyd isn't finished yet, doesn't mean you can't discuss whether Cotto will surpass Floyd's legacy as it stands now whilst he's 'retired'
If he comes back, then we can reassess what Cotto has to do to surpass him.

Honestly, Floyd is 39-0...You don't think he wants to hit 40-0 by ending it with a fight with Cotto??? This guy is retiring because he doesn't want to fight anyone else unless its a VERY meaningful fight. He isn't going to fight any mandatories etc...It's either another DLH fight or Cotto for Floyd, and he WILL fight a minimum of 1 more time.

Well, after the De la Hoya fight he said he was gonna retire. Then Hatton insulted him and he came back. Haha.

He retired after the De la Hoya fight.
After the Baldomir fight also?
He didn't retire after the Hatton fight. He said he wanted a break (8-12 months).

For 1 we all know Cotto is for real.
My take on this is this....
Floyd thinks that DLH could beat either Margarito OR Cotto.
Floyd would rather wait to see DLH take on the winner of Margarito/Cotto
If DLH beats the winner of Margarito/Cotto than Floyd would fight DLH and retire as it would spark an interest in the rematch with Floyd/DLH...
If Cotto beats Margarito and then Cotto goes on to beat DLH, Then Floyd would have no choice but to accept that Cotto is the shit and make the fight everyone wants.
If Margarito beats Cotto and Margarito goes on to beat DLH, Then Floyd would say fuck this shit, and fight Ricky Hatton again by murdering the little fucker and retiring.
My friends this is EXACTLY what Floyd Mayweather is going to do :deal

People saying he needs to move up to 154 and even 160 are full of shit. Monzon and Hagler aren't all time greats because they stuck to one division? What about Joe Louis? If he cleans up Welterweight and dominates for a few years, unifies the titles and racks up a good number of defenses then his resume could easily wind up being better than Floyds, but, of course it depends on who he beats.

He definitely doesnt need to move up. With that reasoning, you would be saying that heavyweights would have a hard time achieving ATG status b/c they have no where to go but down in weight, which they wouldnt do.
All he needs to do is unify the division and continue to defend his titles. If he chooses to move up to 154, then he could try to unify that divisioin as well. But again, he doesnt need to do this in order to achieve ATG status.

The point is that a fighter doesn't need to fight in several different weightclasses to be great. Monzon stuck to middleweight, but no one is going to say Floyds resume is more impressive just because he fought at several weight-classes. I'm more impressed by long term dominance of a single weight-class than by jumping up in weight-classes and collecting belts.

at 147 if Cotto beats Margo. there is no comparison as Cotto would have the better resume at that weight, overall though Cotto would have to do more to overtake PBF as far as career resume goes
