There are a lot of Rus guys at some of the lower weights. This took me by surprise.

If you counted all the ones from the former Sovet Union it would look even more dominant. I'm impressed with the amateur programs of Kazhakstan and Uzbekistan as well. Kazhakstan in particular has had its own boxing program for what, a decade? And already it routinely fights to the level of Cuba in international duels and has produced two Val Barker trophy winners-Jirov and Artaev. Thats an amazing accomplishment.

But Kazakhstan traditionally had a very strong boxing program with a lot of their guys winning Soviet championships and boxing for USSR. All of these countries have a developed history of amateur boxing with very solid coaches. It's the Soviet style of sports preparation basically, which was the same school of boxing everywhere. I'm not saying everyone boxes the same - that depends on the coaches styles, etc., but the approach to preparation of coaches and trainers.

Yea no doubt that gave them a good headstart but its amazing to think that Russia qualified 11 boxers for this olympics, the US qualified 9 and Kazhakstan qualified 10

It already is. Cuba is probably going to have a bad year, one of the American Olympians just got kicked off the team so unless that's overruled and he's let back on, they're only sending 8. Russia could, I think, take multiple Gold Medals, with the rest of the team being able to win silvers or bronze. I can see Korobov, Beterbiev, Timurziev (assuming he's healthy), and Vodopoyanov all winning Gold. Selimov as well could win a Gold. That's an insane amount for one team to rake in.

I hope! Who got kicked off the US team and why? Although I believe no team is as strong as Russia right now, there are extremely dangerous opponents in each of the weight from different countries which probably wont dominate as a team, for example, Gavin is a threat to TIschenko who hasn't looked as impressive lately etc. These guys can upset the fighters you mentioned.

Has anyone heard anything on whether or not Timurziev will compete?
