Low blows are illegal. I'm sorry I can't answer this question, I suggest you send an email to Zab Judah.

Run off your fat. If you wanna see your abs, cardio is the key, combined with a healthy low-fat diet. Also don't overdo the ab excersises, make sure you give your muscles plenty of rest.

Stop laying down with serpent seeds and get a topical cream.
I'm a right handed, with very good power and a great chin that's my advantages. Tonight i'm gonna fight a left-handed agressive with more speed than me I think. In defense i'm always in a peek-a-boo styke 'cause i like to approch inside for hit him to the body. But the fact is, i've never faced a lefthanded. So do I play MY game or HIS game?
(i'm agressive too maybe + than him, i throw a lot of punch to the body)
So what the keys?
Keep your front foot to the outside of his and circle to your left. Throw more lead rights rather than the jab.

Judging from your description, you need to be very careful of the counter left of your opponent. You're aggresive and right handed, so he may find alot of openings for his left hand, be sure to keep that in mind the entire fight. Don't be too generous in throwing your right hand, only throw it when there's a perfect opening and try to keep it up at all times. I suggest you slip his right hand jab and work his body with your left hook. Step to the left as much as possible, away from his left. Don't play your usual game, but don't play his game either..just adapt to the situation..adjust your gameplan a bit with the points I've given you. Good luck.:good

I'll save you some time:
"Help! I want to get ripped. What do I do?"
Eat healthy and do lots of cardio excersises. Run your ass off!
"How do I get a bigger back and biceps?"
Being big has nothing to do with boxing but to answer your question, Deadlifts, Barbell Rows and Bicep Curls are a few excercises to get you started..join a BB forum and ask them about it.
"What is the Philly Shell Defense?"
The lead arm (left for an orthodox fighter and right for a southpaw) is placed across the torso usually somewhere in between the belly button and chest and the lead hand rests on the opposite side of the fighter's torso. The back hand is placed on the side of the face (right side for orthodox fighters and left side for southpaws). The lead shoulder is brought in tight against the side of the face (left side for orthodox fighters and right side for southpaws). This style is used by fighters who like to counterpunch.

"I'm muscular but short, should I use the Tyson Peek-a-boo style?"
Not nessicarily, if you like it and it really suits you than you can do it. But don't forget the Tyson style was really aggressive and based on coming forward, you have to be able to take a hard shot and walk through it AND it requires a decent reflex for the slipping part. I would only recommend this style if it really feels natural to you, let you're trainer guide you.
"How do I use the Mayweather shoulder roll?"
The right hand is held normally or slightly higher than normal, the left hand is down around the midsection, and the lead shoulder is raised high on the cheek in order to cover the chin and block punches. The right hand (from orthodox stance) is used as it normally would be to block punches coming from the other side, such as left hooks. From this stance, Mayweather blocks, slips, and deflects most of his opponents' punches, even when cornered, by twisting left and right to the rhythm of their punches. Again this is a style that really has to feel natural to you, and good reflexes are required.

Let them have a good warm-up before the fight, maybe they're starting the fight a bit cold. Fire them up a little and teach them to work the jab in the first, that's good for finding the right distance..even if they can't understand that theory yet, if they work the jab in the first they'll automaticly find the right distance between them and the opponent.

Illegal tactic? Serious? Could I be in trouble if the ref sees by boogered up glove? Will he deduct a point for tagging my opponent with a bogey?

Instead of fucking around, why don't you guys (and Amy), post some of your boxing routines. Do you even box at a gym? How many times a week? Who's your trainer? If the training section isn't solidified the newbs will think this forum is full of people who don't know shit about boxing. So start posting some serious shit.
I train 6 days a week, 5x a week 2/3 hours of boxing and 1x a week treadmill running and overall leg training, finishing with a sauna to take the rest of the saturday and sunday off. My trainers come from a well respected gym from the old school days (Kristalijn..maybe you know it RDJ), and the head trainer was a talented amateur. He has a hard job and gives the training voluntary, he even has to rush from his job to the gym yet he does it every day and he never gets tired. I'm one of the first ones there and the last to leave. I don't know where I'm going as far as boxing is concerned, I'll just see where it takes me. By the way, I got 1 professional training at my gym..[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Make sure you have a good warm-up AND cool-down. Stretching 10 minutes a day helps alot too. If the problems keep occuring, see a doctor.

I suggest you kick in 1 or 2 days of full rest, your body needs it or else you'll get problems in the long run (fatigue, small injuries etc.) Don't underestimate resting, it's equally important as the training itself, especially since you work the weights in an already intensive schedule. Overall it looks good, seems like you're really motivated.
Hi Dennis, I won my first fight By TKO by stoppage of the ref at the second round. But hell man In the first that was like I all forget about my defense, I was choking and the guy's was hitting me all over the face, That was a mess like first round. But in the second, Ive said to myself : fuck that now you open the machine and work to the body. The guys wasnt able to take my punch, I was making combinaision to the body and up to the head and I act like a slugger but i'm angry 'cause I wanted to make good boxe but my defense isnt ready I think or too stressed.
I can thanks my chin and power 'cause I will have lose the fight man, i don't know, my defense was nonexistant, I all forget like, I dont know maybe I was stressed 'cause that was my first fight..anyway He mess me with his jab at the first round lol,
Congratulations man. Don't worry about forgetting things in the ring, as you keep on training you'll automatically improve on this. It takes time before the sport becomes a second nature to you. Look at it from a positive view, you know what your flaws were in the match, you know what you need to improve. So..practice it, spend some extra time in the gym working on points you think need improving. Maybe you should try sparring guys who like to put on a lot of pressure and can take your shots very well, this will force you to defend alot. Or spar a good counter-puncher who will make you pay for every opening you give him. You can also have sparring sessions where you make an agreement that you can only defend and are not allowed to throw punches. And don't forget, as time progresses you'll get more and more relaxed in the ring, which will help your case too. Good luck.:good
I trust you've been working on your jab?:think
Yes. And I thought at 114 it would pay me great dividends since those gals are all midgets, but NO! Stupid electronic scoring, the girl I fought just ran from me the whole time. As soon as I threw my jab out there she'd throw a 1-2 and run away. :fire I'll have video of it soon.

Why the mad face? At least you have more wins than losses..:yep
I think 114 is gonna suit you well if you feel just as healty as you did at 119. You seem to have decent power in your punches so maybe if you get opponents that are the same weight as yourself, you might be able to dominate the fights more, and maybe even score some KO's.:D

I would prefer to have less losses, but hey.
The good thing is that 90% of my match bouts are against girls that walk around at 128-130 so when I get in these tournaments with these gals that weigh 113 their punches don't feel like much. :!: (and they are reeeealy short)

Good, so basically all you need to do now is train your jab and protecting your body.:thumbsup I've got the same luxury, I'm 6'1 and weigh around 153 lbs. at the moment, I can easily make 152 where I'll be able to fight much shorter guys.(because I'm tall and lanky kind of like a white Tommy Hearns.:yep) If you're smart enough to make it your advantage in the ring, you can benefit alot from it. Your timing has to be different with every opponent you face, so if what you're saying is true, it won't matter anyway. You still have to adapt. Training with 16 Oz's is good.

What exercice to be stronger in my shoulder?(or to be able to keep my hands up with 16oz Glove for 15rounds without getting tired???
Take your 16 Oz's (or heavier) and work the heavy bag, when you get tired go through the pain and continue. Basically what you need to do is cross your border and put it further away. Take a pair of small handweights and shadowbox, when your shoulders are burning just continue. Work the speedbag and when your shoulders hurt from exhaustion, continue. No pain no gain. You're the one that decides how long you can continue, you're the one that sets the amount of fuel you have to keep going. Expand your limits. Get the idea?

It looks like a train wreck, two armatures with at least six months of experience and maybe one or two previous Smokers under their belt. Two minutes three rounds with head gear.

I think the most important element you need to focus on is stamina. Depending on your opponent you can adapt and anticipate to anything, but stamina is the thing you don't wanna miss here.
I understand you have little/no fight experience? That means you don't know where your limits are yet. You don't know how to split your energy into the three rounds. So make sure you've got yourself covered in the stamina department. I'm not only talking about cardiovascular stamina, I'm also talking about your muscle endurance.
When is this competition happening? If you have time to prepare make sure you run alot, that will cover the cardiovascular part and it will strengthen your legs at the same time. Also do alot of bag work. Focus on how long you can keep punching before your arms are completely tired. Make sure you expand your limits on this as well. You need to make sure you still have decent power and speed left when you enter the 3rd round. If the fight is around the corner, take it easy but keep busy, sharpen up your technique and make sure you go into the fight fit and healthy.
Also have a good warmup before the fight, you don't wanna go into the first round cold, that will cost you the round so make sure you're ready to go from the opening bell.
Don't go all out in the first round. Measure the distance between you and the opponent with your jab, analyze him but keep busy..try to see his weak points but at the same time keep scoring. Again, be careful with your stamina. Don't go all out in the first, try to win the round as calm as possible, make sure you definitely win the second and go all-out in the third.
The judges probably like (effective) aggresiveness, so try to stay busy all the time, take the initiative and be the dominant force. Work his body a bit but don't focus on it since amateur judges look at head punches much more.
Go into the fight motivated, confident and relaxed, but do not underestimate your opponent. Stay focussed.

Strange..I suggest you read this Wiki info, try some things described in there and if it keeps bothering you see a doc.
There are three basic causes of cramping. One is when you overflex the calf muscle. One is inadequate oxygenation ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) of muscle, where excess lactic acid, produced by anaerobic respiration ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), builds up and puts stress on the muscle. The other is lack of water ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) or salt ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). Cramps from poor oxygenation can be improved by rapid deep breathing, as well as stretching the muscle. Cramps from lack of salt and water can be treated by stretching the muscle, and of course drinking water and increasing salt intake. Pounding on the muscle can increase soreness.
Athletes are at greatest risk for muscle cramps, as excessive exercise can produce poor oxygenation.
Muscle cramps can be treated by applying a soft massage on the cramped muscle, stretching the muscle and applying heat or cold. Heat improves superficial blood circulation and makes muscles more flexible, so some people find that heat is more soothing for muscle cramps than applying ice.
Electrolyte disturbance may cause cramping and tetany ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) of muscles, particularly hypokalemia ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (a low level of potassium ([Only registered and activated users can see links])) and hypocalcemia ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (a low level of calcium ([Only registered and activated users can see links])). This problem can be solved by drinking electrolyte enhanced fluids, after strenuous muscle activity, and supplementing one's daily diet with a multi-vitamin, which contains potassium and calcium.
Muscle cramps may be a symptom of hypothyroidism ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
Eating foods high in potassium ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), such as bananas ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), potatoes ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), and prunes ([Only registered and activated users can see links]), can help prevent muscle cramps.

Hi, I just started boxing and have a quick question. When I first started with a coach a few weeks ago, he was showing me the correct form for all the punches. He is a stickler on turning your hand over as you throw your punch to avoid hand injury. This makes perfect sense, except for the manner he is trying to get me to throw a hook in. Now, I don't want to argue with him or question him since I'm just starting and don't know anything, but I do want to make sure I am understanding him right. I was always of the impression that when throwing a hook, your forearm is paralell to the ground with your palm facing your face or the ground, depending on the distance from your opponent. He has me throwing them with my palm facing away from my face, towards my opponent. I see this as an extension of his persistence in rotating your hand and he wants to overemphasize it to reinforce the idea, but it seems odd to me. Am I wrong about this?

I have never seen someone throw a hook with their palm facing their opponent. Sounds to me like doing that would result in an injury quite quickly.
Dennis

Sounds strange Mongo71..if I were you I'd just confront my trainer with it. Being your trainer and you paying for it gives you the right to ask questions. Just tell him you read/heard that the technique he's teaching is a bit uncommon, then ask him what the purpose is of that version of the hook. I for one am pretty interested in why he teaches to throw a hook that way...for the record, I've been taught to throw it with the palm facing me. Back then, I immediatly asked my trainer why not palm down? He then showed me how that could injure the wrist. But palm facing opponent was never even talked about...My advice just ask your trainer about it and his motives behind that version of the punch. After all, it's just a question about the sport and the technique, you're not directly questioning him as a trainer.;)

Yes, I'd recommend facing the palm towards yourself, for injury reasons. You can easily see how you could injure yourself if you take a look at how the punch lands when the palm is facing down, makes wrist injury risk alot higher...Wraps to put some extra security on the wrist are always a good thing though.

Yes, I think so. I've heard and read about the different methods being teached by different trainers. When I started boxing I threw it with palm down, then I saw some others throw it palm inside and I asked my trainer what's up..then he told me about the wrist injury and that he prefers palm inside.

You're obviously gonna need alot of stamina if you wanna be able to last the full 12, I'd suggest you do ALOT of cardio training..intervals. You should PM salsanchezfan, he's a runner and maybe he can hook you up with a good running schedule and/or good tips on (interval) cardio training. Don't be too hard on yourself in the last week of training though, you need to be fully rested when you step in the ring. Do alot of sparring as well, extra long rounds with like 45 secs. rest in between to put your stamina to the test...when you're closing in on fight night I'd suggest just do normal sessions with 1 min. rest. Good luck.:good

Avoid any activities that put stress on the area of pain, wear a splint, ice it and rest. If that doesn't help see a doctor, because small injuries like that could easily turn into a more severe injury.

I've been avoiding it for a couple months now, and the pain is still there.
It feels slightly better, but I still can't hook the bag.
It feels like my left forearm bone (left arm now) whacks my wrist bone and I don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to do.
Ibuprofen pills do anything?
I am genuinely depressed, I injured my right hand in the manner 7 months ago and it's fairly better but I still can't hook with my wicked manner, and now it happened with my left 2 months ago. I cannot train properly, and it's realy getting me down, please help.
There is no severe breakage or anything like that, I had an xray, and I can do pushups/clap pushups.
My hook form is with the palm inwards, with the palm downwards I can get NO power, whilst with palm facing me I had quite a powerful left and right hook.
It's like the wrist bone on the left/right side of your wrist respectively for left and right wrists hits the bone beneath it in the lower right/left corner of your palm, what the fuck is going on.
Am I not making a tight enough fist? I have some issues with clenching my pinkie in my left hand, but my right is fine.
I am a very hard and dedicated trainer, and competitive person, but I am really getting depressed by my wrists. Should I work on my finger/wrist strength for 2 months and then get back to it?
I can't afford physiotherapy.

Ibuprofen might help, but I'd recommend you visit your doctor before this problem gets out of hand. I don't think you should do any finger/wrist strengthening right now, that might only do you worse. The thing is, this kind of injuries can cause nerve damage and stuff like that, if it isn't properly treated with the advice of a doctor.

Welcome to ESB.:good First of all, you shouldn't do any punching excercises because you will only develop bad habits from that, so that has no use at all. The best thing you can do to get a boxer's physique is bodyweight excersises (for example pushups, situps, squats and burpees) and alot of cardio training to get a low bodyfat %. I'd suggest running and skipping rope for cardio training. Here's a website about bodyweight training, I think that can help you alot.
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
This kind of training will get you athletic and explosive, but not extremely muscled when compared to weight training. You'll definitely get stronger from it though. You can do a search on youtube for bodyweight training as well. I'll help you out a bit by showing you a vid.
Good luck.;)

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some friendly advice.
I bought a 75 pound bag a few months ago. I also bought Everlast bag gloves and hand wraps.
My problem is, when I hit the bag, the knuckle of middle finger on my right hand hurts a lot. I'm right handed and take an orthodox position.
I even tried those Everlast gel wraps, and double wrapping my hands and still that one knuckle hurts bad enough that I can't work the bag as often as I'd like to. Any helpful advice on techniques or equipment would be greatly appreciated.

dennis i go bareknuckle on the bag sometimes. is that bad?
Hi There. I'm new to boxing, joined a gym last week Monday. I haven't sparred yet, so I do a lot of running and practice my right jab (I'm southpaw) all day in the gym. I don't even used my left hand to hit the bag:bart I want to learn the proper way to hit before i go to spar.
My question is: I'm in the gym on Mon, Wed, Fri for 2 hours of training. I run my a** off, and work hard on the bag, but I don't do excercises like sit ups, pull ups, burpees etc. etc.
My plan is to take these excercises at home on Tue, Thu, and Sat.
Am I doing right, or I will soon become overtrained?

I couldn't think of any obvious reason or solution to your problem, so I looked it up:
The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Knuckle pain. There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms.
Diabetes
Peripheral artery disease
Peripheral Neuropathy
Chemical burn
Heat burn
Peripheral nerve trauma
Peripheral nerve compression
Brachial plexus injury
Cold
Cerebrovascular accident
Knuckle injury
Finger injuryI'd say it's one of the last 2...if proper wrapping doesn't help you'd better check in with your doctor even if it's just to confirm there's nothing serious going on.
dennis i go bareknuckle on the bag sometimes. is that bad?
I don't think it's bad, it toughens up your knuckles and the skin. But be careful, the risk on injuries is obviously higher so proper technique is a must. I'd suggest you wrap your hands and even better use gloves, but if it works for you, it isn't necisarily bad.

Don't worry, I'm from Europe too.;) First of all practicing your jab is very good, it may get a little boring but once you step in the ring you can win fights because of a good jab. I'd say you could train a little extra at home, but better keep the Saturday off for now. Training 5 days a week should be more than enough. Just see how it goes and if you have the feeling you can do another day extra just try it, and see how you feel on Monday. The key is to listen to your body. Rest is just as important as the training itself.
Thank you for the advice/help

one question about nutrition:
i'm pretty happy with what i'm eating over the day, except for one thing i always wonder if it's right (especially because i need to lose weight and i'm just not losing enough):
directly after working out in the evening (weight training) i consume red berry juices and a bit later a mush of bananas and zwiebacks. before going to bed i eat (out of tradition) a big portion of special k and milk.
there are tons of opinions on whether to eat late or not, what's yours? and do you think the other food is enough to be considered a dinner and i should spare the kellogg's?

Ok, let's get this straight...you are already losing some weight, but just not enough? If that's the case you should definitely try to cut out the cereals. It's not that I believe in the theory of not eating before sleep, some people do have issues because of it but not weight related. I think it's ok to eat before you sleep if you don't get any problems because of it. It seems a bit unreal to say you will gain more fat that way, after all, why won't your body process the food like it would normally do? Losing/gaining weight is all about balancing the calories you take in with the calories you burn. So in your case, you're probaby almost taking in the amount of calories you burn, thus you need to cut down on the calories just a bit more. So yes, see what happens when you lay off the cereals before sleeping, that's about -350 calories a day which should have some effect on your weight loss, especially if you're already losing some weight, it could be the finishing touch for your diet.;)

Punch yourself out on the heavy bag/speedbag and shadowbox with them little hand weights. Even if the burn is killing you, just keep going. They key is to just expand your limits by pushing yourself to exceed them. To get better in something you must practice that something. Don't do any serious weight training for your shoulders.

Since I started boxing I pretty much stopped weight lifting, doing bench pressing and dumbells and all. Not really because of the old school "weight lifting is bad for boxing" thing, but because I'm already tired from the boxing workout.
I mainly just do pushups and bicep curls now.

Weight lifting isn't really bad for boxing, after all, it builds strength. It doesn't benefit your muscle endurance though, and gaining weight is something you might want to avoid when competing. Bicep curls and pushups shouldn't be a problem.;)

One excersice I like to recomend to my boxers, to do in conjuction with weigheted shadow boxing ...is simple, in the front of the mirror ...punch straight punches with very light weights for 6 rounds, with 30 sec breaks, after you have done your heavy bag work...after 3 rounds of just punching with thelight weights you will be exhausted and can hardly lift your arms, but after sometime of this drill you will start feeling the difference

do you mean throwing a 1-2 as fast as you can for the round? Or just regular speed?

No , never as fast as you can, this will work detrimentally to the work out, ...you need to get at a fight rhythm tempo, and bu the way your stance will be conventional just move forward and backwards, not side to side...remember this excersice is for the arm muscles and shoulder muscles....

Practice it on the bag and in sparring, a good body punch is all about perfecting your technique. Focus on leverage and balance. Speed and power are additional factors that help define the impact of the punch. Don't forget to maintain your defense when body punching, don't get careless. Also, there has to be an opening for body punching. Learn to find/create that opening by putting together combinations ending in a body shot, practice getting your opponent to open his guard. Timing is crucial in body punching. A perfect example would be Hatton's KO against Castillo, where Castillo was leaning to the left a bit when Ricky threw the shot. Perfect timing. I'll show you a screenshot.
Remember, practice makes perfect.:thumbsup

what is a good number of rounds on the bag for an amature fight.
the trainer at my gym has us do 12 rounds on the bags at the start of our session is this good for training for a 3 or 4 round amature fight. Would it not be better to work at a harder intensity for 4 or 5 rounds.

I suggest you keep doing what your trainer tells you to do. Why don't you do high intensity bag work for 4-6 rounds in your free time? I think that would be the perfect solution.;)

Disagree, a body pu cher style is a discipline that reaquires total dedication to this style and follow up....the only way you can trained to be a body puncher and increase your power is all technique and foot work...You ahve to work on a daily bases on your leverage and footwork, and open your stand slightly, keep hour hands high elbow tuck , and do as many excercise to your waite area getting use to use the torque of the rotation of the waiste ands you bend to side to delivery body punches with both hands....a lot of medicine ball drill rotation back and forth, picking the ,medicine ball from the left side of the floor with both hands bring it over your head and putting on the right side, your coach bring it back to the left side and repeat for 10 per side change side and repeat this is a daily excersice for about 4 reps rer side...and then go to the body bag and concentrate on left hook low to the body back and force....

Simple, it is easy to say I want to be a body puncher, but every hard to accomplish..if you do these excersices I recomended you will understans the demands on yhour body .....will and determination is one thing, but if you don;t muscle memory your body for the torque and leverage required for the body punches..then you are not training for success

From a technical aspect you guys basically agree. You are saying body punching is easier said than done. I'd say that is basically boxing as a whole. It is hard enough to learn something let alone put it into action.

I guess, Achilles was correct, on his assesment that we are basically saying the same, all I am saying that it required far more dedication to be a body puncher, since the conditioning is different since you target different muscle area for power and flexibility on your muscle memory

Dennis im fat, what do I do?
Create a healthy diet for yourself and do alot of cardiovascular excercises. Like the others said, run, and run some more. The key is to burn more calories than you're consuming in a day, while still making sure your body is getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates etc. and you're not starving yourself.
Orishaman
07-21-2007, 01:25 PM
Nothing in being fat..the point is that you have recognized it and you want to do something about...that's the most important step...now...
Put yourself on a realistic routine:
1. First two weeks, walk for 30 to 45 minutes at regular pace for the first week, and a brisk pace the second week
2. Start changing your diet slowly, cutting on the grease, deep fried, etc, start getting your salads together, you can do dressings, just moderatly...if you are eating meet, drain the fat regularly and cut the starches and carbs, let your body start burning fat after the carbs runs out...
3. 3rd Week start jogging the same distance you were walking, if you get tire stop and keep walking the important thing is to complete the track that you set yourself when walking the previous 2 weeks..
4. By the 4 weeks you should be able to complete the track jogging at a light to moderate jogging pace...
5. Start excersicing in the 5 week regulary 3 times a week, with easy seat-ups and calistecnic excersices...
Post after you compete this first stage...

what's your guys' opinion on combining strength and condition exercices? would you prefer a schedule with running (day1) and squats (day2) and day 3 for resting or better do it vice versa, day1 squats and running on the second. from my personal experience i always felt better the first way, but then again i always wonder if it's not just subjective. reduced to one sentence the question is:
does roadwork on day 2 (may it be in intervals or regular running) harm the regeneration process of squats on day 1, especially when you're running in the morning while doing the squats in the evening 12 hours before, or do you just lack a bit of power running while your legs are still recovering well?

That;s a such a hard question to answer...since it depends on the metabolism of the boxer..some respond well others not so well...

Depends the target areas you do each day, if you split your workout on muscel groups each day, and take the correct supplements for muscle recovery and ahve a balanced diet..you can workout 6 mdays straight, I do it myself ..at 49...

Ive got a friend who wants to come to my gym. Only problem is hes mega unfit and overweight. Iv told him to get running and skipping and dont worry bout anything else at the mo. Is that the right thing to tell him. I know boxing can get you fit but im already reasonably fit and i can only just keep up and i dont want him to go and be put off if hes really unfit compared to everyone else. Am i telling him the right thing or should i just say come? He said hed work on running and skippin for the next couple of weeks , i said its probably better for the next couple months! lol. The guys at the gym are all really great guys none of them take the piss , bit of banter and that but generally nice maybe he should just come now what you think?

Definitevely not, your foot work for the jab has your body weight slightly on your back foot as you transfer it forward for the jab or even backwards, for the cross your weight foot is the front since your are tranfering the fulll power of the cross...you will be off balance and a target for an upper cut or straight punch

I've been following the guide stickied up in the training section and I really feel that it's working with almost every section of my body i'm just curious if you're supposed to feel it in your abs and midsection. After i get done with the push ups the burn hurts, but after the ab workout I feel nothing in my abs. How do I know if its working and is it supposed to be like that?
For me its compleatly oposite, maby becouse Im more used to do pushups than work on my abs.

Think you miss understand me, he probably could get fitter than me lol. What im saying is do u think he should get reasonably fit first or just go straight into it. I just wouldnt want him to get imbarrased or be put off.
I was sparring and walked into a big right hand, it stunned me and it was well thrown and timed nicley. I felt my head snap back and my neck crack a little, what amazed me was although I wobbled a little I was still able to collect myself and continue...although I was leary of that right and became less carless. The sparring partner was younger quicker and about 20 lbs lighter...plus more skills, my consolation is that i was able to take a big shot like that and still be on my feet and still be aware of my surroundings which gives me confidence as i also landed some good shots of my own afterwards...although i felt that my sparring partner may have held back a little after landing that huge right. My main focus with boxing is the workout and some heated sparring sometimes as i am at an age where a amatuer fight is probably out of the question but I love boxing more than golf and other sports for middle aged guys..am I risking my health or helping it??? I have been doing this for about 2 years and enjoy mixing it up with some of the young ones.

I have a question Dennis.
I try to work out my arms. I want to get a bit stronger. So for the past couple months I have been working out with my biceps, and triceps. Dumbells, and other weights. Lifting. I strech a bit b4 each workout. I usually do it about, 4 times a week for about 40-60 mins.
My question is, is this bad? Im only working out my arms, and not my abs or legs or anything, just my arms. Somone told me that this was bad? He said somthing about "cardio" or some shit. And he said it was bad for me. This true? What happens if I still continue out my workout with my arms, and not anything else? Am I doing something wrong?

yes it is, your body works as 1 unit, when you lift something heavy, you are using your entire body to do it,
look for compound lifts such as bench press, deadlifts, squats and military pressed if you want to get bigger and stronger.

Hello Dennis & folks,
I am a total newbie both in boxing and in the forum. This post stands for a first hello to the community and for the first question.:hi:
I'm 26 years old, 190cm, 100kgs, have been active in basketball for many and practiced some bodybuilding. Then 2 years complete interruption of any sports activities. Now restarting with boxing. I started 2 weeks ago, and now I'm highly motivated, training almost every day with my cousin.
Here my question:
I bought a nice pair of sparring velcro gloves by Green Hill, big and broad, 16oz. Of course, I wasn't able to judge about size in the very beginning and now I feel they are a little too big for my hands. I use 3m handwraps and feel the gloves a little relaxed, especially to the sides. Without handwraps I'm able to take the glove off without even opening the velcro fastener. Do you think this problem can be fixed by using other (longer, broader, thicker?) handwraps or should I consider buying another pair of gloves?

TudorMiron

You should take rest as if you keep going hard than you would not get stronger but weaker. First of all your trainer should tell you what to do. If he doesn't take a sh$t than see a doctor (better sports doctor or "normal" doc will tell you not to fight/train for about 2 weeks at list.)
Now, most likely your trained hard and thats the reason you're ill. Your body may be short of minerals and vitamines, protein balance may be less than perfect etc., etc. Take 3 days off to deal with illness. Take glutamine as well as other supplements (protein to supplement your dayly food intake - you need at list 2g per lb of your body weight), fish oil. In situations with training weakened imune system (as you appear to have) glutamine might be most essential. When you get back to training than I would (If I where you) recomend taking a shake that contains 0.4g of protein and 0.8g of carbohidrates before and right after workout. Or better yet - Surge from Biotest. It will help your recovery a lot.
Hope this helps.

Dude that is the best question in awhile...this is the hardest thing to do as a boxer, train your reflexes because is all related to your ring awareness...you sparred you were uptight and your mind was full of negative taughts...you were "scare" of getting hit....etc...
The first thing I tell a new trainee for boxing is to relax, first thing first .....you have to accept that you will get hit and that it will hurt...endof story...it is boxing not jaxs...understood...Once you accept that then relax relax relax and start understanding the mechanics of boxing the body movement , the tendecy of the body to propel a puch once you start getting these elemets together them you can start having fun...slip bag is the best excersice for reflexes and mitts pads, if your trainer give you good work out with the mitts, you will start understanding the mechanics I am telling...you have to ahve good riong awaresness is a key....

Let me tell you something....6 pack is a gnetic thing and how fibrous your body is........don't put to much weight on it...unles you want to impress your woman....or man...
So im an amateur boxer with a very good jab and very good footwork but not that much power or speed (except the quick jab) and i had my first fight Friday winning by decision with my jab since the guy was shorter and had less reach. Im very good in sparring against smaller guys but when i get in with someone with longer arms i can't get in and place my shots....what should i work on

Boxing is mind over body...he conquering of any negative taught syou ahve on your mind....the total control, not disregard, but control of pain....now that said...
You will probably keep winning against shorter faster opponents in the amateurs because you say you have good footwrk and solid jab...the equalizers for speed..now the fact that when you are sparring with similar heigh boxers you fold boils down to self confidence...trust your skills , your jab and footwork obviously you think they are good since you mentioned it...
If you want to succed in the Pro's you will need to do far more than jab, since if you get a good pro style boxer in the amateurs agaisnt you, he will punish your body, you mightwin but he will punish you andin the pro's he will win clearly...
You need to start sparring with taller and stronger guys andstay in the pocket, don't rely so much on your jab but on movement forceyourself to move laterally against this taller and stronger opponent, only by doing that you will improve you skills and gain the confident your are lacking on your skills against opponents of equal size as you....

Thx a lot:good

Well yes, but infighting is a style regardless of body style, sure the stocky guy will be more suited for infighting, but hell Chico was a great infighter and so was Bob Foster...

Ok guy...you obviously are tense while sparring (I am assuming tht you are doing your roadwork daily and you are in boxing shape), when you are tight inside the ropes, you body will tend to use far more oxygen than when you are relax...it is imperative to relax, and do not tight up...breath in and out slowly and concentrate on your opponent, relax relax relax, you get hit, well it is part of the game relax

Great question...actually both...a good cold shower is good to shock the muscle after a hard workout, specially if you are sore....a cold shower will "expand" the muscle...folow up with a good warm shower will ease the relax the muscle....

Hey mi amigo; I keep having problems with my nerves and getting down on myself the day the day I box. What'd you do to stay cool and stay positive man?

What is a good interval / sprint program for boxing? I'm running 3 miles 3 times a week now, but I want to try something new.

The hardest thing to do is to keep you nerve in check on fight night….I usually stay cool listen to the music that makes me happy, and that keep me on positive taughts…also keep repeating your best time on the gym either training or sparring all the time, when you train you need to be positive and talk positive to yourself..this will replay itself when you are preparing for the fight…it is important that you do that…trust your training and trust yourself…keep telling this to yourself..
