I like Joe, but he's fucked up this time.

He's gone on about fighting Pavlik and how he doesn't want to fight Jones as he's past it....

....and then announces that he wants to fight Jones and not Pavlik :patsch

He's dug himself the hole and jumped in it good and proper.

I think Calzaghe would school Pavlik, but he's made himself look a dickhead here.

He said similar stuff about not fighting Kessler at first too before the fight happened.

RJJ is a legend, Pavlik is not a legend. I think most fans do not give 2 shits whether RJJ is past it.

This is almost as bad as writing it into your contract that you'll fight a guy and then refusing to for years

How bigger hole would that be onourway? Hypothetically, of course...

he obviously seen lockett being punished and thought fuck that

onourway

Well, in that case, the person whose name got written into the contract fought so badly that TV networks refused to show that fight, so the contract theoretically became void.

Whereas the guy in question this time is a KO artist who KO'd a massive puncher, beat up the man at MW twice and is fresh off destroying a stablemate of the man who supposedly wanted to fight him, they're both apparently getting offered good money and TV networks would love it.

So they're not comparable.

You are wriggling your way out nicely, newbies might be convinced

Doesn't quite hold up to scutiny though.

i get the feeling he will fight both. Jones is a tougher fight in my opinion than Pavlik.

on Calzaghe - it's not like it's the first time he has come across as a dickhead.
remember the faces he pulled and his clothes for the press announcement of the Lacy fight?

If Joe Calzaghe want's a gimme fight in the twilight of his career, I'm hardly going to grudge him for it.

Besides, we all know what the revisionists and spinsters would say in hindsight: ' blown up MW...exposed in the 2nd round vs Taylor...who did he actually beat outside of the mediocre Taylor and one dimensional slugger Miranda?'

I wouldn't be too pissed if Joe took the money fight against RJJ, as long as the fight with Pavlik was in the pipeline for his very next bout.

Only problem would be if RJJ put in a good performance and kept it close, for then I could foresee an instant rematch. That would be shit.

Message to Joe: If you do fight Roy, make sure you do a number on him; don't leave the result in doubt before the scorecards are read out. Then get in with Pavlik and prove the doubters wrong. That a boy:good

In fairness, he did say Jones was too old and past it to be a credible opponent a few months back, I'm sure if someone could be arsed searching Youtube they could find the video...

Calzaghe is a ducking Cunt for this he doesn't deserve a good legacy at all.

Dont give me that argument, jesus.

Calzaghe is set for life, he is not some poor little debt wridden kitten. He would earn a great purse against Pavlik, as he did against Kessler, Lacy and Hopkins.

Pur-lease.

He is past prime, so what. He should just retire, or fight for easy money?

He has been moaning his entire career about not being able to get the biggest fights, now he can get them, he fucks off to fight old men for easy money.

He has a great oppurtunity to really enhance his legacy with a win over Pavlik and is being a cowardly cunt.

"Really enhance"?

Let's not go overboard. Pavlik is a solid fighter, but for me and plenty others it doesn't boost him any more than the win over Kessler. He's not Hagler.

And his legacy is mostly set in stone, with only one fight to go. That is common sense. Obviously Pavlik would add more than Jones, but overall its not going to be a deal breaker. There will be people that see him as a great fighter, and there will be the usual lot that see a fighter that fought bums until the last few years. What will be will be.

Disagree.

American fight fans have invested too much hope in Pavlik for that to happen.

Imho, a Pavlik victory is the one victory Joe could achieve that wouldn't be demeaned in hindsight.

But, on the other hand, Calzaghe has never defeated a P4P fighter in his prime.

That's what Pavlik is.

A win over Pavlik definitely would enhance his legacy in that context.

Exactly. I cant believe that people are trying to make excuses for Calzaghe for ducking Pavlik.

He is the big name, proven, prime American superstar name that Joe's resume is lacking.

Whether the Kessler win was better, and he cant trump that is regardless, its still a huge win which looks better on paper, particularly to the Americans.

Should a fighter cease to look for challenges just because he beat the best fighter he could beat?

Jc - RJJ as a last fight does leave a bad taste, beating Pavlik is a great way to go out on a high!

Thing is though, there will ALWAYS be someone he HAS to fight, the list in never ending, Joe needs to know when to call it a day.

He's done that his whole career, he's supposed to be playing catch up now.

Come to think of it, what was the his last fight supposed to be against 43 year old hopkins. Lots of people were saying he should have fought a real live opponent then!

Look most had Joe Calzaghe as too much for Pavlik until Pavlik destroyed his stable mate Lockett. Lockett might train in the same gym and have Enzo as his trainer but he is not JC by a long way. Joe would win over Pavlik a lot easier then he will against an old Jones. I bet Jones would fancy his chances taking a win against Pavlik if the Calzaghe fight was not out there. The reason Joe is fighting Jones is it will be his last fight and it will produce more money. That's it. There is no fear. Joe is done with boxing as a fighter. Good on him I say. Even if he bashes Jones and then fought Pavlik and won you lot would still line up another opponent that he must fight or claim he is not the real deal. Abraham will give Pavlik a tough fight and has every chance of winning. Both Pavlik and Abraham would lose to Kessler. Who beat Kessler last year?

I'm not a huge fan of Pavlic, but he destroys Jones at this moment in time.

Calzaghe is a slimy git.

He moaned for years that the big USA fighters were avoiding him and then they throw themselves at his feet.

He picks 40 year old rusty Jones.

I'm not sure you can yet class Pavlik as a big name US fighter. I don't understand the sudden change of heart though. Joes been talking about fighting Pavlik for a long, long time.
