So my coach at this new gym I'm going to videotapes us sparring so we can see what we need to work on and today I noticed a huge weakness. When fighting biggers guys I tend to lean back when I'm throwing my jab, which makes me really easy to get hit. I haven't done much sparring so I think it's just a psychological thing like not wanting to get hit because I know I don't do it on the bag or mitts.
Aside from just thinking about it and committing to the punch more, can anyone think of anything specific that can help me fix this?
Thanks

Aside from strategies getting you into range which may be getting you to the inside, slipping and such...I would look at working different angles. Say trying to not stand right in front of your opponent, but try to stand to outside of where his jab will hit, either right or left depending on his stance ortho. or southie. and on just a slight angle.
I know a shorter fighter who does this routinely to taller fighters, me included, and it causes us to adjust and makes openings for him.
He essentially is never rightin front, but just slightly off to one side and slightly angled.

Actually...I sorta missed the part regarding you haven't done much sparring. At this point I wouldn't really listen to my advice...but more just get in there and try to be as fundamental as possible. Trying angling now may in fact leave you really open. Maybe bring it up with your coach though as something to think about.
Yea, just go in and try to commit more. I know you don't want to hear that...but it is likely the best advice if you haven't done much sparring.

Ya work your angles and slipping punches. I had the same problem when I first started sparring, once you get comfortable in the ring-you wont be so nervous to take a punch.
