What is the consensus opinion on this subject? Who do most people believe to be the Pound for pound hardest puncher in the history of boxing? Jimmy Wilde? Joe Walcott? Stanley Ketchel? Joe Choynski? Bob Fitzsimmons? Sam Langford? Who do you think should hold this distinction?

If I can make abstraction of talent and greatness, I would simply say Julian Jackson. The most powerful ever.

I can only judge of what I´ve seen and of those it´s Julian Jackson, no doubt.

Choynski is in the top five, without a doubt.

Foster and Hearns leap forth. Wilde. Zarate. Gomez at 122. Naz and Saddler. Arguello. Jackson. Spinks. We all know how to group the Heavies. I find it impossible to pick one but Foster and Hearns do have a good claim.

Ketchel and Jackson fought around the same weight and have very similar KO percentages (Ketchel-54 wins, 49 KO's. Jackson-55 wins, 49 KO's) but I feel Ketchel KO'd the tougher class of opponents, though Jackson looks more impressive on film, mostly because there's no decent film of Ketchel.

I don't think Spink's should be mentioned, honestly.
Foster's far more deserving.

I HUGELY disagree. Have you seen 6 or more Spinks fights at 175? Totally forget Spinks the heavyweight, he went from being a genuine one punch KO artist to bugger all.
The fact remains, Spinks is an enormous hitter at 175. Jeez. His laidback at times lazy style hid his wrath unfortunately, but those who lived the day will know exactly how hard he hit. I think he rivals Foster but Bob was much more stoppage orientated within his own style, particulary early.

I'll go with Joe Choynski. Going off memory of what I read several months ago, he only weighed about 175 and took on all the great heavyweights of the turn of the century: Johnson, Jefferies, Corbett etc.. Jack Johnson, who was KO'd by Choynski in 3 rounds, stated in the 1920's that Choynski hit harder than anyone he ever faced and speculated that he hit harder than Dempsey. If memory serves me, Jefferies and pretty much anyone else who commented on the subject pretty much agreed with Johnson about Joe hitting harder than anyone they faced.

Yeah, every top heavyweight of the day made it quite clear that no one hit them like Choynski.

1. Bob Fitzsimmons (almost everyone who saw him puts him up near the top as a puncher and with several ko's of much bigger men, he seems to be a good choice)
2. Bob Satterfield (rarely went as much as 180 but flattened big fellows such as Bob Baker, Cleveland Williams, and John Holman, among others-another fighter whose power was spoken of with awe)
3. Bob Foxworth (his career ended early because of an eye injury, but some observers, including Nat Fleischer, rated him as the best hitter they had seen)

................I haven't seenmany of those mentioned, so I'll just go with whom I've seen, and it's no contest; Julian Jackson. Never before or since have I seen one who routniely knocked guys kicking with just one shot the way he did. When he landed flush, it was almost like an electric shock going through his opponent's body. I've never seen fighters react that way on a regular basis other than when he landed.

Sam Langford. For a man who started his career at lightweight to clean KO a top 20 heavyweight of all time in Harry Wills shows his remarkable power.

Tragic shame we never got to see the best of Julian Jackson destroyer, Gerald McClellan. From what I have seen of him I can't say I have seen anyone who definitely hits harder.

I see Julian Jackson being mentioned and whilst at 154-160lbs Jackson was an electrifying hitter, we didn't see what effect his punches had on heavier men. The other thing about Jackson is that for many people his signature KO is the one against Herol Graham. The point I will mention here is that no-one really knew how solid Graham's chin was, seeing as he was a defensive wizard for most of his career. It could be that Graham falls into the same category as RJJ; a man who was hardly ever hit clean but when he was he didn't have the mental fortitude to deal with hard shots to the head.
I'm going to say Thomas Hearns, simply because he carried his power from 147 right up to 190lbs. Moreover because Hearns destroyed a truly great fighter with a truly great chin (Duran) whereas Jackson didn't even come close to this.

As a pure puncher as opposed to a great fighter Naseem Hamed warrants a mention here.
He hit like a fucking truck.

There was no chance of mental fortitude coming into play when Jackson hit Graham, he was out cold and I have little doubt that in the same circumstances that punch would knock out pretty much any fighter from 147-160. Whilst throwing a punch Graham was hit full force by a wound up right hook, he didn't have a chance.
I agree about Tommy Hearns though, he showed at 175 that he still had power to be reckoned with. 30 pounds above his starting weight. He is #1 for me.

Forget about opinion, let's look at numbers. With a KO average of 92%, Vitali Klitschko is the most powerful boxer of all time. In their primes, George Foreman and Rocky Marciano had less than 90%.
Thats a terrible way to go about it. His opposition was also poorer then the latter mentioned 2 and much of that KO percentage consists of journeymen and such.

Ever see some of his fights? It's like a man versus boys. He wins purely on physicality and power. A genuine freak.
