View Full Version : Congrats to Macarinelli, but Mbaye-Rees stunk of a fix to me...

Come on, what the fuck was that fight all about? round after round M'baye stood within range of Rees, but wouldnt even throw a jab. He would just stand there, giving Rees a rest while he got his breath back, & even letting Rees showboat for seconds at a time... The amount of times I thought M'Baye could have thrown some leather whilst out of Rees range but just stood there, I hate to say it but it was dodgy as fuck.

In all my years posting here I have never proclaimed a fight to be rigged, but that one looked fixed in my eyes. Something just wasnt right about that fight. Even M'Bayes cornermen werent giving a shit along with the fighter himself, & at the end M'baye was walking around quite happy:huh

maybe I am wrong, but that was one STRANGE fight. Opinions?

I understand what you are saying but once you see the wisdom of Enzo Calzaghe all becomes clear. He is the master

Didnt you wonder though sometimes max why M'baye would just stand there, whilst he was in range of the much smaller short armed Rees & not throw anything round after round? I couldnt get my head around it, especially as it wasnt a fast paced fight as Rees was gassed after about 8 rounds...

M'Baye is a lazy fucker, did you see his last fight? M'Baye also tried to unload later in the fight - there was definite intent in those punches in the last few rounds. It wasn't a fix.

Like I said in another thread, if I were one for conspiracy theories I'd be asking questions as to why a number of members of team Khan were at ringside and looking very smug. Given that it is known that Amir will wind up at 140 sooner or later, and he has speed and reach advantages over Gavin and of course Gavin isn't a puncher at 140. These quotes strike me "I will be a world champion at 21", "I trust Frank to help me get to were I want to be"

Me and my mates watched this and my mates who only really follow thE big names in boxing could not get over the fact that Mbaye was a world champ after that performance, but to be honest he looked crap in his last fight which was quite controversial if i remember - he looked shit to be honest and didnt even seem to care thet he had just lost his title :-(

I agree with one of the other posters who thought Rees looked not in the best of shape, fair enough he got the unexpected win but i actually thought he looked a bit soft around the edges especially for the weight but hey he's the new world champ of a legitimate title so fair play and ALL THE BEST :good

i'm glad you started this thread...i was thinking the same thing during the fight. up until the last couple of rounds mbaye wasn't even trying to use his considerable size and power advantage. the whole situation with someone not even ranked in the wba top 15 lww's getting a title shot and then winning against someone not wanting to fight looks dodgy as fuck.

i'm not saying the fight was definitely fixed cos i don't want to take any credit away from Rees who did well, but lets see who his first defence is against. i sniff a ****** scheme to move khan up to lww so he can win a world title by the time he's 21.

yes...i noticed that. i thought originally it was because mbaye was training at oliver harrisons gym, but he had some french guys in his corner. i wonder how much the wba officials were paid off to sanction this fight...if its all part of the grand khan money-making scheme, there could be a potentially high return for ******.

hmmm...but on the other hand, maybe the fight was not fixed and mbaye is just shit and rees fought a great fight. we'll have to look out for any FW announcements over the next couple of months.

This was not a fix, give Rees some credit for his win!!!!!!

M'Baye has shown this side to his game before, he is a lazy fighter and I think in this fight he came in not motivated and could not go up a gear.

nufc16

thought the same myself. and if you look back at the fight, im certain at the end of the rounds, M'Baye when sat in his corner, kept looking over in ******s direction. If you are getting beat that badly, why the fuck would you be looking to the crowd, you'd be completely fixed on what your cornermen are saying.

Think ****** himself cottoned on that it was looking too obvious as he left towards the end of the fight. Though then again he probably just went to wish macca well, but still, if your fighter is about to win a world title, you'd stay till the end surely?

M'Baye has not exactly been the most marketable world champion, while im sure he could make a mint off of a reformed rogue welshman with an army of vociferous fans.

It was the fact that the jab wasn't even being remotely used by M'Baye that troubled me, even at the end M'Baye seemed hesitant to engage or anything. Would you put it past ****** to fix a fight, I wouldn't anyway.

Why was M'Baye constantly trying to nail Rees with the right hand and hard right hands, if he was going to throw a fight he would not be trying to take Rees head off now would he?

Give Rees some credit for his win, this bull is tarnishing his win.

It may or may not have been but there's really no answer for one of the biggest non efforts in a title fight since Tarver fought Hopkins. I don't think being lazy or unmotivated cuts it, possibly overtrained if anything.

That was by far the most pathetic fight iv ever seen. M`baye is a world class operator and iv seen him many a time on Eurosport.Theres no way in a million years a domestic bust like Ree`s should have won a fight like that.M`baye simply did nothing. It was the most disgusting performance iv ever seen. And if the fix wasnt in ****** should drop him immediately.Whats even worse was that this was for one of the 3 major world titles. That is utterly shambolic.Ree`s isnt even remotely close to world class. As soon as he gets in the ring with a REAL world title operator he gets canned.Ree`s has no business at 140 and should have stayed at featherweight. His record although padded and mildy impressive as he is unbeaten has ZERO names on it.I dont believe his even contested a domestic title?!?!?!?

As someone said, is his last fight M'Baye looked equally bad. Plus at the end of the fight it was obvious M'Baye was trying to take Rees out. I think it was a case of M'Baye underestimating Rees, and also because Rees had never done 12 rounds he probably thought he could wait till Gavin ran out of steam, and just waited too long.

The WBA have pulled this shit loads lately, Bumdine and Sturm both fought nobodies in their recent defenses. The funniest thing is, not only had Rees never fought for a domestic title, he had never fought at 140 or fought a 12 round fight. Its really strange how someone who has never fought a name fighter, never fought for a domestic title and never fought at 140 mysteriously gets a world title shot:?

I predicted this a while back. (Khan to fight Rees) :nono

Rees fought the fight of his life and what particularly impressed me and others around me was the hand speed, work rate and will to win. M'aye clearly had a hard time hitting Rees and the Calzaghe gameplan worked a treat. :good

We have to be realistic here, Rees is the WBA champion of the world.

I would be even more surprised if Rees manages to win his next fight.

Who next??

Witter - Unification
Hatton
Khan

If I was his team I would be chasing one of the BIG money fights above and not the mandatory against Kotelnik.

Not, not a fix, the dude was over-rated anyway, he was shite i n his last fight as well. Well done to Rees, he gave him all the trouble he could handle. Mbaye, looked disheartened after 4 rounds and I knew it was only a case of keeping it going and Rees would be champ, must admit thought Rees would run out of steam and get caught late on, all credit to the wee man. Maybe now Calzaghe will get some credit for producing good fighters, the guys been getting stick from certain parties for years about his lack of experience, just goes to show you. Well done the Welsh boys:thumbsup ****** will be loving it now, whats the chance of Rees v Khan, he will see it an easy win for Khan but you never know cause Rees is a speedy wee guy, and he slips punches really well. It did look very strange indeed, he simply could not or would not
throw anything menacing at Rees and whilst you can give credit to Gavin for his performance, that was not a performance worthy of an area champ from M'Baye, let alone a world champ

Will throw my two penneth in re conspiracy, how about this one

Rematch in Wales on the undercard of Calzaghe/Kessler in November.
This will sell now as for a proper world title, will be reasonably cheap to finance, revenge angle for M'Baye and good ticket sales for another Welshman on the bill.

And there's more

Fwank keeps the title, for either Khan to fight the winner say April next year, or as mentioned a nice easy one for Ricky at some stage.

Fun this

i do give rees credit, even though something looks a little dodgy. the fellas done well. first 12 rounder, first fight at lww and now he's the WBA champion of that division.

he did what he had to do with the fighter in front of him...its not his fault if anyone else had a different agenda and if mbaye wasn't coming to win.

but does anyone seriously think he would be able to compete with a real lightwelterweight out there? i don't just mean witter or hatton, but even the top domestic lww's like lynes or bami?

we'll see who he faces in his first couple of defences...no disrespect to Rees, but i do smell an overlaying plot here.

Kotelnik's the WBA No 1 contender.

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

He's decent but he barely does a thing early and mostly covers up and puts on little pressure like with M'Baye and Witter and he's slower too.

Happy to go on record now that if Rees fights Kotelnik he will get beat comfortably unless the judges are told otherwise.

The Ukranian is an underated boxer and his power whilst not that impressive against the top guys would in my opinion be too much for Rees. Even if not a stoppage, cannot see Rees winning 6 rounds against the German based fighter. If Kotelnik does step aside I think we have our answer to this ongoing debate.

If not its

Kotelnik by ko around the 7th

We will have to agree to differ on that Max, not sure he is that slow but can see where you are coming from, he is for me a bit of a perfectionist and sometimes thinks too much and looks to land quality shots whilst not taking much risk, not the most exciting I agree but fairly effective at times and would certainly be against Rees.

Thought the Witter fight was a lot closer than yourself and actually agreed with the two judges who gave it just by the one round to Witter if memory serves, although he did lose that fight as you correctly say.

Thought he won the second M'Baye fight, did not see the first one.

Be very interesting to see what Fwank and Gavin do for there first defence, I am going for M'Baye on Nov 3rd Calzaghe bill if they can pay Kotelnik enough to stop him demanding the match, but could his team perhaps argue a mandatory as first defence is a bit much.

Dont let Mbaye poor/pathetic performance take away from Rees' win. nobody knew how good Rees is and in fact we still dont know, but Mabye definately was trying for the KO late on. I dont see any fix.

What I saw was a guy who clearly wasnt motivated for the fight, who had been out fo the ring for a hell of a long time and didnt expect Rees to be as competitive as he was. Also he wasnt a very good champion to begin with. Yes ofcourse the other champion would probably KO Rees, but thats not the point, the point is nobody thought he could beat Mbaye for the WBA title and he did! FAIR AND SQUARE!
