Just watched a clip of Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour on youtube and he says Alexander Alexseev might take on Banks in his next fight with the winner fighting Enzo Macarinelli for the vacant WBO CW title. Anyone else heard anything about this?

It's mentioned at 7.15 of this clip:

Bunce said that? That's some news.

Banks is a carefully matched next generation Kronk fighter with a big punch and bad chin IMO.

Alexeev, to me, will go on to be the main man at cruiser. A brilliant fighter.

Maccarinelli vs either of those sounds tough. I'd think Enzo could beat banks but if Alexeev can get by Banks he'll keep improving and should have way too much for Enzo.

This would be a good entertaining fight. If this does come off, it could very well be the two future stars of the CW division facing off relatively early in their careers.

As much as I like Banks, Alexeev is a freak.. I see him winning the bout but Banks would have his spots

Yeah, Alexeev is brilliant. He could go on to be the #1 p4p. That's tough for a cruiser to achieve, but Evander Holyfield was the p4p #1 for a short time, around 1987. While I don't think AA can be a heavyweight, he can do great things under 200-pounds. The guy moves beautifully for a big man, has great punch variety and is a southpaw to boot. Very hard to beat.

Looks strong but pretty typical stand-up Euro, fighting off his back foot. Is he any better than Huck or Frenkel?

He's not typical. He moves side to side well. He's accurate. Throws good combos. Very hurtful puncher and an excellent thinker in there.

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinellli may not be able to fight for his old title straight away.

In the latest WBO rankings, Maccarinelli is at number three, behind American Jonathan Banks, and Uzbek Alexander Alexeev. Those two are set to fight for the vacant title after incumbent champion David Haye moved up to heavyweight. However Maccarinelli should get first crack at the new champion. The big-punching Welshman lost a shoot out for the unified cruiserweight world championship when he was stopped in two rounds by Haye in March.

But, having suffered only his second career defeat, he says he is confident he can become a world champion again. The 27-year-old Swansea fighter returns to action on July 19 at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre in a 10 round fight. Audley Harrison tackles Martin Rogan over 10, while Matt Macklin is also on the bill in a 10 rounder.

Banks is an excellent amateur fighter and one of the last few true Kronk gym fighters. He is also more seasoned than Alexeev in the pros, having fought the better opposition.

I can see him pulling an upset over Alexeev, though I wouldn't put any money on it.

Alexeev vs Banks with the winner vying for the WBO title is ONE HELL OF A FIGHT! :good :good :good

Correction, I see that Banks vs Alexeev will probably be for the title itself.

IMO both fighters beat Maccarinelli.

as good as he may be, its pretty difficult to achieve p4p status whilst fighting in one division against none-noteworthy opposition. so unless a whole bunch of superstars appear in the cruiserweight division to defeat, or he manages to move up to HW, he will not be p4p number 1.

he could dominate the cruiserweights for a few years though. unify the belts perhaps.

Banks will not last 6 rounds. Another American hype job.

This fight would be great for the WBO title, I hope it happens soon. Let Macca stay as the mandatory.

alexeev is a monster,he would beat em both. he has an excellent amateur career,he only lost to odlanier solis very close by points.

he is far better than huck, frenkel, hernandez and all the other ones.

If he dominated it for a few years and unified, he would at least be in the top 5 or 6 fighters P4P.

IMO he is too small for HW but he is one of my favourite cruisers out there. I'll cheer him on vs Banks but it will be no easy feat.

It's a very dangerous fight, but I think Alexeev will win & go on to beocme the top man at cruiser.

Banks is apparently going to fight on the Wlad-Thompson undercard. Opponent not yet named.

Huck is a greenhorn who still has to learn one or two things before he can successfully compete with the top fighters of his weight division.
Frenkel? A young talent with a good punch, but still untested.

Alexeev has a proven track record at the amateurs. He was Solis' great rival then.Their last encounter could have gone either way.As far as I can remember Alexeev lost that fight to Solis 18-20(amateur point system).Alexeev brutally knocked out Viktor Zuev.
Zuev won silver at the olympic game where he knocked down and beat Devin Vargas on his way to win that medal.Zuev is also a hot favourite to win gold at the upcomming olympic games in China.
Alexeev is the real deal.He is without any doubt the most dangerous banger at cruiser at present, and probably one of the hardest punchers of all weight divisions.
Damn! He is truly an exceptional fighter, augustus. He would brutalise Huck in 3 or 4 rounds and give Frenkel a lesson in boxing.
Banks ? A talented fighter, but totally out of his shoes in a fight against former Russian amateur star Alexeev IMO.
I would love to watch Alexeev take on Cunningham or Wlodarczyk.I bet my house that neither Cunningham nor Wlodarczyk would be able to go the full route with the murderous banger from Russia.

Good post, Odo, wasn't all that familiar with Alexeev's amaeteur pedigree. How do you think he'll be moved as a pro? Banks would present a significant step up considering his handful of pro fights.

Alexeev by knockout.
