la-califa just started a thread concerning Virgil Hill, and it made me think of this match-up.
Hill was outboxed by Hearns, who in turn lost to Barkley by decision. The only time in Hearns career that he lost in that fashion.
Would Barkley have been able to do the same to Hill? Was Hearns victory over Hill irrelevant to this match, and his loss to Barkley has no effect on how you see a Hill versus Barkley fight?

im a big fan of iran barkley, he's one of my favorite fighters. but i dont think barkley could get a shot damaging to hill.
barkley loss some boxers with good legs like henry maske and michael nunn
i dont think hill could hurt barkley at all but hills good legs would carry a very convincing decision in 10,12 or even 15, hill was always in great condition.

I think a prime Hill comfortably outboxes the best version of Iran Barkley. Of course, Iran was relentless and had a dangerous punch which would always make him a danger, but Hill generally handled big hitters fairly well and was very scientific when he wanted to be. I never particularly found Hill to be an exciting fighter to watch, but I do respect him for his ability to box his way out of trouble.
Virgil Hill W12 Iran Barkley.

I'd pick Hill as well. While his competition wasn't terribly demanding during his title runs (the noteable exception being a rejuvenated Hearns) he was a pretty good boxer with good all-round skills and had a tremendous jab. He was also as tough as they come and conditioned to go the distance in his sleep.
I rate Barkley, but the quick boxers gave him some trouble. I think quicksilver would be landing that jab and controlling the action for most the fight, with Barkley having some decent moments but just not enough of them to threaten Hill on the scorecards.
Hill by decisive UD.

Hill was better than Barkley and he would outbox him and win an easy UD. Stylewise this would be easy for Virgil.
