View Full Version : Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe
Who takes it. Bernard said he would like to fight Joe next, and hell why not? He has just beaten two of the best southpaws in the game (well Tarver was at least, till he met Bernard), and so why not try for the triple crown?
I think Calzaghe would be a hell of a challenger. I can still see Bernard taking the decision, but something tells me it would be a controversial one.

I think Calzaghe may be a bit too busy for Nard at this point, but it would be very close and go either way.

Thats Joes best asset against Bernard. But I wonder if Hopkins could offset his tempo with his use of angles, defensive mastery, and slightly questionable tactics..:think

Good combined age for this fight

It seems everyone is hell bent on Hopkins and Calzaghe fighting. But, even if Kessler beats Joe?
I would hope that Kessler and Hopkins would hook up if that was the case.
But, as per the poll Calzaghe UD.

In the unlikely event that Kessler somehow manages to beat JC (hand injury) or summin like that, there's not a chance in hell that b-hop would fight kessler. If that scenario plays out maybe we'll see Hopkins vs Taylor 3 ?

Hopkins has avoided Calzaghe for good reason. He doesn't think he'd win

As sure i am that Hopkins would win against Joe as sure i am that Kessler would beat Hopkins. It´s a styles thing.
Could you explain that? If anything, stylistically, id say Calzaghe would have a much better chance than Kessler.

Read above, i already wrote it in that thread.
You didnt say anything about why Kessler has the style to beat Hopkins?
Taylor has already showed that you can beat Hopkins on the judges scorecards by just being busier than him, Hop doesnt throw alot of punches whereas Calzaghe throws loads.
Obviously, Hop has factors which give Calzaghe problems. Calzaghe can be open to counters, particularly early in the fight, and Hopkins is the master counterpuncher. But Calzaghe's style does allow for close rounds to go to him just based on activity.
Calzaghe would set a high pace and keep it going for 12 rounds id say he would probably win 116-112/115-113 on the judges cards, I wouldnt be surprised though if he got robbed by GBP judging.

I love Calzaghe but just like I said in the Winky fight i just can't pick against Hopkins, he's too clutch.

Bernard is way too physical for Calzaghe, if Sakio Bika could make Calzaghe look bad imagine Bernard...
Bernard will tire those arms in clinches and hurt Calzaghe on the inside. I think Calzaghe is taylor made for Bernard.

Joe Calzaghe made Joe Calzaghe look bad in the Bika fight because he tried to brawl him in the first half of the fight in eagerness to please his new HBO paymasters. Once he settled down and started boxing smartly, he was much better and streets ahead of Bika. Joe wouldn't make that mistake against a Bernard Hopkins type. As to the outcome... I think it's a genuine 51/49 fight.

I've been nothing but a Calzaghe hater over the last few years but I think if they fought in 3 months, Calzaghe wins.
I'll take Hopkins to win this one

You know i have the feeling Hopkins is Calzaghe´s kryptonite. Everything you need to beat Calzaghe Hopkins has. Good right hand to which Joe is most vulnarable to, infighting abilities and ring generalship. I could see Joe coming forward swarming him while Bernard counters him with his right and then goes in to clinch and rough him up in there. He would make Joe look bad and pull out another victory.
Wow, talk about wanting to change my mind in under a minute.
Good post Tobkhan!

sakio bika gave calzaghe problems with his dirty moves and his just an amateur when it comes to dirty moves imagine what hopkins would do with his 'accidental' headbutts and low blows.

JC beats X and VW beats 'em both.
It's not a styles thing..
It's a skills thing.
Kessler has 'em. X and JC don't.

That people in this poll are favoring unheralded JOE CLAZAGHE over Bernard Hopkins is really nothing short of laughable.
The Calzaghe fanboys that emerged after Calzaghe whipped the overhyped Lacey is an aboslute marvel~
Hopkins just beat a superior fighter in Winky; the only difference in a fight with Calzaghe is that Joe don't make it to the final bell.
Calzaghe is inexplicably overrated!!

Stop pointing at the Bika fights - Bika was a lot quicker than Hopkins would be and when Joe settled down and stopped trying to blast him out, he boxed very nicely and was 100% in control after that. Joe wouldn't be so reckless against Hopkins. I still think Hopkins has a good chance of winning this fight, but not for the reasons you've suggested.

People have to get real. Hopkins will be 43/44 by the time this fight is made. His last 2 wins were against a past it Tarver who was never anyhting more than a Clinton Woods level fighter and against as Winky who was at a ridiculous weight for his style of fight. Hopkins wins were impressive, but do they suggest he could beat an unshot Calzaghe. No, JC will not be physcially beaten by hin, he overpowered Lacy in the tight work,a nd he offers far more offensively than either tarver or Winky.
P4P it is a intriguing fight, but at this stage it is a straight forward powints win for JC, unless he is shot, if not he sets a pace that Hop can not function at and wins a clear decision.
Dawson, Kessler also beat hopkins at this stage, his age makes that an certainty.

i think it would be a great fight Calzaghe is class unlike what many of my fellow americans seem to think
but i also think hopkins would counter alot of joes combos and end up winning a tight MD

JC wins because of his superior stamina. If he fought Nard when they were the same age, I'd take X by UD.

I'm sure there's a scientific formula here
X43 + JC35 = JCUD12
However if:
X35 + JC27 = XUD12 or XTKO
The only constant being X - JC = 8 which as a consequential variable is mutually exclusive but coincidentally the round JC stops MK in.

Some people like you just never learn. :patsch :-(
Same fucki'n arguement with Winky outworking Bhops. What happened?
Common sense . . . you don't expect a 42 years old Bhops to be slugging with anybdoy at this point . . . do you realize that? Bhops will not stand and trade or commit he'll be running around and clinch once JC comes too close. In as much as I HATE IT, same shit will happen here. JC can't use his work rate against Bhops because he'll be punching all air al night.
Bhops by decission.

Calzag. Too much handspeed and too late in BHOP's career. Calzag is bigger, faster, and more versatile than Winky. Totally different fight.
Calzag offsets Hopkins pretty much all night en route to a clear UD.
