Was looking at this page of the white hopes from the teens and twentys last century, and remember seeing the picture of mcCarty dead in the ring after recievintg a light punch and his manager with his head in his hands as people tried to revive him,i heard it was either heart failure,or he had broke his neck years before and it was only a matter of time before something bad happened.

Any way the article there says he may have beat jack johnson and won the title,he was 6-4 and 205 so was a big strong guy,who by all accounts threw hard punches and was very accurute, any one have any info on him,i heard the draw on apr 14 in his first year of fighting 1911 could have also been a loss and may have been from the one and only joe grimm, who did not win to many,so any way does any one have any info on this guy, could he have been a great?

I read that Mcarty had been thrown from a horse prior to his fight with Pelkey and his demise was attributed to the injury he sustained from this.Pelkey was nothing special.

Pelkey was nothing special.

Pelkey was looking rather promising before he killed McCarthy.

That fight might just have eliminated the two best white hopes.

I think Smith and Palzer were both better than Pelkey the only name of any consequence on his record , prior to the MCarty fight was a past it Tommy Burns, and that was ruled a draw.

I've posted that before on here, I think, but there's some good stuff on McCarty and his death on that page, as well as there being a little bit more on page one of the newspaper.

I tend not to think of Smith as a white hope because he was not a product of the white hope campaign.

Jim Cofey was a prety decent win at the time. I think that McCarthy Pelkey would have been a showdown between, what apeared to be the two most promising white hopes (no hindsight please).

Well Smith was "crowned" "White Champion OF The World",not that he set much store in it,he didnt fancy his chances with Johnson too much, when asked a bout a possible match with his onetime employer he said",Johnson will wait ,and the longer he waits the better". I think Al Palzer was possibly as well regarded as Pelkey, but I wouldnt argue if you wanted to remove Smith from the equation.Pelkeys win over MCarty is similar to Carnera's over Schaaf,it will be forever tainted by the death of the opponent .I agree pelkey went to bits after this tragedy and who can blame him,but I dont see anyone of note on his early record,Coffey was so- so ,imo.

Luther Mccarthy was a helluva fighter. him and jack dempsey would have been having trilogy wars in the late teens, he may have dethroned jack johnson by 1915-1916, what a waste of talent.

I wrote about it before in the 'this day in history' thread.

1913-05-24
A meeting of two "white hopes" ended for white heavyweight champion tragically. After only 2 minutes of fight, a blow under the heart left Arthur McCarty unconscious, and 8 minutes later he was proclaimed dead. It was thought at first, that the death was the result of a punch rupturing an artery, that pumps blood to the heart, but an autopsy disclosed it was caused by dislocation of neck, which ruptured the spine cord. This, most probably, happened half a minute before the knockout, when McCarty's head jerked backwards violently from a hard punch, but the effect was visible only after another 30 seconds.
