View Full Version : Bonavena to Ali - "You big chicken"
fists of fury
06-20-2007, 05:12 AM
Remember the press conference between Ali and Bonavena, when Oscar became proabably the only man to beat Muhammad at his own game?
Bonavena: Why you no go to the army?
(Ali looks at Bonavena with disdain)
Bonavena: You big chicken.
Bonavena: Chicken! You big chicken! (Makes "ckicken" sounds) Chicken!
(After a few moments of silence)
Ali: Did you cut your hair? I'll cut your hair.
(Oscar had landed in trouble with Argentian boxing authorities about his long hair)
Bonavena: Cut my hair?
Ali: I'll cut your hair.
Bonavena: Cut my hair?
(Someone in the crowd says something to Ali)
Ali: Well, he never should have started talking - not with Muhammad Ali.
Bonavena: Clay.
Ali: What?
Bonavena: Clay.
Ali: It's Ali.
Bonavena: (Laughing) Clay.
Ali: You'll call it when the fight comes off.
Bonavena: (laughing) Clay (laughs again)
Ali: (Getting flustered) I...you...you'll call it when the fight comes off!
Bonavena: Clay...Clay...Clay...(laughing)
Ali: (looks to crowd) Please! Tell everyone to get to the theatres, I have
never had a man I wanted to whup so bad!

Ali played the straight man to Joe Louis a couple of times apparently, though I only have the trancript for the once. I actually think he could be thrown pretty easily in these type of situations if he gets dragged out of his comfort zone.

He didn't won that conversation, he just made a fool out of himself.

Not really. Just continually saying "clay" "clay" "clay", isn't exactly ownage. He basically took Terrell and Patterson's line, and just kept saying it.

And he was pretty succesful with it. He merely needed to say 1 word to piss Ali off and having him not able to come back with something good in return. Efficiency at its best.

and it wasn't him being nice/polite , just honest . Frazier couldn't beat Bonavena and Ali beat him better than any1 else . But that was d expected thing due 2 size considerations . But then it's 1 of d fewest times that Ali managed 2do d expected . And even in this case imagine what Foreman would have done if he was in place of Ali .

Yes, and refreshing honesty from Ringo..usually fighters pull this bullshit that the guy who didn't beat them badly, i.e., the guy who they looked good against is better than the guy who owned them. "The guy who just staggered me is a harder hitter than the guy wgo decked me..who put me on my ass",..that sort of shit, like Norton calling Ali "stronger" than Foreman...at least Ringo was tellin it as it was about Ali..saying that Frazier "no ween you"........of couse, we know that Oscar was full of shit about that FOTC, cause Frazier did indeed "ween" Ali.

Red C,
One thing about Oscar Bonavena,,,,,,
I did get to see him in person, in New York City back in 1972.
Though he had a thick-body,,,,, he was really not that big. Maybe a shade over 5' 10" and about 210 lbs.
He did have broad shoulders, a thick-neck, massive arms and a thick trunk,,,,,,
He resembled 'a mason or brick-layer',,,,,, or an early 1970's football 'fullback',,,,,,

Ali: Now I'm really angry!
Bonavena: You hungry?

Lets give Oscar some Kudo's,,,,,,,,,,,
When he took on Muhammad Ali, he came in to that bout in very-good condition.
At age 28, the 5' 10" 'Argentinian Bull' was 'a-trim-and-ready' 204 lbs.
And, he was no 'bum in hibernation', the guy was an active fighter with 7-bouts in the
previous 12-months, and was rated the #3 Heavyweight by Ring Magazine.
After the fight, the scoring was a little unbalanced, with Ring Magazine scoring it
10-3-1 for Muhammad Ali, but many at Ringside including (Dick Young, New York Daily News)
had it much closer at 8-5-1 for Ali.
Round 9,,,,,,An unbelievable round, with Oscar, after getting pounded and staggered during the
middle of the round,,,,, nails Muhammad Ali with a short left hook at the 2:32 mark, and has Ali
out on his feet as he wobbles back to the ropes. Oscar tries, but couldn't find one more big hook.
Interview with Joe Frazier after the fight; 'I fell asleep after the 7th Round. It was the dullest fight I ever saw.'

Much smaller than Ali , but u ignore it like every other fact , don't u ?
Strong proposition 4 any1 ? not even during his own era .

Oscar Bonavena
Ring Magazine,,,,,,General Analysis (1970)
Oscar is a 'big heavyweight',,,,,,,and usually fights between 205 and 210 lbs.
Clearly, Oscar is one of the 'strongest' heavyweights on the boxing scene today.
His strength, is the ability to get inside and wear down his opponents with constant pressure.
His hard clubbing punches do take their toll on his opponents, as they numb their body and arms, preventing them from making a late-charge in the fight.

Oscar Bonavena had suffered '6 Knockdowns in Heavyweight bouts.
'Once' by Zora Folley 'I'..........{2/26/65}
'Once' by Jose Giorgetti..........{3/12/66}
'Twice' by Jimmy Ellis..............{12/2/67}
'Once' by Lee Carr.................{4/20/68}
'Once' by Zora Folley 'II'..........{7/6/68}
* Oscar was issued a 'Standing 8-Count' in his bout with Santiago Alberto Lovell, on 12/13/69, in Argentina.
'Ringo' was never floored by 'Smokin' Joe Frazier,, in 'two bouts' and '25' rounds of boxing
