For not taking this fight seriously. If he beat Hopkins in convincing fashion he would have been considered the #1 best fighter today! Instead he came in underprepared against the best fighter he ever faced. That whole training in Vegas is bullshit, he should have been up in the mountains isolated and training hardcore for this. The key for him winning this fight was using his normally high work rate to win the rounds on activity and you cant do that if you come in fat.

I hate seeing my favorite fighters loose.
Kostya, Wlad, Morales, Lacy Ive all had to watch them get their asses kicked. Winky was the only one left that was consistant and I could count on.

If Winky trained "hardcore" for this fight he would have scaled in at probably 158 pounds and gotten pummeled because of the weight difference.

He wasn't going to beat Bernard even if he trained harder. It was a difficult matchup for him, probably the worst he could face. He got his jab off early, but by the end of the fight he was just throwing wild punches, because Bhop had him figured out by like round 7. I don't think he'd ever beat Hopkins. And this is no disrespect to Winky, Hopkins is just too big and crafty for him.

You would be surprised how much a few headbutts, a few low blows and other Hopkins type "crafty" shit would change the fight.

Wright was ill prepared for it and chose to whine instead of do something about it.

Not saying he would win but he would make it closer.

No matter what training Winky does, Bhops simply has his number. He looked bad because Bhops made him looked bad. Style wise Bhops will never allow Winky to play his game plan. Winky never had a chance to counter because Bhops won't trade he'll run and dish out 2 or 3 punches then clinch and just wait for the ref to separate them. Winkly was completely taken out of his comfort zone and was forced to chase Bhops swinging which is not his style.

I think there might be more to his leg problems than just age. Looked like knee problems to me.

Its not about looking good.
Its about putting yourself in the best possible shape to win the fight. Not that you have to.

Shooting a LB or a headbutt and risking losing a point to win the fight and make a point.

Wright was ill prepared and should be called on it.

The guy always comes in 100% and ready to fight. How do you guys then figure out that Winky was ill prepared this time?

. . . I guess because he wasn't able to do what he used to do with his previous opponents. That's why I'm saying because Bhops made him look bad. :yep

No its not that.

He comes 100% all of the time except when he is moving up in weight and figures that just running less or whatever will do the trick.

How do you explain that he ran out of gas like that against Hopkins and not against Taylor who was the bigger guy?
That's right cause the weightlimit is lower so he had to train harder to get down there.

Wright did not move up in weight correctly (see Hopkins vs Tarver for an example of moving up correctly)..

Oh okay I'm getting you now . . . you are saying that 170 is not his weight class? :yep

Not if he comes into it like that :deal

Jeez it COULD have been if he trained correctly and tried to figure it out.
He would then SEEM like a better 175 guy.

Since he wasn't you see the result of it.

Well I don't know . . . in my view . . . he was simply taken out of his game that's why he look and came out like that. But give him another 170 pound opponent and you'll be thrilled by the guy again.

I want to see him fight Calzaghe. JC would be a perfect opponent for him.

Wright's problem has been one that has been waiting to be exposed for a few years. He's just high jab output and tight guard. I noted that he tried other things in this fight, and that's when he got countered.

He did well when he went back to plan a, often catching BHop with the jab (I was surprised by this though, I thought a boxer would need a bit more complexity to his game than that). He lacks a plan b that he is able to properly execute, but his plan a nearly always works.

for me there were two points in the fight, and that's the real difference between them: BHop has that little extra that makes him one of the greatest fighters to lace up the gloves, whereas Wright is just (but it's still an impressive 'just') one of the outstanding boxers of his decade.

Dont really like any of your fav fighters.... except morales, he is my 2nd fav fighter of all time after ali.

Ironically, I quite like calzaghe, hopkins & hatton, the men who beat them but I know how you feel regarding morales, his last 3 fights have left me gutted, there isnt any other fighter who can blend the technical skills with the warriors heart like erik could, Im hoping for a miracle on aug 4th.

What most fail to realize is that Hopkins would probably still beat anyone in the world at 170. Winky is still a great fighter and should be fighting at 160 not 170 far above his best weight. Hopkins is a defensive genius and probably the best boxer in history at making you fight his fight. The way Hopkins took Winky's jab away so early in the fight was a thing of beauty that no one else has been able to do. Winky tried and I do believe trained hard but Hopkins was simply the better man. No shame at all in losing to a top 30 ATG especially fighting above your best weight. Props to Winky for taking this fight he'll be back.

With proper nutrition I don't see how that would have happened. Hopkins trained hardcore vs. Tarver and gained over 15 pounds.

Winky lost because Bernard is the better fighter, period.

Man winky was in over his head against bernard. It was a mismatch from the beginning. The size difference punctuated that.

I think all the fight proved is that (1) Bernard is the better fighter and (2) Winky probably doesn't belong at 170.
