View Full Version : Best performance by a "one-armed" (injured) fighter

The best I've seen is Tyrell Biggs fight Jeff Simms with a broken collarbone and only his left hand working from the 2nd round onwards. This was back in 1986.
The fight is actually up on youtube, just type in "Tyrell Biggs Jeff Simms" (Biggs' brother has uploaded it, and it's a "must-see" fight). Biggs makes it look easy at times against a decent and very dangerous opponent.
Danny Williams against Mark Potter deserves a mention. His arm becomes disalocated at the shoulder sometime during the fight and hangs limply, making Williams look horribly vulnerable (not to mention the pain), so Williams pull out the KO with lefts only.
Any other examples of courageous one-armed heroics ?

James "Buddy" McGirt Vs. Pernell Whitaker.
McGirt basicly fought the entire fight One-armed
having injured himself during sparring leading up to his fight with Pea.
It was going to be McGirt's biggest payday (1 MIll) so he could not pass it up.
(Not taking anything away from's Pea's win, Pernell did what he had to)

Hopkin's systematically dissecting Echols with one arm and stopping him late after going 12 with him.
Beautiful stuff.

Holmes with the torn bicep versus Norton was outstanding.

Holme's was also injured/one armed against Roy Williams, wasn't he?

I thought Holmes was throwing lefts and right hands until the end against Norton, so it doesn't come to mind as a "one-armed" performance by any means, for me anyway.
Then again, maybe I'm mis-remembering the fight.

I have no clue WTF happened to Tyrell Biggs............. Biggs had size, speed, athletic ability, etc......... And, his Coke use was NOT as bad as some people claim and whine about......... Ty Biggs usually looked in-shape and capable of going 15 rds, if not tagged on his jaw........
Tyrell Biggs folded like a lawn chain against Tyson in '87, and that loss took a lot out of him....... Biggs came back afterward, but never to the avail or level he was at in 1986....... The early 1990s KO loss to Lenny Lewis forced me to lose all interest in Biggs.....

Mayweather against Chavez deserves a mention.
Frazier was pretty much blind in one eye throughout his career.
Abraham beating Miranda with a broken jaw.

Hearns fought Benitez after round 6 or so with a popped knuckle in his right paw..... Hearns basically jabbed and hooked his way to victory of a passive Benitez who looked bored shitless in 1982.........

John Conteh decisioning Yaqui Lopez in his defense of his portion of the lightheavy title in '75 I think...his chronically injured right hand was at it again and he did a virtuouso paint job on Lopez for 15 rounds.

Jeff in the 2nd Sharkey fight perhaps.Considering how vaunted his hook was, the damage he did to Sharkey with his right alone was incredible in this one, and indicates how seriously Ernest Roeber injured his left arm with that medicine ball prank. After 25 rounds, that good right arm had Sharkey fading.

Good call.
How about LaMotta against Cerdan? People often forget, LaMotta was handicapped by a broken left hand in that fight - that fact being overshadowed by all the focus on Cerdan's injury. I guess that was basically "the battle of the one-armed bandits".

Didn't Gene Fullmer fight the last 4 rounds against Florentino Fernandez with a broken arm on his way to a decision win.
Tough effort that.

Yes...a broken elbow, and he was in such pain, he couldn't use the right arm to block, or anything..he gutted out that win, and makes a point of how damned TOUGH Fullmer was.

Didn't know that about LaMotta...man those guys were tough back then.
And yes, I was quite impressed by Conteh in that Lopez fight.

Not to mention Fernandez could hit like fucking sledgehammer as well.

Joshua Clottey & Antonio Margarito BOTH had injured thier hands & still managed to put up a great brawl.
Not to mention Fernandez could hit like fucking sledgehammer as well.
Fullmer was a tough,tough,tough man.
I remember Fullmer stating that after he broke his elbow in that fight that he didn't dare to open his mouth to answer his corner men's questions between rounds because he so sick from the pain that he was afraid that he was going to vomit. Now that really shows how tough he was. I always thought that this fight took alot out of Fullmer and he wasn't the same fighter afterward.

Good performance from Hop but I really don't think he was injured from that takedown.

Think maybe Charley Zivic deserves a mention here fought his career without being able to extend his right arm fully. So basically could only fight inside with his right.

Williams-Potter - Williams completely disjointed his shoulder, it was clearly out of his socket and was taking a beating but scored a come from the depths 1 punch KO uppercut
Chavez-Morales (Chavez lost but did well with a rotator cuff injury he had early on)
Jones-Hopkins (Jones damaged his hand early)
Mayweather-Castillo 1 (Mayweather injured his rotator)

I remember being impressed with Tyrell Biggs breaking his collarbone against Top 20 heavyweight Jeff Sims and going on to win a convincing decision(broke it in the 2nd) Biggs was only in his 9th or 10th fight and Sims was considered a tough test.
Biggs could have been better than he turned out, i think substance abuse had a lot to do with him turning out to be a mediocre Heavyweight.

I am shocked nobody has mentioned Holy's performance against Moorer in '94 when Holy had that fucked up shoulder hindering his performance..... Screw the heart attack bullshit..... That was a ploy / excuse....... Holy's shoulder was damaged during training and he tore the hell out it some more during that title with Moorer........ That is why Holy looked listless and unable to put punches together in that fight........ STILL! Holy did score a flash knockdown of Moorer in round 2, and many of us, including George Foreman, thought Holy did enough to at least retain the crown by way of a draw.......

Maybe not one armed, but what about Craig Bodzianowski?
Honeyghan sucked it up against Blocker when his right went.
Fenech fought with crippling hand problems against Villasana.
