View Full Version : Talking to Hatton last night....

Hatton came to Blackpool Winter Gardens last night for a sportsmans dinner and my company provided the security for the show and after show drinking master class, both were a massive success.
I've known Hatton for many years and as always he was extremely personable and tbh as a boxing fan I really enjoyed his talk as he recounted his favourite moments of his career.
He was also very funny adding some gr8, light hearted digs at Junior Witter and FW which was probably missed on 90% of attendees but I had to chuckle.
There was a small element of the crowd who resorted to cringe worthy nut huggery but that aside it was a very enjoyable evening and I highly recommend for all boxing fans should a sportsmans event involving Hatton come to your town.
As always when I talk to Hatton I try not to let my admiration of him get the better of me and I talk to him on the level and he, as noted in another thread (apoligys' thread starter) most certainly not fight beyond next year.
Hatton-Maliggiani or whatever his name is, is scheduled for madison square garden or vegas november 22nd there will be an announcement and press conference this week. I asked Hatton who his final fight will be against and he was 90% certain it will be against Pacman. I suggested that De La Hoya despite his age would possibly be more legacy enhancing (though its arguble- both would be fine victories) and Hatton reasoned that he thought De La Hoya was probably too big and the recent, rumoured offer was a fight made at 10st 10lbs, a weight where Hatton was likely to be completely ineffective. He said that if the fight were to be made at 10st 7lbs he would strongly consider it.
So there you go straight from the horses mouth.... I alledge;).... But truthfully once again a great night, with a great British fighter. I wish you haters had of been there-

Thanks for that.
If he ends his career with wins against Malignaggi and Pacman it will have have been a great career no doubt.
After his last performance though I'm not convinced he has it anymore or maybe that performance was to be expected with it being the one after his first professional defeat?

i agree jeff.hatton came to sunderland to do a talk last year and he was first class.he stood up for the best part of an hour ad libbed and kept people entertained the whole time,he was very funny and a good chunk of his talk was spent taking the piss out of himself.in between nothing was too much bother for him, there was a steady procession of people taking pictures of him on their phones, and it just wasn't a bother to him, sugar ray leonard was up here the year before and that sort of thing was a no no.

Good one! Sounds like a cracking night.
I wish you hadn't mentioned the DLH fight though, DLH is way to big imo and would crush him (that's not a dig a hatton, they just differ in size so).
Malifaggi doesn't excite me one bit, but the more I see Pacquiao making a comfortable transition through the weights, the more I think he can beat Hatton when previously I thought he had no chance
I'm gonna go with the class, rather than just size. Pacquiao will overcome it and whoop his ass :happy

I agree with you (for once when it comes to Hatton!)
Malignaggi isnt the best opponent, but its still a worthy opponent being the only real contender in the LWW division (presuming Bradley doesnt start walking through people - but if that happens I assume it will be too late for a Hatton fight).
I thought Hatton would be too big for Pac and saw this as being pretty straight forward and not really a legacy fight for Hatton. Seeing how comforatable Pac was at LW though really made me excited. If Pac can get through Valero and possibly another LW (Campbell? Think Casa would be all wrong for him) then all of a sudden a showdown with Hatton becomes a competitive fight.
I'm still edging Hatton for it (presuming all goes well in each of the fights beforehand), but it now seems a genuine fight rather than Hatton v a blown up name. Bring it on!

Jeff, Hatton is and has always been a really nice guy. Boxing wise his aggressive pressure style is crowd pleasing. Personally I have never felt he was as good as some made him out to be which PBF proved.
I think ODLH will be to big for Hatton whereas a fight with Pacman looks very interesting. If it is 2 more and out then good luck to the kid. Probably the best fighter to have come out of Manchester.

True but you got to admire the chap for giving something back to the less fortunate via all the charity work he does. Unlike others he does not seek publicity for it either and that is what sets him apart from the muck.
Compare his charity work to that of Mr Khan when he visited a relief camp in Kashmir after the 2005 earthquake. Some nob in his entourage made him take off a charity t-shirt and don a reebok t-shirt. How fcking sad is that when you are milking an unfortunate event such as an earthquake for your sponsors (I doubt reebok would have minded if Amir had worn the charity t-shirt and Amir did not have problems wearing it).

What does the amount of money a person has have to do with his desire to complete charity work?
The guy is pleasant to people at these events because he would not get booked and the charities (and probably himself) would lose out financially.

Too much was made of the fact that he got the shit beat out of him for 12 rounds by Cotto. He lived off that for a couple of fights, but now people are beginning to see him in a real light again: an ordinary champion in a sub-standard division.

It's great how fan friendly he Is but he does It a little too much at times which can attract people who are yesman and stuff.
Reading a British boxing.net article with Graham talking about guys who he thought were friends who never wanted to see again after the PBF fight who were described like they were hangers on.

Well I went to see the Audience with Hatton and Bruno last night and came away a bit disappointed.
Bruno was ok, mostly took questions from the floor gave brief answers but didn't seem to remember much and knew very little about the current state of boxing.
Hatton basically did an 'end of the pier' type comedy show that was quite amusing but had some very old and oft heard gags in there, he looked comfortable joked about his weight, but if he is thinking about making a career of it he needs some new material and the ability to deal with idiots who shout shit out.
He slagged off Junior Witter (calling him a knobhead) which drew cheers from the mostly skinhead pissed up idiot audience (it was virtually in Southend after all)
He seems to hold the WBU title in fairly high regard and seems to honestly believe that it is a 'World Title':nut
It was a fairly short night for 25 quid, Bruno was on for 40 mins tops, Hatton for maybe 45, I would have liked to have seen him cut the comedy aspect down and heard him answer some questions and told a few more fight anecdotes, but all in all it wasn't a bad night.

It is a world title!
Technically anyway.....
I started up my own sanctioning body, the WBL (World Boxing League). I had a fight with my best mate's sister's ex-chap (total wanker anyway) and declared myself a world champion. I was wearing a belt at the time, so took some tip-ex out of my cousins schoolbag the next day and proceeded to write WBL on the centre of the strap.
The ring was the dancefloor in the local WMC (about 20ft square) and a guy resembling Dave Parris was walking across it to the bar at the time as well.
I tell you what, I am about 175 right now, and in training for a half marathon. Therefore in a couple of weeks I will be about 168 - I can therefore chin somebody else and be one of only a score of fighters ever to win a title at one weight, and then move down and win another.
In all seriousness, hugger or hater, many people actually think that Junior Witter is a knobhead (most people I know do) regardless of his abilities in the ring.

thanks for the insite. fyi, pac's gonna beat your boy into retirement.Thanks. FYI the lady in your picture probably used to be a man also as impressive as Pac was the other night I'm still not convinced he can beat anyone who isn't shot or mediocre. The only time he's faced a live opponent he lost 11 rounds against Marquez.

He had three against Morales - the only prime version of Erik defeated him.

He had three against Morales - the only prime version of Erik defeated him. Exactly... i'm slowly warming to him as a fighter but as for all his 4ft 11ins nut huggers who pollute every youtube boxing clip they piss my off the little cunts.

Rarely in a shit fight though, if ever.......
The Pac huggers are nowhere near as bad as the Pavlik ones - you would think he had beaten Hearns, Hagler and Leonard all at once with the way they go on.....

The Pac huggers are nowhere near as bad as the Pavlik ones who in turn are nowhere near as bad as the Klitschko huggers. They are the worst by far.

Not sure about that one, I try to ignore the heavyweight division as much as I can :patsch
The Pavlik ones are really bad - all the polls about prime RJJ vs Pavlik, prime BHop vs Pavlik are *******s.
He is just waiting for a schooling, just a shame JC wants a shot Jones instead.

Have you ever tried to heckle a guy with a microphone???:D
I got a big booming voice my good man, however I dont think I would last too long if I dared heckle Ricky:D
I would have Hatton huggers of all shapes & sizes swarming all over me like a rash... but what a way to go out, the first true martyr of ESB who died for his beliefs...

Did I just a compliment from Dunky??:scaredas:
I suppose it wasn't a massive disappointment, I did have a good night, I just would have preferred to hear more about the behind the scenes boxing stuff and less about his midget dad I supposeYou are a boxing fan, the majority of those present probably still thought bruno was active. This might explain their performance. Double feints and such talk would fly over the audience's heads. They paid good money to hear ricky call himself a fat bastard.
