Read a lot about Gerald Mclellan. I want to get to the bottom of his condition post-fight with Nigel Benn. Basically there are the following theories with pluses (+) and minuses (-):
1. Prior injuries, G-Man's chin and accumulation
+ Sparring with a heavyweight - Don King paid off the Dr to allow him to fight after suffering injuries in training
+ Sparring walked through some of Tommy Hearns best bombs
+ First fight with Julian Jackson, arguably the biggest punching middleweight of all time, where G-Man traded.
2. Weight loss
+ Big guy fighting at a weight considerably lighter than his walk-around weight. Losing so much water can dehydrate a person to a point where they are more suscpetible to damage.
+ He punched himself out in round 1 trying to KTOF Benn to add to his weight loss.
- This was his first fight at 168, previously he was at 160.
3. Nigel Benn's power and G-Man's chin
+ Nigel Benn was a renowned puncher. Streetfighting stories of him punching a guys nose across his face or a piece of a guys head attached by a thread. KOed a few granite chinned guys, e.g. Iran Barkley KO 1.
+ During the fight G-Man took many fully extended power punches from Benn.
- Benn couldn't KO Eubank in two fights, although Eubank's was also granite.
- G-Man traded with bigger punches previously.
4. Rabbit punches
+ During many clinches, G-Man was taking rabbit punches to the back of his head from Benn. Some stories state that G-Man wasn't right from round 2 and this may be the reason he wasn't complaining about the rabbit punches, that is because his mind was already elsewhere.
+ The back of the head is an unprotected and susceptible area of the body.
5. Headbutt
+ A headbutt in the mid to late rounds brought an immediate reaction from G-Man. His blinking appeared to increae from that point onwards.
+ It is argued that this started a blood clot.
- It was only Benn's dreadlocks that caught G-Man's eye.
I am only interested in factual evidence that can support the argument. Is there some medical evidence? Are there stories pre or post-fight from G-Man or someone who knew him?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
